DiGi, Green Packet in talks on 4G tie-up?
DiGi.Com Bhd, the country's smallest mobile phone operator, is courting Green Packet Bhd for a potential tie-up that will allow the telco to widen its spectrum base and roll out 4G services by as early as next year.
Last month, DiGi, which is 49 per cent owned by Norway's Telenor ASA, tipped the market that it was on the prowl to acquire a 900 MHz spectrum.
Talk on the possibility of DiGi entering into RM1 billion deal to acquire Packet One Networks Sdn Bhd, which is 61 per cent owned by Green Packet, has excited the market.
Green Packet shares were snapped up yesterday on anticipation of the sale.
Packet One, the country's first WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) service provider, could inject between RM700 million and RM1 billion into the parent.
Early this year, Green Packet was open on the possibility of a sale, as the company doubled its efforts to cut cost, which led to more than 90 staff being laid off in March.
Business Times understands that talks between DiGi and Green Packet involve two possibilities - an outright sale of Packet One or a platform lease sharing deal.
"DiGi favours a platform-sharing arrangement as the RM700 million price tag for Packet One does not make sense, as Green Packet's market capitalisation is less than half of that," said a source.
Apart from Maxis Bhd and Celcom Axiata Bhd, four others that have spectrum of that magnitude are Asiaspace Sdn Bhd, Packet One, REDtone and YTL Communications.
DiGi's lack of fire power in terms of spectrum could see the company fall behind in the race to offer the best 4G services in Malaysia. As it is, Maxis and Celcom have teamed up with the likes of U Mobile, REDtone and Altel Communications Bhd in platform-sharing deals to roll out 4G services.
4G refers to mobile broadband services using next generation technologies such as LTE (Long Term Evolution) and WiMAX.

Shares of WiMAX operators rose on active trading yesterday amid speculation of a possible rise in merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in the telecommunications space, with DiGi.Com Bhd seen as possibly being on the hunt to buyout such companies.
StarBizWeek had reported over the weekend that large telco operator needs for wireless spectrum could become the basis for such M&A activity. The report quoted analysts who had speculated DiGi.Com Bhd could be looking at buying out WiMAX players primarily for their wireless spectrum.
Shares of Green Packet Bhd, the major owner of WiMAX operator Packet One Networks Sdn Bhd, rose the most, gaining by 7 sen or 21% to close at 40 sen, with 31 million shares traded.
The shares of REDtone International Bhd and YTL Power International Bhd, the owners of the other two WiMAX operators in the country, rose marginally by 1.2% and 3.13% respectively.
A dealer noted that he wasn’t surprised that Green Packet shares rose the most amid the M&A speculation, considering that the company had already declared some time ago its intention to seek possible “strategic alternatives”.
Last October, following press reports that Green Packet had received bids for its 61% stake in P1, Green Packet had confirmed that it was exploring strategic alternatives for P1 “including the possibility of merger, consolidation, to sell a stake and other options to maximise shareholders value.”
The report by StarBizWeek had highlighted that major telco’s such as Maxis and Celcom have been quick to ink collaboration deals with other recipients of the valuable 2600 MHz wireless spectrum band, leaving DiGi with the least amount of access to that spectrum.
DiGi also has only a fraction of the 900 MHz spectrum that both Celcom and Maxis have.

Malaysia’s FBMKLCI (1,723.80)
R2: 1,745
R1: 1,727
S1: 1,700
S2: 1,685
Prices traded in a tight range last week (bar Wednesday’s big
swing) following its sharp rebound off 1,660 low.
The rebound has stalled just below the second gap of 1,727-
1,745. With prices trading sideways and holding steady
above its 200-day SMA, we would not be surprised if the index tried
to move higher and fill up the said gap in the early part of the week.
Falling below the 200-day SMA should bring about another round
of selling with minor support seen at 1,685 and 1,653.

Borrowed more money form the Creditor???..Kinsteel has secured a loan to make the RM40m repayment for its Islamic bond that is due today from the bank that had subscribed to the bonds. This alleviates the steelmaker's financial distress and the threat of having its bonds downgraded to junk rating. The share placement exercise to raise RM29m to partly remunerate the RM40m bonds has yet to be finalised.
