Airlines in Philippines seek extension on airport fees waiver

MANILA : AirAsia Philippines chief executive officer Ricardo Isla said they were preparing to ask the government to extend the waiver on airport fees and office rentals as the aviation sector’s recovery had stalled due to the contagious Delta variant.

Isla, who also represents the country’s major airlines as chair of the Air Carriers Association of the Philippines, said they would make the request to the relevant government agencies in a meeting next week.

“That alone would be a big help to the airline companies,” Isla told reporters during an AirAsia Philippines briefing on Wednesday.

Local carriers were forced to stop accepting passengers traveling for leisure purposes until Aug. 20 after the government ordered stricter quarantine rules in Metro Manila and key hubs around the country due to rising Covid-19 infections.

Isla said AirAsia Philippines alone had cancelled about 40 per cent of its flights during this period, hurting ongoing efforts to generate revenue.

“If not for Delta, we could have implemented four roundtrips a day to Boracay,” Isla said.

The reduction of regulatory fees, alongside efforts to boost cargo revenues, would help them weather the loss of crucial passenger traffic, he explained.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines earlier waived fees for flights and parking under the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act, which expired in end-June.

AirAsia Philippines is also taking a more cautious approach to reopening hubs and Isla said they wanted to see more widespread vaccinations against Covid-19.

AirAsia Philippines said about 70 per cent of its employees were inoculated against Covid-19 and the budget carrier was targeting to fully vaccinate its workforce by the end of the year, AirAsia Philippines spokesperson Steve Dailisan said.

This was also meant to ease concerns of travellers with about 90 per cent of passengers agreeing that a fully vaccinated flight crew would boost their confidence in flying, according to an AirAsia Philippines survey conducted last month.

“We are very pleased that our efforts of inoculating the whole AirAsia Philippines organisation has gained the confidence among guests to travel again,” Dailisan said.

He also explained the carrier was currently developing a mobile app that would act as a vaccine passport. This would also help with Covid-19 testing verification given the proliferation of fake reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction test results, Dailisan said.

Towards this end, BIEH is taking deliberate steps to manage the uncertain outlook to strengthen its resilience and ensure long-term sustainability, according to Serba Dinamik Holdings Bhd group managing director/CEO Datuk Dr Mohd Abdul Karim Abdullah.

“Although we are facing COVID-19 challenges, our operations remain intact and running with 100% capacity with strict adherence to COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) as instructed by the authorities,” he told FocusM.

BIEH is a 30-acre development in Tanjung Kidurong, Bintulu (Sarawak) which will house the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) and inspection, repair and maintenance (IRM) centre of excellence.

It is targeted to become a central facility that will provide a multitude of MRO, and multi-disciplinary EPCC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning) services.

The hub is also equipped with cutting edge technology such as high-speed balancing machine, computer numerical control horizontal and vertical milling centre, electrical discharge wire cutting machine, high precision coordinate measuring machine as well as other cutting-edge technologies which will be the first in Asia.

BIEH is able to provide a full range of maintenance and repair services to meet the needs of the oil & gas (O&G) industry as well as power generation for the following companies operating in Bintulu:

ASEAN Bintulu Fertilizer (PETRONAS)
Malaysia Liquefied Natural Gas (PETRONAS)
Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis
PTTEP (formerly Murphy Oil)
Bintulu Integrated Facility (PETRONAS)
The centre currently host MRO workshops, blasting, coating and galvanisation areas and plants, fabrication and laydown areas, warehouses and storage facilities. Other facilities include office buildings, car parks, power substation, a wastewater treatment facility and training centres.

“BIEH currently has a workforce of 1,239 working on rotational basis,” Abdul Karim pointed out. “In 1H 2021, BEIH has received more than RM640 mil worth of contracts which can last until 2023.”

The contracts are from various clients namely Shell, PETRONAS, Samalaju Port, ABP (Australia’s leading supplier high quality essential oils and vegetable oils), Nippon Oil and other big names in various fields.

Touching on job prospects, Abdul Karim expects an additional RM1 bil of income stream to be secured from reputable international companies which will support Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth for 2022.

Elsewhere, Serba Dinamik has also played an active role in corporate social responsibility (CSR), benefitting the frontliners in Bintulu. On June 30, the company made a donation of five washer machines, three water dispensers, and food supplies to the Bintulu Hospital.

The above donation is primarily intended to provide necessity at five quarantine and low-risk treatment centres (PKRC) in Bintulu as well as to assist COVID-19 patients.

At the close of today’s trading, Serba Dinamik was down 1.5 sen or 3.8% to 38 sen with 89.14 million shares traded, thus valuing the company at RM1.42 bil. – Aug 2, 2021

Joe, just adding to your point. Safe investing is predicting the future and prepare for it. What is the multiple outcome of this pandemic? And how you prepare for it?

The future of AirAsia boils down to one question: Can AirAsia survive covid? And think of what you want to do in each scenario, and the risk-reward.

On a side note. Why is AirAsia diversifying so heavily now? There is always a chance (although very low) covid will lock us down for the next few years. So what can the management do to survive?
