THE competition for an urban mobility infrastructure project to serve the southern Johor region is set to intensify as telecommunications and technology company, Theta Edge Bhd (KL:THETA), has switched over to a rival consortium. This move strengthens the grouping consisting of LBS Bina Bhd (KL:LBS), Ancom Nylex Bhd (KL:ANCOMNY), Sinar Bina Infra Sdn Bhd and BTS Group Holdings pcl, according to some quarters.
The addition of Theta Edge is expected to allow the consortium to compete more effectively against a rival group made up of YTL Power International Bhd (KL:YTLPOWR), SIPP Rail Sdn Bhd, Mobilus Sdn Bhd and Lion Pacific Sdn Bhd.
Previously, the YTLP–SIPP–Mobilus–Lion Pacific consortium was perceived to have the upper hand as it had proposed an automated rapid transit (ART) system for the Greater Johor Bahru region that was “preferred” by the state government.

Water bills will go up by more than previously thought over the next five years, to fund higher costs and more investment, the BBC understands.
The regulator, Ofwat, is in the process of deciding how much customer bills will be allowed to rise.

You, a rube, might think that Nvidia is a big fat bubble, given that it’s worth almost as much as the entire UK stock market, trades at over 40 times next year’s forecasted earnings and even has its own earnings parties, spivvy support act and a monstrous options ecosystem.

Water companies are “laying the groundwork” to appeal against Ofwat’s decision to rein in how much they can increase customers’ bills, according to a leading credit rating agency.
Moody’s said in a report on the water industry that it expected the companies to take the water regulator’s final ruling on bill rises to the competition watchdog for reconsideration if expectations for returns on investment did not improve.
Companies in England and Wales requested to spend a total of £104.5bn by raising bills by £144 over the next five years in their submissions to Ofwat’s price review process, but in July the regulator provisionally only allowed them £88bn, capping the increases at £94.

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 26): Malaysia is now more selective in choosing foreign direct investment, with a focus on projects that would greatly benefit the country, especially in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and data technology, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said the opening of a data centre that used to depend on cheap energy and water to move and cool the operating system is now no longer sufficient.
"Now, if you want to [establish] a data centre, you must have AI,” he said, referring to projects like Nvidia's in Johor.

The sale performance of properties at Brabazon, a development by YTL in the UK, has shown significant progress and success since its inception.
Current Sales Performance
Completion and Occupancy: As of 2023, over 140 new homes have been completed in the Hangar District, with 35 new residents moving in this year alone. The first phase of construction is nearing completion, and more than half of the 300 properties in this phase have already been occupied.
Future Developments: The second phase of new homes is under construction, with the first units expected to be completed by 2025. This phase aims to enhance community living with features like shared gardens and public spaces.
Market Response: The Brabazon project has been well-received, achieving sales targets even during challenging market conditions, such as the pandemic. This success is attributed to effective marketing strategies and the establishment of a strong brand for the new development

Johor is the fastest growing market within Southeast Asia with over 1.6GW of Total Supply. The market has been the largest beneficiary of Singapore’s moratorium on data centres since 2019 and experienced exponential growth as it absorbed the spillover demand from regional tech companies and OTTs. To date, the market has evolved uniquely as a
build-to-suit market and there have been no signs of slowing down. Interest is diverting out of existing data centre clusters as international operators and CSP players start to land bank in anticipation of future demand.
Johor grew from a baseline of less than 10MW of Live Supply and the majority of growth in Total Supply occurred in the last three years after the announcement of the moratorium in Singapore. The current clusters are located in Sedenak
Tech Park, Nusajaya Tech Park, and YTLGreen Data Centre Park. Surrounding areas or regions offering land with power are beginning to see heightened interest as activities continue to intensify.

Electricity System Reforms. APAC markets, including mainland China, Malaysia, and Taiwan, have implemented significant reforms to their electricity systems. These reforms provide renewable-energy developers with new ways to sell power, including directly to companies, replacing traditional offtake mechanisms such as feed-in tariffs (the price renewables developers are paid for selling power to the grid) and grid-reliant power purchase agreements (PPAs). The reforms encourage innovation and flexibility and boost market efficiencies, thereby creating a more supportive environment for renewables developers.
Regional Power Trading. The growth in cross-border regional power trading is helping to encourage the development of renewable-energy projects. Recent initiatives include the expansion of a regional power grid serving members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). In addition, under a renewables pilot project, Singapore is importing up to 100 megawatts of hydropower from Laos via Malaysia and Thailand using existing grid infrastructure. Policymakers in the East ASEAN Growth Area (EAGA) are also developing a legal framework for renewable-energy certificates that promises to boost demand among companies in the EAGA.

Johor state’s data centre capacity has grown from just 10 megawatts (MW) at the start of 2021 to around 1.3 gigawatts (GW) currently, and that figure is expected to rise to 2.7GW by 2027, said Mr Lee.
