KUALA LUMPUR: A record high of 3,000 companies registered for Goods and Services Tax (GST) on Thursday.
The average registration per day is 1,000-1,500 companies a day.
However, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Chua Tee Yong is hopeful that the positive trend will continue.
“If we continue to maintain
this trend, we would be able
to get 200,000 companies registered by year-end,” he said at the launch of the GST implementation and its impact on the tourism industry seminar, here, yesterday.
The threshold for companies
eligible to be taxed with GST
is a turnover RM500,000 and above, which is one of the highest,
compared with neighbouring countries.
“Thailand’s threshold is above RM180,000. For the Philippines, it is above 140,000.
“In China, the registered threshold is between RM2,600 and RM10,000,” Chua said.
Businesses that register before September 30 are eligible for the industry-specific GST hand-holding training.
He said 42,000 companies have registered for GST to date.

“Overall, Budget 2015 will continue to be friendly to businesses and investors, without forgetting the rakyat, especially the lower-income group,” he explains.
According to Manokaran, the Government is expected to face a handful of macroeconomic challenges next year. These challenges include the rising cost of living and declining housing affordability among low-income group and first-time homebuyers. And with inflation expected to spike on the back of the GST implementation in April 2015, consumer spending will likely come under pressure and weigh on the economy.
Hence, Manokaran expects policies under Budget 2015 to strengthen economic fundamentals in the short to medium term, as that will benefit low and middle-income groups, small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) and key industries.
“We can expect the budget to address rising cost of living and issues pertaining to affordable housing and urban living,” he adds.

GST is a game changer,” declares Customs Goods and Services Tax (GST) director Datuk Subromaniam Tholasy at his Putrajaya headquarters.
With hundreds of officers under his wing, the jovial-looking Subromaniam is the point man for the Government as it undertakes its most radical tax overhaul since the Independence.
A political hot potato, the impending GST has been a subject matter the Government has skirted around since the days of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Finance Minister in the 90s. More than a decade later, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is finally taking the plunge to push forward the controversial flat rate consumption tax which will replace the Sales and Service Tax (SST).
His announcement that the GST would be effective April 1, 2015, had been highly-anticipated during Budget 2014 last October.
It will come during a time when the Government is striving to reduce the country’s fiscal deficit, which shrunk to 3.9% in 2013 compared with 6.6% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2009.
Malaysia aims to achieve a balanced budget by the end of this decade and the Government views the GST as a long overdue tax reform that will also increase its indirect tax revenue collection.
But the biggest challenge that the Najib administration faces is the perception that the GST will bring about general rise in the prices of goods and services.
Questions about rising prices are something that Subromaniam is continually bombarded with, even from ministers in the Cabinet.
