Saifuddin: Implement hudud in Terengganu

In response to Umno’s cheering on of PAS to implement hudud law in Kelantan, PKR has urged Umno to watch its own house by implementing hudud law in Terengganu.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution said this in response to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Islamic affairs Jamil Khir Baharom, who declared his support for PAS to table a private member’s bill in Parliament to remove federal obstacles to hudud law.

Doc: It is important that the full contents of the black box is made public so that the family members of the victims on board that flight along with the international community that helped provide assistance to find the black box and those individuals all over the world that expressed their concerns about MH 370, will be able to find out what happened that lead to the downing of that jet.

My concern is if the black box is given the Malaysian government to analyse, they may goof it up just like they have consistently goofed up on every part of this missing MH370 ordeal right from failing to act when the flight disappeared from radar, and not act when the military radar detected the jet had changed flight direction and giving the infamous confusing and conflicting press statements on SAR plans.

Changenow: In all fairness to all foreign passengers, the box should be handed to an international tribunal. Even if Malaysia takes custody and reveals its contents, nobody will believe it due to past inefficiencies.

Is the truth just owned by the BN/Umno government? What is the government trying to do, hide the truth?

Ksn: Does it matter as to who owns the black box from MH370? What Malaysians and in fact the whole world wants to know is the truth in the contents of the black box. Why is our government. sending the AG to discuss the ownership? Has our government anything to hide if the contents are made known to the world, the truth? I wonder.

Real Truth: Why physically go to UK? We can write or email to request or use the diplomatic channels, if one wants to know who has the right of possession. One can use all the resources which is available online to study maritime laws and international laws. Do not waste the rakyat's money at your whim.

Unless Malaysia has something to hide, why bother who gets the black box. Is there something that can implicate Malaysia? Even if Malaysia has the right to the black box, we do not have the technology to read what is inside the box. Only the manufacturer would have the capability to analyse the black box.

Why the haste is securing the black box, it may take two or three years to retrieve from the ocean floor.

One wonders the haste in which the Malaysian government is trying to secure the black box. Malaysians remember the same AG went to Uruguay to retrieve the jet engines that were allegedly stolen by an army man not too long ago, and we have no news about the army personnel and the jet engine. We hope the same thing does not repeat here.

Hearty Malaysian: Find the black box and let the international experts check it instead of returning to it to MAS . Why the hurry to rush to UK, are we still their colony or has the Malaysian government has something to hide, hence they insist the black box must be returned?

Mytwosensworth: Whatever the international law may be with regards to its ownership, in all fairness, its content belongs to all the MH370 passengers' next of kin. It must be opened and its content deciphered in the presence of all nations who had its citizens on that ill-fated flight.

After all, justice must not only be done, but also seen to be done.

Airliner crisis compounds Malaysian government’s woes

Malaysia's missing-plane crisis has exposed the shortcomings of a ruling regime already wrestling with a rapidly shrinking support base, fierce racial divisions and international criticism of its tough handling of political opponents.

The same government has ruled since Malaysia's birth in 1957, and political observers said its much-criticised response to the jet drama is symptomatic of years of institutional atrophy under an ethnic Malay elite known for cronyism.

Analysts said rancour over the still-unexplained disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 and its 239 people, two-thirds of whom were Chinese, could also complicate plans to draw closer to China – Malaysia's biggest trading partner and a growing source of tourist revenue.

"The general level of Malaysian political performance, competence and adequacy has plummeted," said Clive Kessler, a Malaysia politics researcher at the University of New South Wales, who cites a "long, slow, protracted crisis of governance" over the past decade.

Experts stress that any country would struggle to cope with the plane's baffling disappearance on March 8, and Malaysia denies mishandling it.

But allegations of incompetence and evasiveness have clearly unsettled the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

BN is unused to being challenged by Malaysia's meek, state-dominated press and has basked in decades of admiration of Malaysia as an economically successful melting pot, despite longstanding criticism over policies that discriminate against non-Malay minorities.

But ashen-faced officials have been subjected to daily grillings by combative foreign media in daily briefings in sometimes tense scenes beamed live in Malaysia and around the world.

"This is not a good look for Malaysia. I do think that the Barisan government has done some serious damage to its international reputation," said Michael Barr, an Asian politics expert at Australia's Flinders University.

