Malaysia's missing-plane crisis has exposed the shortcomings of a ruling regime already wrestling with a rapidly shrinking support base, fierce racial divisions and international criticism of its tough handling of political opponents.

The same government has ruled since Malaysia's birth in 1957, and political observers said its much-criticised response to the jet drama is symptomatic of years of institutional atrophy under an ethnic Malay elite known for cronyism.

Analysts said rancour over the still-unexplained disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 and its 239 people, two-thirds of whom were Chinese, could also complicate plans to draw closer to China – Malaysia's biggest trading partner and a growing source of tourist revenue.

"The general level of Malaysian political performance, competence and adequacy has plummeted," said Clive Kessler, a Malaysia politics researcher at the University of New South Wales, who cites a "long, slow, protracted crisis of governance" over the past decade.

Experts stress that any country would struggle to cope with the plane's baffling disappearance on March 8, and Malaysia denies mishandling it.

But allegations of incompetence and evasiveness have clearly unsettled the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

BN is unused to being challenged by Malaysia's meek, state-dominated press and has basked in decades of admiration of Malaysia as an economically successful melting pot, despite longstanding criticism over policies that discriminate against non-Malay minorities.

But ashen-faced officials have been subjected to daily grillings by combative foreign media in daily briefings in sometimes tense scenes beamed live in Malaysia and around the world.

"This is not a good look for Malaysia. I do think that the Barisan government has done some serious damage to its international reputation," said Michael Barr, an Asian politics expert at Australia's Flinders University.

The affair also has trained attention on BN's bruising political tactics, particularly its treatment of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar, who accuses the government of hurling false criminal charges against him in a bid to halt the stunning recent successes of his opposition alliance, was convicted of sodomy and sentenced to five years in jail just hours before MH370 took off.

The verdict, denounced by rights groups and questioned by Washington, was dragged into the MH370 media glare after it was revealed that the flight's captain, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, was a member of Anwar's political party.

"With an international audience watching, this is showing that what (Malaysia's government) thinks is acceptable here, is not at all tolerable by international standards," said Bridget Welsh, a Malaysia politics analyst at Singapore Management University.

BN is routinely rapped by anti-graft groups for widespread corruption and cronyism – Defence and acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, the government's face on MH370, is the cousin of Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Even China's opaque Communist Party leadership has criticised Malaysia's perceived lack of transparency, while Chinese relatives of passengers angrily allege a cover-up.

Pragmatic Beijing is unlikely to upset mutually beneficial trade links, but the plane drama will certainly cause economic worry in Malaysia, said Welsh.

Exports to China have become critical to maintaining the growth BN banks on for support.

Bilateral trade has soared – up 11.8% in 2013 to US$106 billion (RM350.7 billion), according to Chinese figures. Najib and China's President Xi Jinping last year pledged still-cosier ties and targeted US$160 billion in trade by 2017.

The flow of Chinese tourists to Malaysia also has accelerated, hitting 1.8 million in 2013, up 15% year–on–year, behind only Singaporean and Indonesian visitors.

"This will require a significant effort to rebuild Malaysia's credibility abroad," Welsh said of the potential economic impact.

"Once you lose it, it takes time to win back."

The crisis comes at a bad time for the mild-mannered Najib, who launched a reform drive three years ago in a failed bid to shore up voter support. That has been abandoned under pressure from conservatives in his ruling party, and Najib appears weakened.

Malaysian voters have deserted BN at an accelerating pace over corruption, rule of law concerns, and a sense of drift.

Anwar's opposition won more votes than BN in May 2013 elections but the ruling coalition retained parliament thanks to seat allocations that favour its rural Malay base.

In particular, Malaysia's sizable Chinese community – whose industriousness is a critical component of growth – increasingly chafe under a decades-old system of preferences for Malays.

To enforce its intolerance of dissent, the Malaysian government deploys powerful tools of control. Until September 2011, the Internal Security Act (ISA) was a catch-all deterrent to those who spoke out openly against the government.

It sanctioned detention without trial and swept many opposition members into solitary confinement. In its place, authorities have of late been commandeering the Sedition Act to silence critics with increasing vigour.

This insidiousness has come to haunt the Malaysian government in its current time of need. True, as Hishamuddin said, "This is not a normal investigation".

