AsiaBio’s ProBiotic a rice-ing star
BY LIDIANA ROSLISEBERANG - 24 AUGUST 2014 @ 11:34 PM
RESEARCH and development (R&D) incubator, Asia Bioenergy Technologies Bhd (AsiaBio), has developed a new microbial supplement for the rapid growth of plants, in a bid to curb the country’s over-reliance on food imports.
The supplement, called the “Plant ProBiotic Tumbuhan 2 in 1” (ProBiotic), which took two years to develop, has been proven to promote the growth of plant.
Treated plants show significant improvement nutrient absorption rate and have better root development. The supplement also improves soil conditions and helps get rid of antagonistic bacteria while improving yields and crop quality.
For the last two years, AsiaBio has been using ProBiotic on padi fields belonging to Pertubuhan Peladang Kawasan (PPK) Kampung Pelet and PPK Lahar Bubur, both in Penang, and the results have been significant.
“We used ProBiotic in Lahar Bubur in the first half of last year and not only did we manage to increase the yields by 108 per cent, the padi matured a month faster, meaning quicker harvest time and bigger profit,” said AsiaBio executive director Looi Kem Loong.
Experiments in different parts of the country have shown similar results, with Kampung Rama in Perlis registering an 88 per cent increase in yields — from 4,440kg of harvested crop to 8,300kg the following season.
“We see this technology as the way of the future and we intend to introduce this product to more farmers and food producers. It will help Malaysia’s food production in the long run,” said Steve Tan, who is also an AsiaBio executive director.
The firm has a lone production line at its Penang factory and is able to produce up to 1.5 tonnes of ProBiotic a month. It is looking to add four more production lines within 36 months.
“We have RM42 million worth of funds, so funding the production line is not an issue. The issue is in finding the markets for the supplement,” said Looi, adding that the firm intends to market its products domestically.
“Right now, we are looking at ways of getting promotional backing from the Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry and the National Farmers Organisation, but this may take a while.”
However, both Looi and Steve
are quite confident in getting the government’s backing in marketing ProBiotic to farmers nationwide, considering its proven benefits and the leadership of AsiaBio chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
“We know that we have a working product that’s capable of yielding significant results. We also have the funding to increase our production capacity.
“We are waiting to get the market we need to push ProBiotic forward and that’s where we need the government’s backing the most,” said Tan.
AsiaBio was listed in 2009 as one of the five incubator companies, alongside OSK Ventures International Bhd and MCM Technologies Bhd, which is part of the AmCorp group of companies.
Revenue from ProBiotic is expected to become significant in the long term. It is currently being distributed by AsiaBio’s partner company, Artisan.

Karex Bhd
(Dec 13, RM3.82)
Maintain add at RM3.77 with a target price of RM4.54: We visited Karex’s
production facilities in Port Klang recently. We felt the optimism of the
management and are convinced that utilisation for its new lines will hit at
least 75% due to the high number of pending orders and low world condom
consumption per capita.
We maintain our earnings per share (EPS) and continue to value Karex at 17
times calendar year 2015 price-earnings ratio (PER) (a 20% premium over
the rubber glove sector’s 13.8 times average forward PER).
Karex is the world’s largest condom manufacturer and we believe further
market share gains will catalyse its share price.
We visited Karex’s manufacturing plant with eight other fund managers and
analysts. We were hosted by chief executive officer Goh Miah Kiat who
explained the entire manufacturing process, including product quality testing.
The plant visit was followed by a presentation and question and answer
session. Most of the questions centred on demand for condoms and room
for margin expansion.
There were no surprises during our visit but we felt the optimism of
management. We are convinced that demand will continue to grow, given low
world consumption of only 3.3 condoms per capita per year. Karex should be
able to fill up its new capacity with the large pending orders.
We were also delighted to learn that it has very strict quality testing
procedures at each stage of the production process. This is to ensure that
the company retains its licences and orders keep streaming in. Its highly
automated processes and in-house machine designing should ensure high
operating efficiency, keeping Karex competitive.
Poorer consumer spending in Malaysia should not affect demand for
condoms since they are considered a necessity.

SapuraKencana Petroleum - T.G.I.Fab!
Author: value_investor | Publish date: Sat, 30 Nov 11:42 | >> Read article in Blog website
Target RM6.65 (Long Term: Out Perform)
SapuraKencana was the sole Malaysian company to bag the prestigious Forbes Asia's Fabulous 50 Award earlier this week. Separately, the company and its major shareholder, Seadrill, have set up a 50:50 JV in Austria to run vessel operations.
We continue to value the stock at 22.3x CY15 P/E, at a 40% premium over our 15.9x CY15 P/E market target. This is within the historical P/E range for O&G big caps. We maintain our Outperform call, with the Newfield purchase as a major catalyst. SapuraKencana is our top pick among oil & gas big caps.
What Happened
On 25 Nov, SapuraKencana won the Forbes Asia's Fabulous 50 Award at a ceremony held in China. The award, which honours Asia's best big public companies, was presented to the company's President and Group CEO, Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin, by Forbes Digital Chairman, Tim Forbes. SapuraKencana was the only Malaysian company among the 50 winners this year from a pool of 1,200 candidates. Companies were analysed for their revenues, profits, returns on capital, share prices and outlook. Meanwhile, the company announced that its unit, TL Offshore, and Seadrill's Brazilian unit, Seabras, have formed a 50:50 JV, known as Seabras Sapura Holding, in Austria.
What We Think
The Forbes win should further raise SapuraKencana's investment profile following three corporate milestones in 18 months: SapuraCrest-Kencana merger in May 2012; Seadrill acquisition in Apr 2013 and Newfield acquisition that was announced on 22 Oct 2013. The announcement of its Austrian JV was brief, but we believe that the JV was established to facilitate the operation of pipelay support vessels (PLSV) in Brazil. To recap, SapuraKencana has secured two orders worth US$4.1bn from Petrobras to charter and operate six PLSVs.
What You Should Do
Accumulate the stock. SapuraKencana is the most dynamic company in our oil & gas portfolio given its transformative developments that have led to solid earnings visibility and a robust 3-year EPS CAGR of 43%.
