BYD faces tax investigations in India

According to a report by Reuters Wednesday, leading Chinese automaker, BYD (SZ:002594), is currently facing an investigation by India's Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) due to accusations of underpaid taxes on imported parts used in their assembled cars sold within India.

China's Evergrande Property applies to resume trading on Hong Kong exchange

(Reuters) - Evergrande Property Services Group Ltd said on Wednesday it had applied to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange to resume trading of the company's shares from Aug. 3.

Shares of the company, the property services unit of China Evergrande Group, have been suspended from trading since March 21, 2022, after being sucked into a debt crisis in mid-2021 that had hit multiple Chinese property developers.

The company posted its long-overdue financial results in June this year, reporting a 46.4% plunge in its fiscal 2022 profit when compared with fiscal 2020.

The property services unit said it has sufficient assets for its business operations and expects to maintain a growth level of revenue and net profit comparable to that of property service industry leaders.

Foxconn to Invest $194 Million in New Plant in India's Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI (Reuters) -Taiwan's Foxconn has signed a deal with Tamil Nadu to invest 16 billion rupees ($194 million) in a new electronic components manufacturing facility that will create 6,000 jobs, the government of the southern Indian state said on Monday.

The Foxconn Industrial Internet (FII) facility will be built in the Kancheepuram district near the state capital of Chennai, a state government source said on condition of anonymity as details are not yet public.

It will be separate from the sprawling campus near Chennai where Foxconn assembles Apple's iPhones, they added.

"This is a major achievement for the state," Tamil Nadu Minister for Industries TRB Rajaa said in a statement, after Foxconn Chairman Young Liu and other representatives met with state officials including its chief minister.

Liu told reporters in Tamil Nadu that Foxconn currently employs about 40,000 workers in its facility near Chennai.

Foxconn has plans to quadruple the workforce at its Tamil Nadu iPhone factory by late 2024 to spread its bets beyond China, Reuters reported last year.

Liu has been in India to attend the federal government's semiconductor conference that ended on Sunday.

Foxconn on Monday also signed a research and innovation agreement with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and the state government's investment arm Guidance.

The partnership aims to bring more high-value tech to the state via Foxconn, the unnamed source said. "Tamil Nadu wants to move up the value chain in electronics," they added.

Reuters reported last week that the Foxconn subsidiary was in talks with Tamil Nadu about the components investment, with the company aiming for the plant's completion in 2024.

FII makes electronic devices, cloud service equipment and industrial robots. It was not immediately clear if the new plant would make components for iPhones or for other firms, or both.

Three members of an Indian sports team set to compete at the World University Games this week in China were denied regular visas — which are stamped onto passports — by the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi.

Instead, they got their visas stapled to a page in their passports. For India, that presents a problem because if it sends athletes with stapled visas to China, it would imply accepting China’s claim on the territory.

A lot of people describe to me that they actually came across this by accident. A lot of people describe to me, for example, they just one day saw a video describing how to go to America on their Douyin feed; Douyin’s the Chinese counterpart of TikTok. And then some of the people didn’t understand what was that about, so they did some research – and because of the algorithm, you just keep getting more videos of a similar content. That’s how everything started for many of the people we spoke to.

I find that really surprising, given that we know that China has a lot of control over its Internet content there. And the fact that this would be even available in China, I guess it speaks to something about China’s efforts to try to keep a lock on what the Chinese people know about issues like this.

That’s a great point. One thing we actually found out watching all this Douyin videos is a lot of the daily users, they kind of package this not into like “how do we flee to America” or “how do we migrate to America” – they actually kind of use hashtags such as “international traveling” or like “trekking through the rainforest.” It’s almost like a vacation you’re taking instead of a very dangerous journey you’re taking.

Very interesting. And this prevents authorities from checking what it is that they’re searching for, that kind of thing?

We don’t know that for sure, but people we spoke to said this is kind of a clever way for them to supplement around censorship. One thing that we also found out about kind of the information that this migrant would learn from the Internet is a lot of kind of mixed information, a lot of false information. And a lot of them read this from platforms like Douyin or YouTube. And also just to your point, for example, one of the Internet Douyin influencers – his name is Baozai – his original account posting very detailed information about how to come to America in this way was blocked by Douyin and by other online social media platforms.

Meanwhile, during a state dinner on Thursday, PM Modi and US President Joe Biden hailed a new era in their countries’ relationship. “Two great nations, two great friends, and two great powers. Cheers,” Biden told Modi in a toast at the state dinner. “You are soft spoken, but when it comes to action, you are very strong,” PM Modi replied.
