Be careful of adenovirus vector vaccines....
2020-11-29 23:49 | Report Abuse
I have said it before and i will say it again. I do not fully trust Covid vaccines based on the Adenovirus vector vaccine platform such as Astrazeneca, Johnson and Johnson, Sputnik V vaccine and Cansino Vaccine for now due to extremely limited clinical experience and real world data. So far only 1 vaccine based on adenovirus vector platform has been approved for use in the market ie,. An ebola vaccine in 2017.
Unfortunately rare and long term side effects will generally only be picked up upon approval ie during the marketing phase when it is being used across large populations worldwide over a long period of time. Such rare and long term side effects have a lower chance of being detected during clinical trial phase due to controlled clinical setting, relatively smaller number of subjects and relatively short duration of followup.

Participant in India’s AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine trial sues after experiencing ‘severe adverse effect’
An Indian man who helped test a coronavirus jab based on AstraZeneca’s candidate vaccine has filed suit, claiming that he suffered extreme side effects during his participation in the trial.
The plaintiff, identified in media reports as a 40-year-old man from Chennai, is suing the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) for Rs 5 crore ($676,000 USD). The individual alleges that he suffered serious neurological damage after taking part in the phase three trial of Covishield, the SII’s version of the Covid-19 jab being developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. The man was purportedly told that the vaccine was safe and chose to participate in the program in “the spirit of public service.”
The lawsuit also demands that SII, AstraZeneca and the Oxford Vaccine Group immediately halt vaccine trials, in which some 1,600 volunteers are currently enrolled.
Ten days after receiving the shot, the man complained of a pounding headache and experienced vomiting, his wife told local media. He was bedridden and acting abnormally before being transferred to the emergency ward of the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Hospital. A review by the hospital concluded that the medical problems were not linked to the vaccine, and a medical official cited by Indian media claimed that the patient was “now alright” and had not incurred any expenses stemming from the health episode.
The man’s discharge summary said he requested to leave the hospital and was recovering from “acute encephalopathy”. He also suffered from deficiencies of Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D, and was suspected of having a “connective tissue disorder.”
However, the man’s wife insists that he has not fully recovered and is unable to work as before.
In September, SII briefly paused its clinical trials of Covishield after a recipient of the AstraZeneca jab showed adverse symptoms.

ASEAN diplomats acclaim Chinese vaccines
Diplomats from countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and representatives have acclaimed China's COVID-19 vaccines, expressing their confidence in promising results and expectations for further cooperation.
Malaysia's Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Lim Ban Hong has pinned his hopes on Chinese-developed vaccines for a vital accelerator to boost the regional economy, saying the vaccines will create a safer environment for a regional economic recovery across Southeast Asia.
Malaysia has been listed as one of the countries to be given priority to receive vaccines from China, for which Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin expressed his appreciation.
Indonesia has also closely worked with Chinese company Sinovac on co-developing an inactivated COVID-19 vaccine in the current Phase-III clinical trials involving more than 1,620 volunteers in Jakarta.
Indonesia feels confident of the safety and efficacy of China's vaccines, Dino Kusnadi, the Indonesian Embassy's deputy chief of mission, told the media at a sideline seminar on China-ASEAN medical cooperation held during the EXPO.
Indonesia has sought emergency authorization to start a mass vaccination campaign by the end of the year, Reuters reported in mid-November. If approved for general use, the Sinovac vaccines would be produced domestically by Indonesia's state-owned pharmaceutical firm PT Bio Farma, the Bangkok Post reported.

No significant change to reject budget at committee level: Dr M
FORMER Prime Minister (PM) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said no significant change can be achieved if the proposed Budget 2021 is rejected at the committee level debate session.
“Rejecting the budget at the committee level, as it is said to be done, will not bring any significant impact on the government nor the proposed budget.
“It is just an attempt to divert the criticisms of the people who are disappointed with the attitude of the Opposition,” Dr Mahathir said in a statement today.

PM: No call to reject 2021 Budget just to bring about polls
"There is no need to do that (reject the 2021 Budget). If you ask me, I could have yesterday advised the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, to dissolve Parliament so that a general election can be held.
"But we all know that the problem is Covid-19. InsyaAllah, if He allows it, when the pandemic is over, we can hold a general election.
Muhyiddin added that the 2021 Budget, worth RM322.5 billion which was passed at the policy level in Parliament on Thursday, is aimed at easing the burden of the people and restoring the country's economy.
"I hope the 2021 Budget will be approved at the Dewan Rakyat and subsequently at the Dewan Negara. This is to ensure that the people will receive the assistance that they need during this tough time."

Is health ministry prepared for Covid-19 vaccine’s storage, logistical needs?
While commending the government for its Covid-19 vaccine purchase agreement with Pfizer yesterday, a think tank believes that the allocation under Budget 2021 for the health ministry should be reviewed, especially with regard to the vaccines’ logistical and storage requirements.
According to Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy chief executive officer Azrul Mohd Khalib, the Covid-19 vaccines would require ultra-cold storage of -70°C, which is something beyond the capability of most existing primary healthcare facilities in the country.
“We need to ensure that the health ministry gets the necessary funds and manpower needed to hit the ground running when the vaccines become available in 2021, especially since they have specific logistical and storage requirements which will require investing in the necessary infrastructure and training.
“Are we going to acquire Pfizer’s special ice-boxes? Have we allocated for the record-keeping system that will be needed? As it stands, we do not believe that the existing allocations are adequate for this purpose,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Azrul, meanwhile, also expects challenges in the Covid-19 vaccine delivery process to rural areas due to limitations and pragmatic concerns.

A Chinese delegation visits Casablanca to discuss Sinopharm vaccine manufacturing in Morocco
Just a few weeks before the launch of the large-scale vaccination campaign in Morocco, a Chinese delegation visited Casablanca, where a first batch of vaccines was delivered, according to media reports.
A shipment of one million doses of the vaccine from the Sinopharm laboratory arrived in Casablanca where Moroccan officials welcomed representatives from the Chinese laboratory, Assabah Daily in Arabic reported.
This visit takes place within the framework of the partnership and cooperation agreements signed with Sinopharm, a partnership which ultimately aims to manufacture and distribute the vaccine on the African continent.
Morocco has ordered 10 million doses of the vaccine from Sinopharm CNBG, which will initially enable the immunization of 5 million people. Priority will be given to health professionals, security forces, teachers, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
The vaccination campaign will subsequently be extended and should reach 80% of the population, or 25 million Moroccans over the age of 18. This massive vaccination should take place in several stages which will all be carried out in less than three months.