But his and his cohorts' mishandling of crisis communications has made the government look shifty instead of perhaps being just plain incompetent, adding rocket fuel to the plethora of theories on the plane's whereabouts.

Hishammuddin - himself - is political royalty: He's the current prime minister's cousin, the son of Malaysia's third prime minister and nephew of its second. With his blood ties, he could easily be Malaysia's next prime minister.

Ethnicity and connections are highly likely to determine one's fate in Malaysia. Lucrative affirmative action policies promote ethnic Malays over the more than 30 percent Chinese and Indian minorities. The situation translates into each Malaysian being born with a semi-pre-ordained destiny - boosted by state coffers - that will decide which university you choose, what jobs you get, how many children you have, or even whether you end up in the cabinet.

Meanwhile, the elite have enriched themselves through a cosy network of crony capitalism that venomously lashes out at those who threaten its existence. Malaysia ranks third, behind only Russia and Hong Kong, in The Economist's crony capitalism index 2014, a list of "countries where politically-connected businessmen are most likely to prosper".

It's a sad indictment for a country that was once celebrated as having as much economic potential as South Korea.

Seize control of the situation

Social media, Asia's rising economic clout and irreversible globalisation mean the insular behaviour of the Malaysian government is long past its sell by date.

A Malaysian love of communication has neatly translated into a wholehearted adoption of the internet and social media - and with great effect. More and more Malaysians are turning to alternative web sites like Malaysiakini, The Malaysia Insider and Free Malaysia Today to source their news.

Indeed, the opposition's popularity partly rests on the delivery of its message through Facebook, SMS and whatsapp. Last year, the opposition's frontline social media campaign helped it wrestle away the government's crucial two thirds parliamentary majority, needed to change the constitution.

It's time the ruling coalition acknowledged that its supremacy - which has benefitted the few at the cost of many - needs a serious overhaul.

As a communications professional, my message to the government would be: Yes, this is not a normal investigation, but instead of playing victim to events, leverage the nexus of abnormality, tragedy and interest in the story to recreate a new Malaysia.

Malaysia Airlines: 'This is not a normal investigation'
Malaysia's vanishing airplane catastrophe exposes the country's political and social fault lines.

The crisis over Malaysia's missing Flight MH370 would surely test any government. But Malaysia's handling of the search, investigation and communication with the outside world has thrown it into an uncomfortable spotlight and caught it severely off guard.

The catastrophe is exposing the deep fault lines characterising the country's political economy. Since independence from the British in 1957, Malaysia's ruling elite have built and reinforced a political system that has institutionalised their cultural and economic dominance.


Inconsistency

The system is so entrenched, it shapes and permeates all layers of Malaysian society. Now we're seeing it play out in how the administration is managing and communicating the investigation to the rest of the world.

A catalogue of backtracking is defining the investigation thus far, frustrating the families of those on board and provoking a backlash of anti-government feeling.

We've seen Malaysian officials contradict each other over vital early details about MH370's satellite communications systems. Acting Transport Minister Hishamuddin Hussein and Malaysian Airlines CEO, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, have disagreed over whether the system was switched off before or after the flight's co-pilot uttered the now infamous signoff: "Alright goodnight" to ground control on the morning of March 8 when the plane disappeared.

Consequently, the pilot and co-pilot, Zaharie Shah and Fariq Ab Hamid, became the first suspects, in a possible plot to sabotage or hijack the Boeing 777, which led to bewilderment and distress amongst the families.

Inconsistencies also stood out in the police investigation. At one point, Hishamuddin said police officers had visited the homes of the pilots as early as March 9, the day after the aircraft vanished. But police chief Khalid Abu Bakar then confused the issue by saying officers had in fact not gone to the pilots' homes.

Things were muddled from the start. The hunt for the ill-fated jet began on March 8 in the South China Sea, was abandoned and diverted to the Andaman Sea and Indian Ocean.

Malaysians are concerned about the state of readiness of their military, after radar tracked an unidentified object moving west over peninsular Malaysia on March 8 and the air force took no further action to ascertain what that object was.

Sources close to the government have said, off-the-record since they are not authorised to talk to the media, that they are unsure how to manage the message.

Sure, it is a trial that would test any government, agency or communications team. With a daunting search involving more than 20 countries and stretching across some 6.2 million square miles, it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Yet, there are some fundamentals here that Malaysian government agencies aren't following. What they should be doing is: Verify the incoming information; unify the message; decide which agency takes control of its dissemination and keep the families informed at all times.

