With Ratan Tata being the chief adviser to the AirAsia India board, what kind of participation can be expected from the Tatas in the new venture with SIA? "

On September 19, 2013, Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines announce that they have signed an agreement to start a new airline, and have applied to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board for approval to establish the new airline. Tata Sons will own 51 percent and Singapore Airlines will own the remainder in the joint venture.

Folks, this announcement could play out negatively on AirAsia's regulatory approval as Tata have 30% stake in the JV with chairman from Tata Sons.

Indian Aviation minister Ajit Singh said it was for the corporate affairs ministry and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to decide if one group could hold stakes in two airlines. What do you think, folks? Possible or not? Heheheheheh!!

Tatas vs Tatas in Indian skies?

Will the Tata Group holding a stake in another domestic carrier, directly competing with it, not be an issue with AirAsia India?

"The two airlines will not be competing against each other. They will be complimentary to each other. They will operate in different segments - LCC and FSC," Tata spokesperson said.

But folks, with there being hardly any difference in fares of LCCs and FSCs in India, industry experts said there could be problems when both airlines operate on the same routes. How? Hehehehehehehe!!

Tatas vs Tatas in Indian skies?

The announcement by Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines on launching an airline in India has come as a surprise to many as only seven months back the Tata Group had signed an agreement with Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia to launch an Indian lowcost carrier (LCC).

Singapore Airlines (SIA) had first approached Tatas in mid2012 with the proposal to start a full-service carrier.

"AirAsia has known from the very beginning that we have been in talks with SIA," a spokesperson for the Tata Group said.

Folks, As Airports Authority of India (AAI) is controlled centrally from its headquarters in New Delhi, local officers in Chennai here including the airport director have no decision-making powers.

Sources said that AirAsia was not welcomed as it expected to be in Chennai. "They hit a bureaucratic wall the moment they started to interact with officials here. Though AirAsia officials sent several feelers to AAI for incentives, the public sector airport owner refused to comply," said an airline source.

AAI reportedly told the airlines they would not get anything free at Chennai. AirAsia will be the first airline to have a hub at Chennai airport. SpiceJet initially had plans to keep its operations based out of Chennai before moving to Hyderabad. So how now?

Indian Airport sources said that AirAsia wanted to bring in the low-cost model they had successfully experimented at Malaysia and requested the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to allow them to take over the old domestic terminal, which was lying empty after operations were shifted to new building.

AirAsia wanted to convert the old terminal into an exclusive low-cost terminal and operate flights from there. But, Airports Authority (AAI) was not open to the idea. The airline's representatives also had to shuttle between Chennai and Delhi to complete other formalities.

Folks, AirAsia India may miss its 2013 deadline to start services as the joint venture with Tata Sons and Telestra TradePlace is entangled in approvals and clearances with the ministry and regulatory agencies.

AA was aiming for a year-end commencement of services from Chennai connecting tier-II and tier-III cities in the southern region.

The airline had readied human resource and infrastructure to start operations before November. The airline had recruited its top management staff, flight attendants and had also set up a small office at the Chennai airport.

But, it is expected to take longer as the airline does not want to hurry its launch.

AirAsia will own 49 per cent, the Tata group 30 per cent and Telstra the balance of 21 per cent.

Folks, Brent crude rose towards $111 a barrel on Thursday, extending gains for a second day after the United States kept its monetary stimulus program intact, boosting global equity and commodity prices.

Brent and U.S. oil gained the most in three weeks in the previous session as the U.S. Federal Reserve's decision to delay the wind down of its massive monetary stimulus took investors by surprise, weakening the dollar and stoking demand for risky assets. Dollar-denominated commodities become more attractive to holders of other currencies when the greenback weakens.

1. Folks, capital flows may be more muted now. Investors will still be wary the Fed may yet start withdrawing liquidity by the end of the year.

2. Moreover, GDP growth is slowing almost everywhere in Asia, with the exception of the Philippines. At the same time, the absence of inflationary pressures outside India and Indonesia means policymakers won’t jack up interest rates or exchange rates to tame excessive credit.

3. Adjusted for inflation, Singapore’s real effective exchange rate is already 20 percent stronger than at the end of 2007. The city-state’s exports have fallen for seven straight months.

4. Besides, China’s debt-laden economy is slowing, and Bank of Japan is printing yen aggressively.

1. Folks, the U.S. Federal Reserve has granted Asia a temporary reprieve. But the longer the relief lasts, the greater the risk that complacency will undermine the region’s financial stability.

2. The Fed’s decision to delay unwinding its $85b a month money printing programme eases the pressure on the two Asian countries with the biggest dollar addiction – India and Indonesia – to cure their habit by squeezing domestic demand.

3. Investors reacted accordingly: the Indonesian Rupiah jumped 1.9 percent against the dollar on the morning of Sept. 19, while Jakarta stocks rose 5 percent.

If the economy after the tapers does not recover from here, does that signal that the entire process was for naught?

Stock-market investors have been huge beneficiaries of quantitative easing but now may face a decidedly different environment if Dr. Bernanke and his successor decide the party is over and start to turn out the lights.

The Fed is in completely uncharted territory here, and nobody, not even the Fed, knows how this will turn out or what the ramifications will be for global financial markets.

Last time the question was, are you reday for the taper? But now the question, are you ready for what going to happen after the tapers?

What next to haunt EMs, U.S. ceiling debt? Careful now, folks!

Stock

Folks, regardless of the immediate consequences, one must consider what happens once the taper era begins. What will happen to bond yields? What will happens to borrowing rates? What will happens to financial & equity markets? What will happen to the housing market? Of course, it will impact a number of other industries from land, sea to aviations.

Any "tightening" of the money supply is always bad for business. Most indsutries will very likely feel the pinch.

Emerging market economies have been feeling the pain since the taper talk began. What will happen to those economies once the taper actually begins? Jeffrey Gundlach recently pointed out that the situation in India could cause another financial crisis.

Would a $10 billion monthly slowdown of the Fed's liquidity pump be enough to nudge India's economy off the precipice from where it presently hangs? If so, what might be the consequences? Would the Fed be able to stanch the bleeding by returning to $85 billion per month?

Would Malaysia & Indonesia be spared from the selldown?

Are you ready after Fed tapes?

After five years of easy money, the party might finally be over.

If most economists are right, at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, we will receive word from the Fed that it is reducing the amount of its monthly bond purchases by $10 billion dollars, from $85 billion/month to $75 billion. At 2:30 p.m., Ben Bernanke will hold a press conference to explain the details and resolve any ambiguities. What happens after that is anyone's guess.

Although a stock-market selloff is not expected after all, there has been plenty of warning that the taper was on the way but one can never be sure.

Who would have thought that the EMs turmoil, simply as a result of discussing the taper? Does this mean that once the taper actually begins, we can expect a more significant selloff through Sep. 19, or does it mean that the taper is already priced in?

3. The four respondents are AirAsia, Indian finance ministry, aviation ministry and commerce ministry.

4. In the AirAsia case, Swamy says the government’s clearance to AirAsia India is in violation of a September policy that allowed foreign airlines to invest in Indian airlines.

Businesses in Thailand were mostly positive, strengthening from multi-year lows hit last quarter, with three positive about business outlook and four remaining neutral.

Both Malaysia and Singapore fell from the previous quarter with the majority of businesses in both countries citing uncertainty in the global economy as the biggest risk.

AA fail to close above the MYR2.60 resistance level this week. Will AA test the critical support level at Rm2.45? Remember folks the next support level stand at Rm2.33.
