6/3/13 - BoA Merrill Lynch pegs AA low at RM1.85, which released this analyst report after a meeting with AA’s management at ASEAN Stars Conference 2013 in Singapore today, said:
1. Given the imminent start of new rival Malindo in its home market in Malaysia, AA’s stock price could face an intensification of headwinds.
2. Although AA is ramping up its capacity aggressively, it is “doubtful” that these additional seats can be filled at the same unit revenues.
3. In addition to AA's growth plans, we expect the pricing environment to see added downward pressure with the Malaysian-based LCC fleet swelling by 30% in 2013.
4. AA’s management “looks increasingly thinly spread”.
5. This is a trough valuation multiple reflecting our expectation of a sharp decline in earnings through 2014 as main rival Lion Air aggressively expands in Malaysia.

1. Revenue for the 1Q stood at 1.30 billion ringgit, up 11.3 percent from the same period last year, due mainly to a 7 percent increase in passengers but sadly the 1Q profit was Rm104.79 mil compared with Rm172.44 mil in the same quarter last year.
2. 1Q net profit fell 39 percent year-on-year due to a foreign exchange loss on borrowings.
3. Operating expenses & finance costs 4QE12 = Rm1.023 bil

Operating Statistics 2nd Quarter 2013:-
1. In 2Q13, the Group* recorded a strong load factor of 80%, an increase of 1% from the same period last year.(maybe after cancellation of poor load flights)
2. The total number of passengers carried for the whole Group increased by 20% year-on-year to approximately 9.99 million in line with the increase in capacity which stood at 18%.
Operating Statistic 1st Quarter 2013:-
1. In 1Q13, the Group* recorded a strong load factor of 79% (maybe after cancellation of poor load flights)
2. The total number of passengers increased by 19% to approximately 9.8 million which is in line with 21% increase in capacity.

For 1Q AA said jet fuel costs rose 18 percent in the quarter to 523 million ringgit, while aircraft lease expense climbed 11 percent to 44.7 million ringgit.
AA also had a foreign exchange loss of 37.7 million ringgit on its borrowings.
Will this 2QE be any different? Remember folks, I'm neither with or against AA.

AA borrowings are mainly in the form of term loans which are for the purchase of new Airbus aircraft. The maturity period of non-current borrowing is 14 years and below.
Important fact folks, borrowings are denominated in US Dollar (predominantly), RM and Euro.

1. Malindo now benefits from a relatively low cost structure as it is able to pursue joint purchasing with Lion, including for aircraft, engines and parts.
2. It also is able to leverage the maintenance operation of its Malaysian owner, NADI, which owns a 51% stake in Malindo and has an MRO business with several hangars at Subang.
3. There will be challenges. Malindo will face intense competition across all its initial international routes from both LCCs and full-service carriers. It will also need to build up its brand overseas.
4. Malindo has a very ambitious business plan, as it strives to have a comprehensive network along with a fleet that is expected to eventually reach 100 aircraft.
5. The upcoming initial phase of Malindo’s international expansion will be a critical test as the carrier tries to prove that it can become a major player in the Malaysian and broader Asian markets.

1. Malindo is a hybrid carrier, offering a business class and an economy class featuring complimentary meals and beverages along with IFE monitors at every seat.
2. Lion’s product is more basic but does include a 20kg complimentary checked bag allowance. This allows for a smoother transfer of passengers between Malindo and Lion as customers will not need to pay extra for bags to cover certain flights in a joint itinerary.

1. Malindo will work closely with Lion in the Malaysia-Indonesia market and on services from Indonesia to markets beyond Kuala Lumpur.
2. The two carriers will interline and cross-sell using their respective websites.
3. Malindo and Lion already use the same reservations platform as does Wings and Batik – both of which Malindo also plans to work with in offering domestic connections in Indonesia.
4. Malindo also plans to offer a connection product at Kuala Lumpur for passengers originating in Indonesia.
5. Malindo particularly expects a significant amount of traffic between Indonesia and India.
6. Indonesia is the largest market from India not currently served with non-stop flights.
7. The market is also growing rapidly, boosted by demand from Indonesia’s Indian population as well as inbound demand from India.

2. In the Malaysian domestic market, Malindo currently provides 42,000 weekly seats, giving the new hybrid carrier about a 7% share of total capacity in Malaysia’s domestic market compared to 47% for AA and 45% for the MAS Group (includes Firefly).
3. The anticipated 22,680 weekly international seats will give Malindo about a 2% share of seat capacity in Malaysia’s international market compared to 39% for the AA brand (includes AirAsia X) and 27% for the MAS Group.
4. The Malindo system-wide share could reach 4% by the end of 2013 as the carrier takes another four aircraft.
5. Malindo’s international expansion will give the Lion Group an important international presence in several key international markets as Kuala Lumpur quickly becomes the group’s main international transit point.
6. While Lion is also expected to eventually pursue its own international expansion, using Malindo as an international growth platform is logical given that Malaysia has a more established international market than Indonesia and the fact that Kuala Lumpur significantly less congested than Jakarta.

