GEORGE TOWN: Penang-based precision part and component manufacturer AT Systemisation Bhd plans to expand its precision tooling business by investing about RM10mil in a new Bayan Lepas plant this year, its group executive director Mak Siew Wei said. The plant is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.

The expansion will enable the company to make component parts used in the oil and gas sector and the medical industries. Customers from these two sectors are currently mainly from Singapore. The company plans to expand its customer base to Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei.Mak said that for its 2013 financial year ending Febuary 2014, the oil and gas and medical sectors help to generate about 9% of the group’s precision tooling business.

Says Mak: “For the 2014 fiscal year, these two sectors are expected to contribute 15%.”He added that for the nine months of the 2013 fiscal year, the precision tooling segment generated orders worth about RM16.6mil from the telecommunication and automative industries.Mak said the group’s precision tooling business is an important part of its business as it contributed about 80% of its revenue.The industrial automation and machinery business contributes to the remaining 20%.

“Because it is the key driver of our growth, we are leveraging on our precision tooling capabilities to produce the high-value components used for oil and gas equipment,” he said.According to credit rating agency Moody Investors Sevices, Asia’s oil and gas exploration and production sector in Asia is positively rated. Earnings are projected to grow by 5% this year.

“Companies are investing more in drilling than on land acquisitions.As for the medical services sectors, AT has taken note of the growing domestic consumption of medical devices.

The Association of Malaysian Medical Industries reported that domestic consumption of medical devices was expected to grow by 50.4% to reach US$1.7bil (RM5.2bil) in 2015 from US$1.13bil (RM3.44bil) in 2010.“This means the local market is growing at about 10% annually, with a domestic consumption of about US$1.46bil for last year.

This explains our strategy to move into component and parts services for the medical device industries this year,” Mak said
