Automotive semiconductor content soars
Automotive chip set companies used to be legacy node adopters. Now, they are engaging in TSMC’s 7nm process, as advanced features in cars (autonomous and predictive collision avoidance) require intensive computing power. For the automotive market, Dr. Mark Liu expects GPU speed to improve 25x and usage of sensors per car to rise 4x over 2016-20. Fabrication of high speed GPUs requires advance nodes. Automotive sales growth is likely to be flattish but TSMC expects rising semiconductor content to propel automotive semiconductor sales CAGR to 8% in 2016-20.

Market Report
March 2016
RV shipments to retailers totaled 40,740 units in the month of March this year, up 13.9% over the previous month and ahead of this same month last year by 11.5%, based on a survey of manufacturers. This was the largest single monthly total for all RVs since March 2006. Seasonally adjusted, the March total this year represented an annualized rate of more than 420,000 units, the highest run rate in more than 10 years.
Year to date, first quarter shipments have now climbed to 108,195 units, 11.5% ahead of this same period last year. On a seasonally adjusted basis, 1st quarter shipments were running at an annualized rate of more than 430,000 units, 12.2% ahead of the pace reported for this same period last year.
Both towable and motorhome categories were reported at higher totals than this same three month period in 2015 with a greater unit increase for all towable RVs, largely conventional travel trailers, while all motorhomes improved by a higher percentage total, led by type C motorhomes.

We maintain our target prices and earnings forecasts for the Rubber Products companies under our coverage. Prices of these stocks have retraced strongly, as the Ringgit staged a rebound along with crude oil prices. We continue to maintain our sector rating at NEUTRAL and for sector exposure prefer Top Glove for its undemanding valuations and improving operational efficiencies.

Most exports to US are powder-free nitrile and latex gloves
Powdered gloves are mostly found in latex gloves that allow for a better fit. For the companies under our coverage, Top Glove and Supermax have the highest proportion of powdered gloves in their product mix, at 40% and 28%, respectively. Hartalega and Kossan are nitrile-centric manufacturers. However, we gather that most glove exports (90%) to the US have been gradually switched to powder-free nitrile or latex gloves as the FDA has long highlighted the health risks of powdered gloves. The US is also the biggest buyer of nitrile gloves. We maintain our NEUTRAL sector call on the development, as we think that the manufacturers are well-positioned given that they have diversified aggressively into nitrile gloves in anticipation of the strong demand and a shift towards nitrile gloves. In fact, this development could expedite the adoption of nitrile gloves due to the severity of the health risks highlighted. Hartalega would be the biggest beneficiary in the event of a sudden demand surge for nitrile gloves, in our view, as it has the biggest nitrile glove production capacity and delivery track record.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday, 21 March,
issued a proposal to ban the use of powdered medical gloves in the
medical industry. We do not expect any significant impact as most
exports to US are nitrile gloves and powder-free latex gloves. In fact,
this ban could expedite the higher adoption of nitrile gloves, which
bodes well for the sector as a whole. Maintain NEUTRAL.

RV Growth to Continue in 2016
The recreation vehicle (RV) industry’s shipments will reach 381,100 units in 2016, a 2.0% increase above the 2015 total of 374,246, according to a new forecast from the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association.
The forecast was prepared by RV industry analyst Dr. Richard Curtin, and released at RVIA’s annual meeting held in Tucson, Arizona.
“Last year marked the longest period of sustained growth in the past fifty years,” said RVIA’s new president, Frank Hugelmeyer. “The industry has recovered from the recession, and we’re looking forward to sustained growth into the future.”
The forecasted total for 2016 is more than double the industry’s 2009 recession low, and is being driven by an improving economy, a deep-seated preference of consumers for the RV lifestyle and innovative RV designs
“The favorable RV outlook is based on continued gains in jobs and wages, as well as low inflation and interest rates,” said Curtin. “Although interest rates, inflation and gas prices will move up in the future, there is no reason to expect a sudden increase during the year ahead.”
The 2016 gains are expected to continue the strong performance of conventional travel trailers, and type C motorhomes.
The RV industry’s resurgence reflects the ability of manufacturers to quickly deliver new features and options that appeal to changes in the marketplace.
Dr. Curtin noted there is a wide band of possible outcomes around the current RV forecast because of unusual levels of uncertainty in economic data and the political arena. These uncertainties are expected to be offset by strong and unyielding consumer preferences for the RV lifestyle.

Bontrager Reports on Strength of RV Market and RVIA
In remarks at RVIA’s Annual Membership Meeting on March 1 in Tucson, AZ, RVIA Chairman of the Board Derald Bontrager told members that RV shipments are expected to continue to grow in 2016 and that the association is as robust as the surging RV market.
In looking ahead to next year, Bontrager reported that RV wholesale shipments are anticipated to reach 381,800 units, a rise of two percent over the 2015 total. This projection comes on the heels of a year that saw RV shipments increase five percent to 374,246 units.
The forecasted total is more than double the industry’s recession low, and would be the highest mark since 2006.
