Maybank IB Research said geopolitical supply risks, such as instability in the Middle East and unrest in Venezuela, could trigger volatility in the oil market, leading to oil price potentially overshooting above US$80 per barrel and put the sector back in the limelight in the interim.

“We do not rule out oil price sustaining at current levels on improving fundamentals, aside from geopolitical supply risk. Global net crude supply is narrowing, while global crude oil inventories are falling and offshore storage is on the downtrend,” the research house said.

“These events have trumped the potential impact of increased shale supply. While the collective Opec and non-Opec (notably Russia) pact to tighten oil output, and continuously complying to the pact has been key to the recovery in oil price since November 2016, recent geopolitical supply risks could further induce volatility, leading to oil price overshooting above US$80 per barrel.”

MaybankIB Research said May will be an important month as the US will decide on re-imposing sanctions on Iran.

It noted also that Venezuela will be a risk following Chevron’s decision to evacuate its workers there after some of its staff was imprisoned over a dispute with the government.

“This may trigger other oil companies operating there to pull out their investments. Both Iran (3.8 million barrels per day [bpd]) and Venezuela (1.5 million bpd) are Opec members and collectively produce 5.3 million bpd of oil, accounting for 5% of global output,” it said.

MaybankIB Research said that a rise in oil price could excite the equity market, from a top-down perspective, across the board.
