@sslee
Thanks so much for putting this into context, totally can compare what we got and what the Taiwanese navy got
About the same size, ours 4 times more expensive, with machine guns….

You at least got this right, China got 9 billion to improve their education system while in exchange we got boats with machine guns
We might use them for fishing though, but considering the Chinese navy blockade 100km of Sarawak’s coast, can’t do that too

For a close to ‘apple to apple’s comparison, recently the Taiwanese navy commissioned their latest ship that’s close to the size of the sampan’s we are given,
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuo_Chiang-class_corvette
Equipped with 8 × Hsiung Feng II
8 × Hsiung Feng III
1 × Otobreda 76 mm
1 × Phalanx CIWS
2 × 12.7mm Browning M2HB
2 × Mark 32 triple torpedo launcher (one port and one starboard
For about rm 200-250 mil each

The second batch of KDX-III ships mentioned above will give the RoKN six ships of this class by the late 2020s. They will be 170 meters long and displace about 8,100 tons. Kim said that these new ships will be capable of sea-based ballistic missile defense, with plans to acquire the SM-3 or SM-6 interceptors and Aegis CMS Baseline 9.
“This will contribute to realize a multi-layered missile defense capabilities at [the] Korean Peninsula; along with existing land-based interceptors of both Korean armed forces and U.S. troops in Korea, like Patriot [surface-to-air missile] and [Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system],” he added.
