Singapore Airlines (SIA) has reported higher profits for the three months and fiscal first half ending 30-Sep-2013. But the carrier’s operating margin was once again low, particularly by SIA standards, as it continues to see a drop in yields.
Profits from associated companies and a gain in the sale of aircraft drove most of the net profit improvement.
But SIA mainline again saw a slip in passenger yields from SGD11.4 cents (USD9.1 cents) to SGD11 cents (USD8.8 cents). Unlike in 1QFY2014, the group was able to offset the drop in yields with an improvement in load factor. SIA’s mainline load factor for 2QFY2014 improved 1.3ppts to 81.1%. ASKs were up 3.2% while RPKs were up 4.9%.
SIA’s passenger yields have now dropped on a year-over-year basis for seven consecutive quarters, a discouraging sign for a carrier.
There you go folks!

Why do clever investors make big money mistakes?
by Koon Yew Yin
Statistics show that more than 75% of equity investors including professionals cannot beat the stock index. Studies have also shown that more than 75% of day traders lose money mainly due to transaction costs.
Buy on solid evidence of growth and profit – not on the basis of speculation or hot tips! Often many investors make the mistake of selling the good ones to lock in profit early but retain those that are not performing because of their aversion to taking losses on these.
Some regret their action later and may even jump back into the market to buy the same stock that they had just sold but at a higher price.
Some investors may object to the implication that loss aversion is a bad thing. After all, it is a very natural behaviour.
They might justifiably point out that the tendency to weigh losses more heavily than gains is a net positive attitude. Investors who care too much about possible gains and too little about potential losses run a great risk that can threaten their portfolios.
Very often even clever investors who are well versed in stock selection cannot overcome this psychological fear. What is tricky about this concept of loss aversion is that it can often lead us in the opposite direction – to hold on to a losing investment for longer than we should.
We must not forget that no share can keep climbing up and up indefinitely for whatever reasons. In other words, we must not be too greedy and wait for the bubble to burst. Hence the time to sell is when the reasons you bought the share – growth and profit – are no longer there or valid.

Asian equity markets followed their Wall Street peers lower on Wednesday as heightened talk about a scaling back of the Federal Reserve's monetary stimulus weighed on sentiment.
Investors were also disappointed with the lack of concrete details on policy reforms announced at China's Third Plenum meeting. U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew stressed that the world cannot rely on the U.S. to support the global economy.

Budget airlines hit turbulence in Asia
Yet as impressive as the growth of companies like AirAsia has been, the low-cost sector is starting to feel the strain of overcapacity as overambitious orders for aircraft collide with clogged airports and intensifying competition among no-frills players, analysts warn.

Meanwhile in coming months, Thailand will see three new LCCs enter the market, one each from Lion Air & Vietjet.
And in Hong Kong, Australia’s Qantas Airways, with China Eastern Airlines, are waiting to see whether the Hong Kong government will grant a licence for Jetstar Hong Kong, which would be the territory’s only low-cost airline.
So how, folks?
2013-11-12 15:18 | Report Abuse
Industry analysts estimate there are 45 LCCs operating in Asia, some of them – like Vietjet, a Vietnamese carrier – very recent entrants.
Established airlines have also entered the fray and account for about a third of the overall LCC number.
Last year Singapore Airlines launched Scoot, a low-cost carrier that competes with AirAsia X, a long-haul, low-cost affiliate of AirAsia. Evene AirAsia is being tested in its home market as Malaysia Airlines has added capacity.
While the smaller carriers may be more vulnerable than more established operators, even the latter face challenges. Shares in AirAsia have fallen by almost 9% in US dollar terms this year amid investor concern over increasing competition from Lion Air. Tiger Airways has suffered more; its shares are off by 25%.
Established carriers Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific have done relatively better. Singapore Airlines’ shares are off 6.3% in the period, while those of Cathay have risen by more than 7%. What next to happen, folks?
2013-11-12 15:10 | Report Abuse
There’s huge potential for LCC growth but there’s too much capacity and some of the growth in some cases has been too fast,” says Brendan Sobie, an analyst at the Centre for Aviation in Singapore.
“A lot of aircraft are coming in at the same time and airlines are launching as well. The outlook is pretty good but competition is intense right now.” He says that South East Asia is the only region in the world where there are more aircraft on order than planes in service.
Such pressures mirror the pain felt in Europe by Ryanair and easyJet, Europe’s two largest LCCs, which face a growing challenge from a group of budget airlines including Norwegian Air Shuttle and Budapest-based Wizz Air. So how?

Folks, for the 3Q13 AA may have to contend with costlier jet fuel as the US dollar strengthens against the ringgit. More flight frequency meaning budget airline may have to pay more for fuel in ringgit terms.
A percent (%) appreciation of USD vis a vis ringgit will reduce AA earnings by approximately 8% to 13.7% for FY2013. The impact of a weakening Australian dollar versus the ringgit in the 3Q is also a bad news to AA. The passenger yields in ringgit terms will be affected and this will adversely impact as the Australia market is one of the profitable segment for AA group.
