Banking stocks fell amid concerns Singapore's move to ease monetary policy might prompt regional central banks to do the same.

Malaysia's central bank held its key interest rate steady at 3.25 percent on Wednesday, as expected, saying inflation was expected to be lower than forecast and the economy remained on a steady growth path despite sharply lower commodity prices.

Is it good for banks or bad for banks?

The state-owned investment company (1MDB) needed more time to repay the debt as it was still in discussions with billionaire T. Ananda Krishnan, Malaysia's second richest person, they said.

Ananda may excercise an option, granted when he sold energy assets to 1MDB in 2012, to buy part of the Edra Global Energy Bhd unit, the people said.

“However, we take the comfort in the fact that Maybank’s exposure to 1MDB is guaranteed by the government of Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, the loans would be settled if the 1MDB IPO is successfully implemented this year. Hence, we do not see a high likelihood of full impairment for the loans,” it said.

MIDF, CIMB, RHB, Kenanga all recommended to buy Maybank. Just hope MIDF & Kenanga are right. CIMB and RHB are related to 1MDB, so logically they sokong Maybank.

AK has tons of $$$, we expected him to sell off his stake in Maxis by this year or next.
After selling off Maxis, estimated, he would have abt 50B in his pocket. So, lending 2B to 1MBD is just kacang putih to him.

Malaysian shares seen taking cue from US market, oil gains

By Chong Jin Hun / theedgemarkets.com   | February 4, 2015 : 7:33 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 4): Malaysian shares may take the cue from overnight gains in US stocks as crude oil prices rose further.

Firmer crude oil prices may also support the ringgit as the commodity constitutes a crucial component of the Malaysian economy.

Last Friday (Jan 30), the FBM KLCI closed lower at 1,781.26 points. The local stock market was closed for holidays last Monday and yesterday.

Yesterday, the ringgit strengthened to 3.6115 against the US dollar. This compared to 3.6337 a day earlier.

Today, Reuters reported that U.S. stocks jumped more than 1 percent on Tuesday, led by energy shares as oil prices extended their recent rally, while higher-than-expected January car sales also bolstered the advance.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 305.36 points, or 1.76 percent, to 17,666.4, the S&P 500 gained 29.18 points, or 1.44 percent, to 2,050.03 and the Nasdaq Composite added 51.05 points, or 1.09 percent, to 4,727.74.

U.S. crude oil prices rose 7 percent to settle at $53.05 . Brent and U.S. oil prices have risen roughly 19 percent since Wednesday's close. The S&P 500 energy index climbed 2.8 percent.

Despite the rise in crude oil prices, Malaysian liquified natural gas (LNG) exports will be closely watched in the near term.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch economist Chua Hak Bin said LNG prices could fall by some 50% by the middle of this year.

"Liquefied natural gas prices track oil prices, with a four to six-month lag.

"A 50% decline in LNG prices could shave the (Malaysian) current account surplus by about 2.5% to 3% of GDP, putting the risk of a current account deficit within striking distance," Chua wrote in a note.

Jason, why dreaming......???!!! Anything is possible!!! Trade at own risk

Posted by Prcmenon Menon > 2015-02-11 17:29 | Report Abuse

Jason n vinvin- both of you are right, my dream based on the fact that MBB does not have to declare its share of the loan to 1MDB as NPL as at 30.12.14 since it is only due 2 months instead of the 3months for its NPL classification. The NPL event may be declared in the notes under "events since the Balance sheet date" which again is fully recoverable.
Recent indications that foreigners are nett buyers.
Even then I could still be wrong in terms of price expectations...wish you all luck and trade at own risk.

just read that Ananda's Usaha Tegas will be paying the 2Bln before 18Feb after having received EOD(event of Default)notice from lender banks. Usaha Tegas is guarantor of the loan.

Luckyjing88 Divd paid in 2014 was RM0.55 (May/Oct) and DRIP (Divd reinvestment ) offerred were RM8.95 and RM9.30. At RM9.05 and the divd for 2015 stays @RM0.55(on assumption) the rate per $1 invested is 6.07%. If you benchmark the return against FD rate of 4% you are a winner . But of course there is a chance of capital loss and in the same page there is high possibility of capital gain at today's price. U decide.

HI those who hve invested earlier I am happy for u. The proposed divd is RM0.33 and u can choose to opt for the DRIP at a discounted price to be announced. This may sound trivial but just in case some u happily think u got a deal, pls consider RM10.65 as additional costs to the subs. (Revenue Stamp RM10 +postage RM0.60). If your subscription units are 100, the additional cost is RM0.1065 meaning if the offer price is RM9, the actual cost of the 100 is RM9.1065/unit.

Johann5354 Hi, I wld assume u want to know more abt DRIP. No, u cannot buy more than yr allocation. Example @33 sen divd you are entitled to RM330/1,000 shares and on assumption that only 30sen for DRIP @ RM9/share , yr right is RM300, giving u 33 shares to sub. So, in total u get RM33 cash Divd and 33 shares. Of course you hve the right to reject the offer and take RM330
