Another question raised is, "Why is such a smart person like calvintaneng who floods this forum with repeated words of wisdom, quoting from Buffett to Peter Lynch, got his 10 stocks so wrong in August 2017? I hope you agree his 10 stocks selection in August 2017 were just terrible, using whatever comparison measures.
Might calvintaneng be a better investor if he had taken time to study his own mistakes, before continuing to show to others his prowess and cleverness.
What lessons might calvintaneng gained from these 10 stocks of his? Since he did give the intrinsic values for each of these stocks, might we assume he did do some work on deriving these. If he did, he could have reworked his valuation and learned where he might have made his mistakes. His intrinsic values by any measures were just far too high. Was calvintaneng prone to mania or depression? Perhaps, in this hypomanic phase, calvintaneng could see no risk and just rewards, huge ones as so.?

An obvious question raised by calvintaneng's post in this thread is, "Why were his intrinsic values for these companies in August 2017 were so much higher than their share prices in August 2017?
Wasn't calvintaneng a clever chap, since he was able to identify so many undervalued stocks in August 2017? These were not just undervalued, they were severely undervalued; just look at calvintaneng's intrinsic values for these stocks.
Do you believe in the efficient market hypothesis? I do. But I don't agree that the stock market is efficient ALL the time. That's why the hard working investor can diligently sometimes find an undervalued good/great company to invest into.
But, calvintaneng was able to identify 10 deeply undervalued stocks. How did he come about his valuation of these stocks?
Did he apply conservative assumptions in his valuation of their intrinsic values? Perhaps he did, or perhaps he did not.
Did he make mistakes in their valuation? If yes, these were MANY mistakes, not just the occasional ones. Should we be cautious in his promotions? Perhaps, we should not be cautious over this calvintaneng's promotions despite so many obvious mistakes?
Perhaps, calvintaneng wished to blame these 10 stocks on bad luck. It was just bad luck on that period. In other times, he had been in better luck. Should calvintaneng blamed these high intrinsic values not being achieved by his 10 stocks to bad luck? Or perhaps, he should not.

The thrill of investing in stocks, using Peter Lynch's classification of companies.
1. Dutch Lady
A fast grower in its early days. Now a stalwart.
2. Nestle
A stalwart and slow grower. Generating high FCF with little capex requirement.
3. Aeon Credit.
A fast grower. Financial stock. High risk sector.
4. Guinness
A stalwart or slow grower.
5. Petdag
A fast grower over the last decade. Smaller company then, adding 50+ new petrol stations per year. Now a slow grower or stalwart.
6. HaiO
A gruesome stock that turned around in 2005 / 2006. Those who spotted this then would have a lot of gains when others started to show interest in it. Presently, a slow grower stock. Not to be dismissed.
7. KAF
For years, this stock lingered at price below its net asset value. In its book was a piece of land in Jalan Kia Peng which was worth a lot more. This land was subsequently repriced and the company eventually taken over by the majority shareholders. This was an asset play stock.
8. Topglove and Hartalega
These companies were fast growers. They are also in a cyclical sector. Essentially, they are cyclical growth stocks. Those who have own these stocks over the long term would have multibagger gains.
9. Tongher
A cyclical stock. Not easy to play in this sector. Presently, it is in its cyclical high.
10. Public Bank
A stalwart or slow grower.
11. Guan Chong
A turnaround and fast grower (but only for a year or so). Cyclical sector. Not easy to play these stocks but for those who spotted it in 2009, it did climbed 200% or so. However, to protect your gains, you need to sell and not hold long term. Not easy to play cyclical stocks. You need to buy right and also to sell right.
12. Pentamaster
A fast grower for the moment. A fast growth stock maybe highly priced. Be careful, but if you have spotted this before its price climbed, the rewards have been and can be huge.
13. GENM
Slow grower.
14. LPI
Slow grower that has delivered superior returns.
15. Scientex
Slow grower

1)Stalwarts
2)Fast Growers
3)Cyclicals
4)Turnarounds
5)Assets Play
6) Slow Growers

For someone who claims to be a master of Peter Lynch's teachings, does calvintaneng exhibits that he understands Peter Lynch's teaching well.
Yet, calvintaneng thinks someone does not know Peter Lynch's teaching well. Yet, remarkably, the same chap bought BONIA at 80 sen in 2019 on his own analysis.
Just compare and contrast.

Are we also surprised and amazed by the hero of NETX, calvintaneng's ebullience and broadcasting his fantastic fortune on BONIA and OPCOM, and cunningly silent on the other stocks. That is the hero of NETX in this forum.
Perhaps, he will write a follow up article on his 10 stocks pick. It is also honest to admit his mistakes (if he think this to be so). In my book, I always thought the integrity of the hero of NETX is doubtful.

