FASTER SELL FASTER RUN

Safety products company Safetyware Sdn Bhd managing director Wong Kee Wei said the present demand could not be met because China, which supplies more than half of the total face masks globally, was now facing a severe shortage themselves.

China, with its population of 1.4 billion, is now the No. 1 country for demand of face masks and its government has even prohibited manufacturers from exporting their products in order to prioritise local needs.

“The chain effect is, all the other countries which rely on China for mask supply, Malaysia included, are facing a serious shortage now, ” he said yesterday.

However, Wong said that there were very few local mask manufacturers in Malaysia, with only three major ones located in the Klang Valley, and their capacity was also limited.

“There’s NO WAY to fill the void no matter how much they ramp up their production, ” he said.

Wong said the demand for face masks surged by “easily a THOUSANDFOLD” due to people in China trying to procure face masks overseas via various means as a way to overcome the shortage there.

“The situation is further worsened by the panic sentiment of the public, where we see everyone going out in full force to buy masks for emergency standby purposes, ” said Wong.

Local face mask supplier Ritech Marketing manager Rosli Bidin said his company was also running low on face mask stock, with only 20 boxes of tie-on masks left, each box containing 50 sheets of face masks.

“By November 2003 — three months after the SARS concerns eased — the KLCI was up 19% from pre-SARS levels. The strongest performers were rubber gloves (+91-210%), technology (+47%), and property (+36%, thanks to the lower interest rates).

“Interestingly, rubber glove stock prices appreciated the most over the three months after concerns over SARS eased, as the positive impact of SARS on their financial performance became more apparent,” noted Credit Suisse.

Epidemiologists and infectious diseases experts have cautioned against irrational panic as the number of cases linked to the new coronavirus in China continues to rise. Some have even warned that the widespread scramble for face masks is unwarranted.

In fact, they cautioned that hoarding behavior by those who do not exhibit respiratory symptoms have sparked concerns in medical circles there could be a possible shortage of personal protective equipment in the coming weeks.

Coronavirus is less deadly than SARS — but that also explains why it’s so contagious

An effective virus can extend its reach by not killing its host too quickly and/or sustain a long incubation period like HIV

This is a very serious public health situation,” said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. “Moving forward, we can expect to see more cases, and more cases means more potential for person-to-person spread.”

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the “continued increase in cases and the evidence of human-to-human transmission outside of China are, of course, most deeply disturbing.” The illness produces a range of symptoms, with about 20% of the patients developing severe illnesses, including pneumonia and respiratory failure, he said.

“Although the numbers outside China are still relatively small, they hold the potential for a much larger outbreak,” Tedros said.

The number of confirmed cases is likely to grow, health officials said. There are more than 12,100 suspected cases in China that are either awaiting test results or haven’t been tested yet, on top of the 8,137 that have already been confirmed in the country, according to WHO and China state media data released Thursday. Although the coronavirus doesn’t appear to be as deadly as SARS, which had a mortality rate of about 11%, it is spreading significantly faster. The WHO data shows there are roughly 1,400 people in China who are severely ill.

Health officials in China, racing to try to contain a fast-growing coronavirus outbreak, are principally recording severe cases of disease, using a case definition that cannot capture patients with mild illness, according to experts familiar with the surveillance efforts.

The approach, the experts told STAT, is likely resulting in both an underestimate in the total number of cases and flawed assumptions about fatality rates calculated by those who ignore the repeated caution that it’s too soon to do that math.

The experts were quick to note that the Chinese are not willfully underreporting cases. Rather, the approach is a testament to how challenging data collection can be during the early days of an epidemic. When thousands of sick people show up at hospitals looking for care, there is no time to go searching for people who have mild symptoms and who have stayed home.

Sungai Buloh Hospital senior consultant physician (infectious disease) Dr Benedict Sim said this was because there were no local transmissions of the 2019-nCoV among Malaysians so far.

“However, this may change over time if the virus spread and there is human-to-human transmission.

“At the moment, donning a mask is only necessary if you are visiting China, which is the epicentre of the outbreak,” he said at the Health Ministry’s 2019-nCoV briefing here today.
