The Covid pandemic has roared again. Partly due to the winter in the Northern Hemisphere. During this cold and wet season, pandemic influenza and pandemic Covid re-emerge.

The vaccines have been researched, manufactured and marketed at rapid speed. Efficacy of the few report vaccines is very high 90% or so. The number of mild symptomatic cases given the vaccine were reduced by 90% compared to those not given the vaccine.

Many questions remain to be answered: Does giving the vaccine prevent asymptomatic Covid infection? Does giving the vaccine prevents the infected from infecting other people, i.e., prevents spread of the disease? Does giving the vaccine prevents severe Covid infection and death? These answers will not be forthcoming from the existing trials. Now that the vaccines have been approved for emergency fast use, conducting trials to answer these questions will be extremely difficult, if not impossible.

Thus, many countries have put in place voluntary reporting by those who are receiving or have been vaccinated with the new vaccines. With post-marketing surveillance, the big data may offer some answers which may not be detected in a trial of tens of thousands of people.

These trials have all reported efficacy and safety data for the 2 months of the trial. The 6 months data will be reported later. Therefore, to-date the companies conducting these trials with their vaccines have shared that the safety of these vaccines are acceptable. What maybe acceptable maybe interpreted variously by each person. Take note, the safety issues are up to 2 months of the trial. Ideally, 6 months or more maybe more comforting. According to many experts, you need about 6 months of study to know the long term safety profile of the vaccine, especially with regards to disease of the immune system or immune incompatibility.

Of particular concern, the m-RNA vaccines of Pfizer and Moderna are based on new technology, especially so since they will be used in a huge population. Even though the scientists and experts may express confidence in the vaccine, the truth is no one knows for sure. Only time will inform us. Therefore, for many, whether to accept the vaccine is a personal choice, based on their assessment of the efficacy, side effects, their personal risk of getting the disease and the benefit they perceive from the vaccination.

Vaccination will hopefully reduce the incidence of Covid infections. It is unlikely to eradicate this totally from the face of the earth. At most, it will bring this down to a manageable level. Vaccinating the most vulnerable also means reducing the number of deaths from Covid. Going forward, we will still be living in a changed wortld - post-Covid world. Observing social distancing, practise hand washing and selective wearing of mask in high risk situations will be the norm for at least the next 3 to 4 years. The use of gloves and PPE will remain high for a few years to come even when vaccines have been around for a year or two.

上述疫苗来自中国最大及历史最悠久的生物科技公司——中国医药集团有限公司（Sinopharm），目前正处于第三期临床试验。康尔国际与Sinopharm的合作协议维续至2023年9月24日。