The affair also has trained attention on BN's bruising political tactics, particularly its treatment of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar, who accuses the government of hurling false criminal charges against him in a bid to halt the stunning recent successes of his opposition alliance, was convicted of sodomy and sentenced to five years in jail just hours before MH370 took off.

The verdict, denounced by rights groups and questioned by Washington, was dragged into the MH370 media glare after it was revealed that the flight's captain, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, was a member of Anwar's political party.

"With an international audience watching, this is showing that what (Malaysia's government) thinks is acceptable here, is not at all tolerable by international standards," said Bridget Welsh, a Malaysia politics analyst at Singapore Management University.

BN is routinely rapped by anti-graft groups for widespread corruption and cronyism – Defence and acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, the government's face on MH370, is the cousin of Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Even China's opaque Communist Party leadership has criticised Malaysia's perceived lack of transparency, while Chinese relatives of passengers angrily allege a cover-up.

Pragmatic Beijing is unlikely to upset mutually beneficial trade links, but the plane drama will certainly cause economic worry in Malaysia, said Welsh.

Exports to China have become critical to maintaining the growth BN banks on for support.

Bilateral trade has soared – up 11.8% in 2013 to US$106 billion (RM350.7 billion), according to Chinese figures. Najib and China's President Xi Jinping last year pledged still-cosier ties and targeted US$160 billion in trade by 2017.

The flow of Chinese tourists to Malaysia also has accelerated, hitting 1.8 million in 2013, up 15% year–on–year, behind only Singaporean and Indonesian visitors.

"This will require a significant effort to rebuild Malaysia's credibility abroad," Welsh said of the potential economic impact.

"Once you lose it, it takes time to win back."

The crisis comes at a bad time for the mild-mannered Najib, who launched a reform drive three years ago in a failed bid to shore up voter support. That has been abandoned under pressure from conservatives in his ruling party, and Najib appears weakened.

Malaysian voters have deserted BN at an accelerating pace over corruption, rule of law concerns, and a sense of drift.

Anwar's opposition won more votes than BN in May 2013 elections but the ruling coalition retained parliament thanks to seat allocations that favour its rural Malay base.

In particular, Malaysia's sizable Chinese community – whose industriousness is a critical component of growth – increasingly chafe under a decades-old system of preferences for Malays.

PETALING JAYA: It is not that Malaysia has not made any effort in the fight against corruption and cronyism. The trouble is that the fight does not seem to be making any headway.

Why is the eradication of corruption and cronyism a constant struggle for Malaysia? One answer lies in the lack of political will.

So the nation is still in the doldrums on the cronyism scale as evident from a recent report in The Economist

According to The Economist Crony Capitalism Index 2014, Malaysia came in third place for cronyism and toppling its list was Hong Kong while Russia was at number two.

The UK-based Economist reported that all three countries were in the same positions since the last study in 2007 while most countries in the Southeast Asian region including Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, fared worse in 2014.

Singapore was ranked at fifth place, the Philippines at sixth, Indonesia 10th while Thailand took the 16th spot.

Former Transparency International Malaysia president Tan Sri Dr Ramon Navaratnam described Malaysia’s position as “very surprising and disappointing”.

“I did not realise we are that bad. The Economist is a reputable publication and we cannot dismiss these findings,” he told theantdaily.

“The government should seriously examine this report, find out where cronyism is taking place and take action.

“Corruption is related to cronyism which is bad. All these can be mitigated by the findings as the long-term sustainability of Malaysia’s economic development can be seriously jeopardised by cronyism and corruption,” he warned.

Navaratnam also said that “money politics” was the mother of all problems and those in power must have the political will to fight the scourge.

The Economist further reported that the uncontrolled habit of rent-seeking this century allows billionaires that are politically well connected to double their wealth and this posed a threat to the free market.

Poser over flammable batteries in MH370's cargo

The spotlight has once again fallen on the cargo of the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 after authorities today confirmed the aircraft was carrying lithium-ion batteries which can be highly flammable.

The confirmation by MAS chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya today comes just four days after he denied the aircraft was carrying any hazardous goods and instead highlighted the "three to four tonnes of mangosteen" on the plane.

"We carried some lithium-ion small batteries, they are not big batteries and they are basically approved under the ICAO (The International Civil Aviation Organisation) under dangerous goods.

"It (lithium-ion battery) is not dangerous goods per se but in terms (of) they are (being) declared as dangerous goods under ICAO," he told a daily briefing on the search of MH370 at Sama-Sama Hotel, KL International Airport.