1. Malindo is poised to overtake Lion by the end of 2013 as the largest international carrier in the group based on number of routes. Malindo will likely overtake Lion in 2014 as the largest international carrier in the group based on seat capacity.
2. Malindo’s international operation will provide important diversification for the Lion Group which is predominantly a domestic carrier.
3. The nine international routes planned for 2H2013 will give Malindo 22,680 weekly international seats.
4. Lion currently provides 48,000 weekly international seats. Almost 40% of these seats are on the Jakarta-Singapore route, which Lion serves with six daily frequencies.
5. Lion also serves Jeddah in Saudi Arabia using its fleet of two 747-400s.
6. In addition to Jakarta and Medan to Kuala Lumpur and Medan to Penang, Lion's other two international routes include Surabaya to Singapore and Singapore to Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, both of which are served with one daily flight.

1. Malindo/Lion to narrow the huge gap with AA in Malaysia-Indonesia market.
2. The Malaysia-Indonesia market is more liberal and has a much different dynamic given that the AA Group already controls a leading 62% share of seat capacity between the two countries (AA Indonesia 31% & AA Msia 31%).
3. With Malindo’s upcoming launch of services to Indonesia, the Lion Group will be able to narrow the huge gap with AA.
4. The Lion Group currently only accounts for 9% of capacity between Malaysia and Indonesia, including 8% for the Lion brand and 1% for its regional subsidiary Wings.
5. The MAS Group accounts for 19% (includes flights operated by MAS regional subsidiary Firefly) while Garuda accounts for only 3%.
6. Two other Indonesian carriers, Tigerair Mandala and Sriwijaya Air, along with KLM, Kuwait Airways and Yemenia, account for the remaining 7%.
7. Malindo plans to join sister carrier Lion in operating the Kuala Lumpur-Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur-Medan routes.
8. Malindo also plans to launch services from Kuala Lumpur to the Indonesian island of Bali and Batam, routes which are not currently served by Lion.
9. All four Indonesian routes are expected to be launched by the end of Sep-2013 and will initially be served with one daily flight.
10. Malindo is planning a second wave of Malaysia-Indonesia routes in 2014, including Kuala Lumpur to Makassar and Yogyakarta.

1. Malindo in the meantime will have a competitive advantage as other Malaysian carriers will be unable to respond to its launch of Malaysia-India services by further increasing capacity in the market.
2. Rival AA is particularly at a disadvantage as it will be unable to increase flights to India and fully exploit network synergies with AA India, which plans to launch services in 4Q2013.
3. AA India will be limited to operating domestically under Indian regulations, which prohibits new carriers from launching international services until they have operated domestically for five years.
4. Unless AA India succeeds in lobbying the Indian government to overturn this regulation - an unlikely event given that India’s other LCCs will argue they had to wait five years before launching international services - the AA Group can only access the Malaysia-India market from the Malaysian side.
5. But with the current bilateral, AA is limited from expanding beyond its current five Malaysia-India routes and even if the bilateral is expanded they will need to fight with MAS and Malindo for any additional traffic rights.

1. Folks, Malindo has the advantage until the Malaysia-India bilateral can be re-negotiated.
2. Malindo’s 5,040 seats essentially replaces the 4,100 one-way weekly seats previously provided by AA X.
3. With the new Malindo flights as well as the upcoming capacity increases from MAS and AA, Malaysian carriers will be fully utilising traffic rights available between the two countries.
4. Malaysian authorities would like to expand the India bilateral as all three allocated Malaysian carriers (AA, MAS and now Malindo) would be interested in pursuing further expansion to India.
5. But Indian authorities remain reluctant as Indian carriers are currently only using less than 10% of their available traffic rights.
6. Even if a new deal is negotiated, India will likely only be willing to agree to a small incremental increase as it did with Singapore in early 2013, when only 10% increase in capacity was agreed.

1. Malindo plans to initially link Kuala Lumpur with Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi and Tiruchirappalli.
2. Malindo will initially serve each route with one daily flight. Delhi is expected to be the first of Malindo’s Indian routes.
3. Malindo will compete with AA in the Kochi and Tiruchirappalli markets, both of which are secondary cities in southern India.
4. AA currently offers one daily A320 flight to Kochi and two daily A320 flights to Tiruchirappalli, with a third Tiruchirappalli frequency to be introduced at the end of Aug-2013.
5. Southern India and particularly Tiruchirappalli is a huge market for Malaysia as a large portion of India’s Malaysia population is from that region of India.
6. AA is currently the only carrier in the Kuala Lumpur-Tiruchirappalli and Kochi markets but MAS is launching one daily flight to Kochi on 1-Sep-2013.

