The prospect of 25 percent U.S. tariffs on steel imports has raised fears of a global trade war but steel producers outside North America believe they can weather the storm without too much disruption to their business or steel prices.

While the United States imported 36 million tonnes of steel in 2017, with Canada, Brazil and South Korea the leading suppliers, that was less than 8 percent of global steel market traded volumes of 473 million tonnes during the year.

Also, while tariffs would price some imports out of the U.S. market, analysts at consultants Wood Mackenzie estimate that at most 18 million tonnes would be diverted to other markets – or less than 4 percent of annual traded volumes.

“The volume is relatively small and won’t have a big impact on prices,” said Roberto Cola, vice president of the ASEAN Iron and Steel Council (AISC), which represents steelmakers in Southeast Asia.

SKYWORLD Development Sdn Bhd plans to develop projects worth RM2 billion in gross development value (GDV) by the second half of 2018 (2H18).

Founder and group MD Datuk Ng Thien Phing said the upcoming projects would comprise high-rise residential developments, a commercial hub, as well as the remaining phases of SkyAwani Series 3, which was unveiled at the end of 2017.

He said the upcoming projects would remain in the heart of Kuala Lumpur (KL), particularly the Gombak area, as it is the anchor location for the KL-based property developer.

“Despite the current soft sentiment in the property market — particularly the high-rise segment due to rising excess stocks, I am confident that our upcoming projects would continue to garner high response from our targeted buyers,” he told reporters at the unveiling ceremony of SkyWorld’s Quality Centre in KL yesterday.

“All of our residential components are priced affordably, between RM300,000 for our social housing projects (SkyAwani Series), and RM500,000 for other types of highrise projects aimed at the middle- and urban-affluent demographic,” he said.

“Therefore, our products are suited to fulfil the needs of urban dwellers, driven by its location and attractive pricing points.”

Among the projects that are in the pipeline are the Sky Meridien in Sentul KL — encompassing 780 units with about RM498 million GDV — and The Valleys at SkySierra with a total GDV of RM750 million.

A 4.5 acres (1.82ha) commercial hub in Setapak is also in the pipeline, which would house 46 units of threeand four-storey business suites.

Additionally, the remaining two towers of the SkyAwani Series 3 would be introduced within the stipulated time frame with a RM600 million GDV featuring 1,905 units. The first tower was launched in November last year.

The company is expected to strengthen its position in the central Klang Valley, utilising its remaining 130 acres of landbank, which has a potential total GDV of RM13 billion.

“We have no plans to expand outside of KL as, at the moment, we have ample of undeveloped land in KL at our disposal for future developments,” Ng said, adding that the company’s total unbilled sales currently stands at RM1 million.

SkyWorld unveiled a RM3.8 million new “Quality Centre” yesterday, aimed at championing QLASSIC/ CONQUAS quality commitments at all its developments in the city.

SEBERANG PERAI, Sept 19 — Leading semiconductor supplier Broadcom Limited opened a new RM59 million global distribution warehouse in Batu Kawan here today.

The warehouse, which will complete the backend of Broadcom's supply chain, will ship over 90 per cent of Broadcom's products directly to its customers.

“Broadcom's estimated export revenue by 2018 will be around RM65 billion, so it will be the largest electronics and electrical exporter in the country,” said International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed in his speech.

He said the largest electrical and electronics exporter in Malaysia now is Western Digital, which commanded an export revenue of RM20 billion.

“Broadcom's export revenue will greatly surpass Western Digital and its exports alone will take up 8 per cent of the overall exports in Malaysia, not only in E&E,” he said during a press conference after officiating the opening of the warehouse this morning.

He said the company may have only invested RM59 million in its new facility in Penang, but its impact on the industrial and manufacturing ecosystem will be significant.

It will create business opportunities for local small-medium industries and enterprises, the local supply chain and also the logistics industry, he added.

“In addition to this global distribution warehouse, which is managed by its principal hub, the company has plans to expand further with business spending of RM4.1 billion over the next 10 years such as in global production planning, quality management, strategic procurement and logistics management,” he said.

He said Broadcom will import 30 per cent of its chips from the United States, 30 per cent is from the local supply chain, and the rest from other countries.

“In its export, it will also only export 30 per cent to America and 70 per cent is to other countries,” he said.

“United States should not be concerned about huge trade deficits because what we export to America is the same as what we import from them,” he added.

Mustapa said Malaysia is now the world's seventh largest E&E exporter, with exports totalling RM287.7 billion last year.

“This industry has shown an upward trend in export for the past three years to contribute 36.6 per cent of total exports and 44.6 per cent of total manufacturing exports in 2016,” he said.

Broadcom Limited first started out as part of Hewlett-Packard in the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone in 1972.

It was formerly known as Avago Technologies Limited before changing its name to Broadcom Limited in February last year after acquiring US-based Broadcom Corporation.

The company currently has 1,100 employees in its facility in Bayan Lepas and 350 in the new facility in Batu Kawan.