The baffling stream of information must be heart-breaking for the relatives of the 227 passengers and crew. Of those, 154 are Chinese, a ratio which has prompted the mainland to rally behind their cause. Families of the victims have been filmed shouting at Malaysian officials as their grievance builds over the lack of information and disorienting turn of events.

China's Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Hong Lei, has even urged Malaysia to provide, "comprehensive and correct information".


Malaysian government under microscope

Let's put it into context.

The global glare of publicity is landing on an administration deeply uncomfortable with any level of scrutiny.

Malaysia's ruling party keeps tight control of all aspects of domestic media - it is either state-sponsored, choked by authorities, or opposition-led. Media outlets or editors that dare question the administration perish by the wayside, or are ordered back in line.

At election time, the New Straits Times newspaper, a mouthpiece for the ruling coalition will be awash with barely rewritten government press releases, eulogising about the "achievements" of those in power.

What has this to do with Flight MH370? This stranglehold on free expression has nurtured a government unused to being cross-examined in public and more accustomed to changing its mind and message at will.

Moreover, the lack of oxygen given to rational democratic debate within Malaysia has fostered a cosseted leadership that either goes on the attack or retreats to its ideological ivory tower when it feels imperiled.

But speculation something secret has been pressed into service is just that. It’s also worth considering the track record of the media outlet offering this analysis, as it has twice of late jumped to alarmist conclusions about intelligence matters. Fairfax media, the source of the notion that MH370 was found by spooksats this week, followed Crikey by reporting in July last year that a subsidiary of Telstra, Australia’s dominant telco, had agreed to US surveillance of voice traffic on a submarine cable. The “secret document” Crikey uncovered was actually a pro-forma document any submarine cable operator landing in the US signs. Those documents all authorise surveillance, so the notion Telstra alone had thrown open its digital doors was dubious.

In November 2013, another report suggested Telstra’s purchase of deep packet inspection products represented a surveillance effort. As we pointed out at the time, it would be of more interest if a major telco did not operate deep-packet inspection kit as the absence of such tools would indicate lax management of mission-critical networks.

The Reg, and your correspondent, make mistakes. But mistakes like the ones recorded here are particularly unhelpful if they heighten public paranoia.

Happily, the source of the spooksat speculation has calmed down and reported on the existence of DigitalGlobe and even extracted a confirmation it is the source of the images that are sparking so much hope for information about MH370.

If only that story had come before the spooky speculation.

5 Eyes in the Sky: The TRUTH about Flight MH370 and SPOOKSATS

Comment That the US and other nations operate spy satellites capable of taking very detailed photographs of Earth is not in doubt. But the idea that those satellites have been pressed into service to find downed Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, and that it is therefore possible to infer some of the satellites’ capabilities, is very debatable.

That’s not stopped some of the media from suggesting that the reason Australia’s Maritime Safety Authority did not mention the source of the images it used as the basis for its decision to explore the Southern Ocean, was because to do so would reveal that they came from a military satellite.

In these post-Snowden days, such hints are serious stuff. The public knows a lot more about the scale and scope of US surveillance efforts than it did this time last year. Interest in such information remains keen.

But speculation the candidate MH370 debris was found by spooksats is obviously dubious, because the images ASMA has released are clearly marked as having their copyright assigned to DigitalGlobe, a US-based outfit known to operate at least three imaging satellites and which last year boasted it can, on request, photograph anywhere on Earth every 12 hours.

Also a well-established fact is that the US imaging satellite operators like DigitalGlobe are prevented from letting the public access the highest-resolution photographs their craft can capture. Those restrictions are made by the US government and DigitalGlobe appealed against them in September 2013.

As this report to a US Senate committee illustrates, that request has been taken seriously, largely for commercial reasons:

The Committee understands that a commercial data provider has requested licensing approval to collect and sell on the open market, electro-optical imagery with a ground sample distance of 0.25-meter. Recognizing the ability of U.S. commercial imagery providers to contribute more substantially to the national security mission at a lower cost point, and consistent with the U.S. policy of enabling U.S. companies to maintain a leadership position in this industry, the Committee encourages the GEOINT functional manager and the DNI to promptly review this licensing request. The Committee is concerned that foreign commercial imagery providers may soon be able to provide imagery at or better than the currently allowed commercial U.S. resolution limit of 0.5 meters. As foreign firms approach or surpass this level of resolution, current restrictions on U.S. commercial imagery data providers put the United States at a competitive disadvantage and may harm an industrial base that is important to national security.