1. Malindo has decided against launching for now international services to Singapore, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries with the exception of Indonesia.
2. Malindo has opted to leave the Malaysia-Thailand market for Thai Lion, a new joint venture carrier which is currently in the process of securing an operating certificate from Thailand civil aviation authorities.
3. While India is the seventh largest international market from Malaysia it is relatively under-served, partially because of the pull-out of AA X, which dropped Delhi and Mumbai in early 2012 as part of a network restructuring.
4. Malindo prior to its Mar-2013 launch was able to secure from Malaysian authorities most of the traffic rights to India that were previously held by AA X, which had about 8,200 weekly return seats in the market.
5. Malindo has been preparing for several months to launch India services but is still waiting for final approval from Indian authorities, which it needs before it can formally announce its four planned India routes and begin ticket sales.

1. Malindo currently operates a fleet of four 737-900ERs and two ATR 72s.
2. The international network expansion will be supported by the delivery of two additional 737-900ERs in Sep-2013, which will give the carrier a fleet of six 737-900ERs.
3. Malindo plans to end 2013 with a fleet of 10 aircraft as it plans to also take delivery of two more ATR 72s in Aug-2013 and Oct-2013 respectively.
4. Malindo is also looking at potentially using one of its turboprops to operate domestic flights within east Malaysia from a second turboprop base at Kota Kinabalu.
5. International flights are also expected at Kota Kinabalu from 2H2014, initially to Indonesian destinations, as part of the second phase of the carrier’s international expansion.
6. This phase will also include flights from Kuala Lumpur to North Asia, including mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

AirAsia Indonesia's initial public offering (IPO), which is expected to raise some US$200 million, has been delayed till as late as the first quarter of next year, said AirAsia Bhd group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
The IPO was originally planned for the first quarter of 2013.

Polonia Airport manager said the airline began looking for hotels only after heated arguments with passengers.
The flight was scheduled to leave at 7.10pm local time on Sunday but was cancelled and rescheduled for 11am the next day.
Fokls following the incident, AA suspended its activities at the airport. Heheheheheheh!!

The Jakarta Globe reported that passengers detained an AA employee and prevented him from leaving the airport until the airline gave them a confirmation on their flight departure.
A passenger said the disorder was a spontaneous response of passengers who were infuriated by AA employees' failure to resolve the problem.
Now someone can't fly! So how?

Folks, AA has been rapped over the knuckles by Medan's Polonia Airport authority and could face sanctions for an incident in which its stranded passengers vandalised facilities at the airport, according to reports.

Folks, "Severe Typhoon Utor" is currently moving across the northern part of the South China Sea, in the general direction of the west coast of Guangdong.
Airasia group flights have been affected by "Severe Typhoon Utor"!
Q: If I miss my connecting flight or hotel reservation due to a flight reschedule by AirAsia and I've already paid, what should I do?
A: Like other point to point carriers, AirAsia is not liable for the loss of hotel bookings as a result of rescheduled flights.
We always do our best to adhere to the published schedule. We are fully aware that reschedules not only disrupt our guests' travel plans, it affects our on time performance too.

KLCI up 11 points but sadly AA is injure.
Could it be that the 2QE not impressive?
Could it be the operational expeneses getting higher every month?
Could the load factor be at 80% if there is no cancellation of flights every single day?
Remember folks, for this Q, AA will take delivery of five A320. Investors have short memories!! Heheheheheh!!

Of course sometimes planes at AA are cancelled due to such things as mechanical failure, airport delay and/or closure and bad weather.
But some AA flights are cancelled well in advance of the scheduled departure, sometimes over a week prior.
So how now, folks?

In other words, if AA don't think that it is economic to run a flight i.e they don't think they will make money they will cancel it.
Passengers may be offered one of the following:
The next available flight
A flight to the same destination within 48 hours
A credit to the same value of the flight, to be used for a rebooking within 3 months.

Folks, it is unclear sometimes why flights are cancelled by AA. In fact, many people are suggesting that the reason AA cancel flights is because that they are not full of passengers.

Folks, all airlines cancel flights from time to time. AA are no different, cancelling flights and putting passengers on another plane.
Cancellations are frustrating and costly to the passenger, meaning that arrangements have to be changed at the last minute, for such things as hotels, tours and meetings.
So how?