Jauhari insisted the lithium-ion battery cargo was checked “several times” to ensure it was packed in accordance with ICAO guidelines.

“Airlines do that all the time, it is not just Malaysia Airlines. These goods are being flown by many airlines as cargo anyway, (which) is based on ICAO’s ruling,” he added.

According to the US-based Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a total of 141 air incidents involving batteries carried as cargo or baggage were recorded between March 20, 1991 until Feb 17 this year.

‘Battery fires caused crashes before’

In rare cases, entire aircraft have been destroyed as a result of fires started from lithium-ion batteries, with the most recent cases being Asiana Airlines Flight 991 and UPS Airlines Flight 6, though both incidences involved cargo aircraft.

In the case of UPS Airlines Flight 6 which took off from Dubai to Cologne, Germany, it crashed after attempting an emergency landing at Dubai International Airport on Sept 3, 2010, killing the crew members.

The United Arab Emirates’ General Civil Aviation Authority, in a 322-page report of the incident published in 2013, concluded that the crash was linked to fire started by lithium-ion batteries in the cargo.

The report said the pilot had to leave his seat in search for portable oxygen on the smoke-filled flight deck after which the Boeing 747-400F lost communication.

“It is possible that a lithium-type battery or batteries, for reasons which cannot be established, went into an energetic failure characterised by thermal runaway and auto ignited, starting a chain reaction which spread to the available combustible material,” the report said.

Following such concerns, the ICAO last year imposed a new rule requiring any shipment containing more than two lithium-ion batteries to comply with a detailed hazardous goods requirement.

‘Possibility overlooked’

The possibility of fire as a result of lithium-ion batteries that led to the loss of Flight MH370 was first raised by CNN on Mach 14, but little attention was paid to it as authorities declined to reveal the content of the plane’s cargo.

Flight MH370 on the KL-Beijing route lost communication with traffic control on March 8 at 1.30am over the Gulf of Thailand.

The plane’s loss triggered a massive search in the South China Sea, but it was revealed by military data that the plane had made a turn-back and flew into the vast unknown.

Investigators have established that the aircraft’s last-known location to be somewhere between the borders of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to the northern Thai border, or from Indonesia to the southern Indian Ocean.

However, after 14 days of a multinational search involving 26 countries, the plane had yet to be found.

What is so offensive about a picture of Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail crying?

That was the question Kedah PKR vice-chairman Gooi Hsiao Leung is asking after the banner, which also contained the words “You’ll never walk alone” with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the background, was taken down by the Election Commission (EC) enforcement officers here this evening.

The banner was among 30, including 3 other billboards, that were removed during the operation.

This led to a one-hour shouting match with 20 PKR party workers, who attempted to prevent the officers from removing the banners.

Unfortunately, the party only managed to salvage one banner.

Gooi, who was at the scene when the banners were being taken down, was informed by the EC enforcers that they were acting on complaints by the Barisan Nasional (BN) that the materials were “offensive”.

The officers, however, could not give a proper explanation although they said election regulations stipulate materials containing seditious elements, false statements and personal attacks on rivals were prohibited.

Gooi said none of these elements were present in the banner showing Wan Azizah and her husband.

“It depicts a loving wife, who is supporting her hubby, while the phrase means that she will always be by his side,” he told reporters when met this evening.

The Alor Star Member of Parliament also questioned why the EC was so “efficient” in removing the banners, a majority of which were erected last night, while no action was taken against banners deemed offensive by the opposition.

Gooi felt that the EC was not being fair or bipartisan by acting in such an arbitrary manner. He also said that the party was not informed by the electoral body of its actions although Gooi said this was a “must”.

“I do hope they will be fair and impartial,” he said, adding that the party had lodged a complaint against EC.

When contacted, EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said according to election guidelines, posters can only contain pictures of the candidates.

Banners with logos of component parties, which are not those of the candidate, were also not allowed.

“Election enforcement teams also comprise representatives from the party contesting and they would have to discuss before taking any action.”

MMA demands probe into assault of doctor

Raising an alarm that hospitals are no longer a safe place to work in, the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) demanded today that the authorities investigate the beating up of a junior doctor at the Malacca Hospital by an army officer.

The doctor suffered severe facial and eye injuries, along with suspected fracture of the jaw, in the beating he received on Tuesday night. MMA said it was shocked by the lack of security to protect hospital staff at the hospital.