Perhaps DigitalGlobe’s fleet can do even better than .25 metre resolution. If it can, it is entirely reasonable to assume it would be shared with the US’s partners in the “Five Eyes” intelligence-sharing alliance, one of which is Australia. And Australia operates a Defence Imagery and Geospatial Organisation (DIGO) that boasts its capabilities include “the process of examining an image collected from satellites or aircraft to identify features, describe activity and interpret what is occurring at a given place on the Earth’s surface.”

AMSA has cited DIGO as a source.

For what it is worth, it is known that the US government rents satellites. In 2013 it even leased a Chinese satellite, according to US News.

It’s therefore entirely plausible that DIGO and its ilk around the world regularly receive 0.25 metre or better resolution images from a DigitalGlobe or other commercial satellite and that its find of the “credible” candidate for MH370 debris is the result of business as usual, not special efforts.

It is conceivable that US authorities spotted the candidate debris using classified, never-for-public-eyes sources and then made it known where those searching for MH370 should look. It’s also a little bit plausible, because while DigitalGlobe has created a crowdsourced image database to help the search for MH370, it appears that effort is not the source of yesterday’s find.

If the US went to such lengths to conceal its capabilities, that’s a matter for wider debate.

Malaysian Airlines today confirmed that flight MH370 had been carrying highly flammable lithium-ion batteries in its cargo hold, re-igniting speculation that a fire may have caused its disappearance.
The admission by CEO Ahmad Jauhari comes four days after he denied the aircraft was carrying any dangerous items and nearly two weeks after the plane went missing.
He said the authorities were investigating the cargo, but did not regard the batteries as hazardous - despite the law dictating they are classed as such - because they were packaged according to safety regulations.

hishammuddin anwar ibrahimKAJANG: Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim late last night demanded for the resignation of acting Defence Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein for failing to secure the nation’s security in the wake of the missing MH 370.

“Why was the Marconi radar not working? The government purchased that radar but there was no mention of it in the reports.

“If this question cannot be answered, then the Defence Minister must resign. National security is at stake,” Anwar told about 10,000 supporters at the Himpunan Reformasi 2.0 rally in Kajang here..

The Marconi radar was purchased by the government when Anwar was the Defence Minister in mid-1990s. The radar is located at Gong Kapas, Terengganu.

Flight MH370 flight carrying 239 passengers and crew went missing on March 8 on a routine flight from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Beijing, China.

The Boeing 777-200ER aircraft went missing on civilian radar, heading for Vietnam, as it was passing the South China Sea. An hour later the plane was spotted by the military radar in the western side of peninsula Malaysia, near Pulau Perak, heading towards the Andaman Sea.

Search and rescue teams from 27 countries are currently scouring through the Andaman Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean to find the runaway plane.

Anwar also called for Hishammuddin’s resignation for the failure by the military to identify MH370, when it was spotted on military radar.

He said the government should not cast any aspersions on the pilot of the ill fated flight Capt Zaharie Ahmad Shah.

“It is you who is complacent and failed to maintain the radar. Do not blame Zaharie. He is competent and professional,” said Anwar.

The Opposition Leader, just after the plane went missing, denied knowing the pilot but later retracted the statement when it was made known that Zaharie was an uncle of his daughter-in-law.

The PKR supremo also said the government’s handling of the whole MH370 fiasco showed that it lacked transparency.

“This is the first time China has come out strongly against us. You failed to share information and this caused China and its people to be upset,” said Anwar.

The Himpunan Reformasi 2.0 rally was held to show solidarity to Anwar and DAP national chairman Karpal Singh who are seen as victims of selective persecution and to shore up support for PKR candidate Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in the Kajang by-election which will see polling tomorrow.

The theme for the assembly is ‘Return justice and end tyranny’. Similar assemblies are in the pipeline throughout the nation and the final rally would be held in Kuala Lumpur.

As for the Kajang by-election contested by his wife, Azizah and MCA vice-president Chew Mei Fun, he urged voters to avoid scuffles.

“Don’t cause traffic congestion as we have concerns that some parties may use that as a reason to sabotage the by-election,” he said.

