KUALA LUMPUR: AMMB Holdings Bhd (AmBank Group) expects to shed at least 11% or 1,200 of its current 11,000 employees under the mutual separation scheme (MSS) that it recently launched to cut cost and improve efficiency, analysts say.
The group will likely incur a one-off cost of about RM100 million from the MSS, which will be reflected in its current financial year ending March 31, 2018 (FY18), Maybank Investment Bank (IB) Research said in a note to clients yesterday.

However, the exercise will then result in cost savings, which is expected to boost the group’s net profit from FY19.

HONG KONG (Nikkei Markets) -- Asian stocks outside of Japan skidded on Thursday, as Washington's proposal to tax imports from China at more than twice the rate indicated earlier and the U.S. Federal Reserve's signal for more interest rate increases weighed on investor sentiment.

U.S. authorities on Wednesday said they could propose a 25% tariff on $200 billion worth of imports from China, up for a 10% levy proposed last month. The developments come weeks after Washington and Beijing imposed punitive trade tariffs on goods worth $34 billion imported from each other.

Separately, the U.S. central bank kept interest rates unchanged at its policy review that concluded Wednesday, but said that a further gradual increase in rates will be consistent with conditions in the world's largest economy. The Fed will review policy in September again.
