Indonesian airlines are demanding the government immediately raise the price ceiling for scheduled flight services to help them cope with increasing fuel prices, the depreciation of the national currency against the US dollar and inflation.
The price of every cost component has increased. The price of avtur [aviation turbine fuel], for instance, has exceeded Rp 10,000 (95 US cents} per liter in the past six months and in some areas it has reached Rp 11,000.
Avtur prices have continued to fluctuate between Rp 9,500 and Rp 10,000 since last year.
Brent crude oil was trading at US$111.17 a barrel in London on Monday, a 0.05 percent increase from Sunday.
This is the highest level since April due to combined factors including the unrest in Egypt and seasonal North Sea maintenance according to the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

Earlier news on Zest Air. Philippine budget carrier grounded on 'safety' issues - Fri, Aug 16, 2013
Budget Philippine carrier Zest Air was banned from flying over safety infractions, effective immediately, the country's aviation regulator said on Friday.
The small airline is suspended over incidents that compromised several flights as well as other violations of air safety rules, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines deputy director-general John Andrews said in a letter to operator Zest Airways Inc.
"(Your) Air Operator Certificate is suspended and (you are) hereby precluded to engage in air carrier operations ... until this Authority is assured that the necessary corrective actions and compliance with aviation safety standards have been undertaken," Andrews said.
Five Zest Air domestic flights were grounded between July 22 and August 13 due to problems ranging from hydraulic systems issues, fuel overflow, and a missing fuel coupling cap, Andrews said.
A Zest Air plane was also found refuelling on Wednesday while its passengers were on board, he added.
Zest Air pilots, meanwhile, were found to have exceeded the flying time limit of 100 hours per month "due to (a) rise in flight operations and flight crew shortage". Twenty-four of its pilots exceeded the monthly limit last year, Andrews said.
Meanwhile, the regulator said Zest Air had failed to appoint an "accountable manager" after the resignation of its previous executive on July 19.
Andrews said the manager is responsible for "ensuring that all flight operations and maintenance activities can be financed and carried out to the highest degree of safety standards.
Malaysia-based Air Asia, Southeast Asia's biggest budget carrier, bought a 49 percent stake in Zest Airways in March.

Investors have short memories. Before the suspension this happened, folks! Old news dated 3 Aug 2013
MANILA, Philippines - The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has put Zest Airways Inc. under “heightened surveillance due to several flight cancellations over the past few weeks.
John Andrews, CAAP deputy director general said in a text message that aviation officials are closely watching the operations of Zest Air due to flight cancellations due to mechanical problems over the past few weeks.
“Yes they are on heightened surveillance over cancelled flights,” Andrews said.
Yesterday alone, about six flights of Zest Air were cancelled due to “aircraft situation.” In July, Zest Air cancelled a total of 33 flights.
According to the CAAP official, the regulator would monitor the maintenance program of Zest Air. “We will have to check them before they are sanctioned,” Andrews added.
Zest Air has a fleet of 10 Airbus A320 and one A319 serving nine domestic destinations and five international routes via the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) as well as hubs in Kalibo and Cebu.
The airline flies to Shanghai, Jinjiang, Incheon, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuala Lumpur as well as Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Kalibo, Puerto Princesa, Tacloban, and Tagbilaran.
Last May, low cost carrier giant AirAsia Berhad of Malaysia through local arm Philippines’ AirAsia Inc. completed a deal entered into two months ago with Zest Air.
AirAsia that controls 40 percent of Philippines’ AirAsia has acquired an 85 percent economic interest and 49 percent voting rights in ZestAir as well as a 100 percent interest in Yao’s Asiawide Airways Inc.
There you go, folks! Careful now as with more negative than positive news next week will be a bad week for AA!

SAFETY VIOLATIONS: Hundreds stranded at Ninoy Aquino airport after suspension of airline
MANILA:THE suspension of Zest Air, the Philippines' unit of Malaysian brand carrier Air- Asia, left many passengers stranded at Ninoy Aquino International Airport here yesterday.
Hundreds were seen lining up at its ticketing office outside Terminal 4 where the airline runs its nine domestic routes as well as two international destinations to Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.
Zest Air also flies to Incheon in Korea and Shanghai and Jinjiang in China via Terminal 3. It has a fleet of 10 Airbus A320 and one A319.
Passenger Gabriel Manuel, who had booked a morning flight to Cebu in central Philippines, said he came early to the airport but was informed by security officials to go to the ticketing office.
"I am still waiting for answers. But from what I have heard and read in the newspapers, the airline has been suspended because of safety violations," said the 38-year-old businessman.
Another stranded passenger Tim Lorenzo said airline staff had told them they would be booked into other flights, but had yet to get any confirmation or information from the carrier.
"I was asked to show my ticket and told to wait for their call. "That's it," said the machine operator, who was also on his way to Cebu.
Zest Air ground employees were also unable to tell passengers when the next available flights had been scheduled but pointed out that stranded passengers would be given food vouchers and accommodation if necessary.
Other domestic destinations that the airline operated are Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Iloilo, Kalibo, Puerta Princesa, Tacloban and Tagbilaran.
The airline was grounded since Friday from 6.15pm after it received orders from the Philippines' Civil Aviation Authority for various aviation safety violations.
Following the suspension, aircraft bound here were allowed to return but subsequently grounded. It was estimated some 7,200 passengers, who were booked in 80 flights, would be affected by the suspension, including 1,429 in 14 flights on Friday night.
Meanwhile, in an immediate response, Zest Air director Joy Caneba said the airline's priority was in providing those affected by the suspension with accommodation.
"Zest Air is also offering passengers the option of getting a full refund or being re-booked onto other airlines." Additional reporting by Carisma Kapoor

Zest Air, formally Asian Spirit, is a LCC based in Manila. With hubs at Diosdado Macapagal International Airport, Kalibo International Airport and Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Zest Air uses a fleet of narrow-body Airbus and MA regional aircraft to serve a network of domestic and regional destinations within the Philippines and Asia.
On 10-May-2013, AirAsia Group announced plans to integrate AirAsia Philippines into Zest in order to maximise fleet utilisation between both carriers and slot allocations from Manila.
The two airlines will remain separate with Zest falling under the AirAsia brand and AirAsia website.

“With this partnership in place, other than our current base in Clark, Philippines’ AirAsia would be able to operate from the main airport in Manila as well. This helps us to attract feeder traffic into Clark and leverage on Zest Air’s attractive slots from Manila,” AirAsia Philippines CEO Hontiveros said in statement.
Hontiveros said tickets for ZestAir flights are now available on AirAsia website and will be part of the AirAsia Group’s network.
Folks, last time due to safety and management concerns the US Federal Aviation Authority downgrade the rating of the Philippines carriers to Category 2 from Category 1 in 2007, limiting U.S. bound flights.
In 2010, the European Union also blacklisted Philippine carriers. Maybe these are previous owners fault!
Now the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines has suspended Zest Airways Inc? Whose fault is it now?