The Kajang state seat fell vacant following the resignation of incumbent assemblymen Lee Chin Cheh of PKR on Jan 27. Early polling would be held on March 19.

The state seat comprises 39,728 registered voters. At the last general election in May 2013, the seat saw a voter turnout of 87.9% with 541 spoilt votes.

Anwar Ibrahim has questioned how the UK Daily Mail found out about his family links with the pilot of ill-fated MH370.

Anwar Daily Mail UKKAJANG: Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim said someone had tipped off information to British newspaper Daily Mail on his links with captain of MH370 Zaharie Ahmad Shah and news was immediately picked up by Umno cybertroopers.

“The minute the newspaper published the information Umno cybertroopers and mainstream media went to town with it,” said the PKR supremo during Himpunan Reformasi 2.0 assembly at Kajang Stadium last night.

“Who passed the information to The Daily Mail that Zaharie is related to me?” asked Anwar.

The Daily Mail is the first newspaper that reported Zaharie’s links to Anwar. Zaharie is a distant relative and a life member of PKR.

Earlier, Anwar called for Defence Minister Hishamuddin Hussein’s resignation for failing to ensure the security of the nation.

The MH370 flight carrying 239 passengers and crew members went missing on March 8. The Beijing-bound flight made a U-turn and is believed to have headed out towards the Indian Ocean.

Himpunan Reformasi 2.0 assembly was held to show solidarity support for people who have been victims of selective persecution and to shore up support for Anwar’s wife Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

We cannot blame it on the international media for the bad publicity that we are getting over the way how Najib and Hishammuddin handle the missing aircraft. Just observe how the Australian prime minister, Tony Abbott spoke in parliament, while his defence minister, David Johnstone said “something definite” would be known within 48 hours. This is what the world wants to know: A firm decision and a timeline.

Until today, despite being prompted by DAP Supremo, Lim Kit Siang, neither Najib nor Hishammuddin has the guts to brief the parliament about this national crisis! Where are we heading to? And Mahathir should take cognizance that these two cousins were under his tutelage for over two decades.

One can say that Najib may have his Rosmah baggage, but what about Hishammuddin, whose wife was strangely spared from Teresa Kok’s Chinese New Year talkshow? I am sure that even if Mahathir were to take over and be in charge of the SAR, he too will fail badly because of his character that pisses the international partners in the efforts to find the missing plane.

It can’t be that both senior politicians, Najib and Hishammuddin cannot brief the Malaysian parliament! They are in fact duty bound to brief the Malaysian lawmakers of this current national crisis that we are facing.

So, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in his recent lecture at University Malaya wants to be remembered as the man who helped one percent of the country’s population become super-rich, while Najib Abdul Razak, his blue eye boy will be the Prime Minister who is impoverishing the middle- and lower-income group through his drastic subsidies cut and GST?

Mahathir must not forget his squabble with Australian Prime Minister, Paul Keating in his early years as a prime minister. Keating had called him the ‘recalcitrant’, a word that many Malaysians initially took offence to in the early 90s. He was also snubbed by the US Vice President Al-Gore within the same decade. It cannot be that a national leader should come under the criticism of two world leaders.

Looking back, Mahathir was indeed the recalcitrant who has destroyed Malaysia. After nearly 60 years as a nation, we are still fighting who has the right over the use of the word ‘Allah’, and whether the State Enactments were meant to restrictvthe freedom of non-Muslims to use the so-called Islamic word or merely to protect the shallow-faith of Muslims from being easily influenced by words in the way people who are not Muslims.

We are still fighting over race and religion. With the Biro Tata Negara (BTN) that was introduced during his time, many of the people in his generation have been brainwashed that they cannot think beyond the coconut shell that they have found themselves in.

Mahathir said that it was not cronyism, but we as a nation, need the rich people. While it is true that there are some who have become philanthropists, and they deserve the respect from the people, there are others who are hoarding the limelight for the wrong reasons.

Recently, the son of Rosmah Mansor from her first marriage was in the limelight bringing shame to the country. At the same time, a British judge said that a Malaysian couple is clogging precious court time trying to contest a divorce in England. We can go on and on with a 101 examples but I’d like to remind Mahathir of his trip to Mozambique.

In Mozambique, Malaysians have a bad name. The then Southern Bank went on a delegation led by Dr Mahathir himself. It started a branch office there, which subsequently had to be closed down, with many Mozambicans felt they were cheated of their life’s savings!