Interestingly, I do own Bonia, one of the 10 stocks in the hero of NETX, calvintaneng's above list. It so happened that it is one of the two stocks that made a gain in his list. Yes, Bonia is the biggest winner in the above list. I must have done something not wrong. :-)
I bought Bonia in 2019 at 80 sen. It went up to 1.20 and I did not sell. Then it dropped to much much lower. Today it is much much higher. I have written on why I bought into Bonia in the Bonia thread a few weeks ago.

They have not sold any
That means that they have faith in the company
Unlike transmile, Megan media and seacera directors sold all Directors of Maybulk believe the Company prospects

Why did they not sell? Well, you need to fathom behavioural finance to understand more.
OTOH keep focus on the insiders.
I made a lot of money on Maybulk before it went down. Sold the majority of my shares before its decline few years back. My last few shares were sold off at 2.20 each.
When a company's fundamentals deteriorated, SELL.
In earlier years, Maybulk was a very good company to own. Its core business was profitable. However, the company made a lot of money when it sold its hard assets (carriers) for huge profits due to shortage of capacity in the industry. These extraordinary income boosted its cash and Maybulk rewarded its shareholders with generous dividends. Accordingly, its share price too increased.
All its directors owned substantial shares in their own names prior to 2008. Post 2008, this sector went into a decline. World trade diminished. Too many new carriers were built during the good time. There were too much capacity. BDI dropped. By the time its earnings were decimated, all its directors had sold all their shares. Yes, do keep an eye on the insiders' activities regarding their buying and selling.
Maybulk is a hard asset company. It is capital intensive with high fixed costs and high capex. There are better companies to hold long term.

add on to A witness for my disastrous stock: muiind promoted by calvintaneng
30/11/2019 11:34 PM
i hated calvintaneng, if it was not him talking so sure about selling assets the only way for court settlement, i wouldnt have bought muiind, the wording and the analysis he used were all meant for the only way was to dispose assets of muiind.
Anyhow, slowly i put down hates, now really no more hate to calvintaneng, because i know more about investing and about sharing in this i3 forum, now i know it's my fault too.
Just, really reading comments from calvintaneng in here reminds me things that happened when muiind kept going down, telling this story just to remind you all here calvintaneng has the selling points but u bear the responsibility, the selling points are not 100% happen even the wording and analysis are meant for 100%, like what happened in muiind.

A witness for my disastrous stock: muiind promoted by calvintaneng
it's about 2years ago, i was new in share trading, i read articles by calvin promoting muiind. At that time he's so sure that the losing divorce case of kkp will force him release value of muiind for court settlement for his plaintiff ex-wife. calvin promoted so much even when share price up so much at around 25-28c, i bought in at 26.5c, even price went down to 20c and below, he kept insisting price would go up 2x, 3x, 4x, or even more than 10 times when assets being sold.
eventually price kept going down till 16c, nothing happened. i lost a lot of money.
Now, i saw the comments here and calvin insisting on price would be going sky rocketed, reminding me the same thing like muiind that really haunts me until now.

In 2025, the shareholders will have to decide to continue with iCAP as it is or to liquidate it. I believe, after 20 years of managing this fund, ttb will allow the shareholders to decide. Of course, these two choices have their proponents. Nearer the date, each group will galvanise to win their respective proposal.
Of course, the CL would like to restructure this fund, hoping to cash out at full or close to full value to NAV. How will ttb respond be? He has managed this fund for 20 years by 2025. By this time, he will be close to 70 years old. Will he be as focused on this fund, now that he seems to be very busy increasing his asset under management, the single factor which determines ensured high profitability for any fund managers. For the many who have supported ttb all this time, by 2025, many would have grown 20 years older too. Will they continue to support the extension of iCAP in its present form?
Many of the close-end funds in Malaysia and Singapore were liquidated for many reasons. For many, the returns were not fantastic. Also many traded at huge discount to their NAV. It was overall, frustrating for both the investors and the managers. Disgrunted investors with demotivated managers led to their liquidation, keeping the disgrunted investors happy. Of course, the funds specialising in severely discounted close end funds and catalysing their liquidation walk away with their big returns too.

I did show him how I valued this stock. :-)
Surprisingly the analyst from the investing brokers actually gave lower intrinsic value to TSH; thus I was a bit over-generous. However, I ask for a high margin of safety to protect against imprecision, bad luck or error in my analysis.

Might as well teach a crab how to walk straight and stop walking sideways
The crab can never understand lah

As I expected, rather than taking the bull by the horn and shines, he chooses his usual responses. Thanks for confirming what I already know about the hero of NETX, calvintan.
Just study his promotion in NETX and this is no different from all his other promotions. Hero of NETX, calvintan will tell you he that the price will go up. :-) Investing is so easy, like so. :-) :-)

Can I conclude that given calvintaneng's very very high intrinsic values for these 10 stocks, might he be in one of his high mood swings phase? Will need his friends or family members to look out for this, in case.
