Genap setahun sejak kes COVID-19 mula dilaporkan pada 19 Disember 2019 di Wuhan, China, penyelidik dari UK menemui varian baru virus ini yang mula muncul pada pertengahan September di London atau Kent iaitu selatan England.
Analisis awal mendapati varian ini 70 peratus lebih mudah merebak daripada varian lama yang dapat meningkatkan kadar kebolehjangkitan (R-naught) sebanyak 0.4.
Ini disebabkan mutasi atau perubahan pada protein pepaku (spike protein) yang terlibat dalam pelekatan virus pada sel manusia sebelum memasukinya.
Setakat ini, belum ada bukti yang menunjukkan vaksin yang dihasilkan kini tidak berkesan terhadap varian baru virus COVID-19. Malah, tiada bukti yang menunjukkan varian yang dikenali sebagai “VUI – 202012/01” ini akan menyebabkan komplikasi yang lebih teruk.
Mutasi pada virus adalah sesuatu yang dijangka dengan kadar mutasi bagi virus COVID-19 adalah sekitar 1 hingga 2 mutasi sebulan secara global. Tetapi apa yang lebih penting, mutasi ini dikesan awal supaya risikonya dapat difahami dengan cepat.
Sehingga 9 Disember 2020, 62 peratus kes COVID-19 di London disebabkan oleh varian baharu ini berbanding 28 peratus pada tiga minggu lepas. Ini menyumbang kepada peningkatan dua kali ganda kadar kebolehjangkitan berbanding minggu lepas.
Penyelidik juga percaya varian baharu ini telah merebak ke negara lain tetapi masih perlukan kajian bagi mengesahkannya.
Sebelum ini, varian D614G pernah mencetuskan gelombang kedua dan gelombang ketiga di negara ini. Varian ini mempunyai persamaan dengan varian yang dikesan di India, Filipina dan Indonesia.