Not to mention the Perwaja failure which cost the country billions of Ringgit, Mahathir was supposed to start another Proton factory in Mozambique,with his one ‘mega’ dreams to expand into the African market, but until today, Proton cars are still rare in that part of the world. This is what has happened to our country’s coffers over the entire period when he was prime minister.

Shame on Mahathir! His 22 years as prime minister has failed to build up the talents in the country to be able to handle the most difficult crisis. This is exactly what we are seeing in the past two weeks. Since the MH370 aircraft went missing, the country has come under heavy criticisms from within (both politicians and ordinary men on the street) as well as harsh condemnation from people who understand the airline industry well.

As rakyat, when we read these stories from the international media, one thing is sure: We have totally lost our confidence in our present cabinet and the ruling coalition. As one celebrated Malaysian author puts it: “Confidence in our leadership is brittle, and it takes little for frustrations to boil over.”

In my opinion, Barisan Nasional has long overstayed the Malaysian hospitality, and God is fair, He will make sure that our leaders reap what they sow. If the same people continue to lead the country, it will go through one crisis after another until a new Government sanctioned by the rakyat takes over.

Throughout the entire period, Najib was more interested with his chicken talk, rather than to take charge of the search and rescue (SAR) efforts. He is giving more time to talk about a RM1 a bird ‘cock-and-bull’ story than to try to recover the missing aircraft with 239 people on board. In the spiritual sense, I guess, Najib does not even realise that the blood of these people are on his head.

Just before he kicks the bucket, Mahathir should realise that the Australians are the people who came to our aid to fight the Communists during the Emergency. Now, with the missing MH370, it is also the Australians who are working around the clock to help relocate the missing aircraft although it was the Malaysian maverick who antagonised Australia on a number of occasions during his tenure as prime minister.

As one looks back, Malaysia has been in the bad books of the international media because of a long history of bad relationships caused by Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself that his successor, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was trying to mend.

Malaysia has the income but not the government to reach developed maturity, says editor

Malaysia has set a target of entering the ranks of developed countries by 2020.

But judging by its handling of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 incident, many observers, including Ding Gang, a senior editor with The People's Daily, believe that target will not be met.

If it were just a matter of raising the per capita income, then based on its per capita income of RM36,000 in 2013, Malaysia is emplaced in the middle-income group (usually defined as bookended by a per capita GDP of US$1,000 (RM3,300) - US$12,000 (RM39,500), and has the potential of reaching developed maturity.

But according to the Asian Development Bank that created the concept, GDP per capita is only a superficial indicator.

A necessary attendant to determining the qualitative position of a country is its governance, particularly for middle-income nations that have to deal with problems particular to that postion – including rising labour costs, a lack of technological innovation, and subsequent economic stagnation.

Good governance in this regards means encouraging competition to maximize the value of talent and encourage innovation.

By such a measure, Malaysia's poor response following the disappearance of flight MH370 reflects the fact that the country is still way behind in terms of governance, said Ding Gang in his column in The People's Daily.

The intial chaotic dissemination of information, he said, reflects the flaws in Malaysia's system of governance.

And these flaws are a consequence of a lack of secularisation, an abundance of natural wealth that has disguised failings in leadership, and a racial approach to many aspects of Malaysian life, according to Ding Gang.

Malaysia's abundant raw products such as oil, rubber and oil palm provide a substanial proportion of the government's budget and expenditure, but it's a double-edged blessing because the wealth has disguised and fostered an inefficient governing class.

The writer goes on to note the racial bias or quotas in many aspects and sectors of Malaysian life – the lack of non-Muslim leaders and civil servants, the racial considerations in admission to universities and colleges, right down to the issuance of taxi licences.

The expressed motive of such race-tinted policies of promoting social stabity among the races effectively means the closing of opportunities for upward mobility and competition.

This in turn has led to corruption and the creation of a coddled conservative group with vested interests who do not want the boat rocked.

In 2001, then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that Malaysia was a Muslim country. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak also declared in 2007 that Malaysia has never been a secular country.

The problem with mixing religion with politics, syaria law and civil law, is that it not only creates bifocal division, but also encourages the tendency to lean towards social conservatism, an illusory facade of harmony and unity.

What's dysfunctional is not elite politics itself, but a rigid system that is responsible for selecting the political elite and that does not encourage upstart talent. – March 20, 2014.
