Germany sees 'worrying jump' in coronavirus cases

BERLIN: Germany is experiencing a "worrying jump" in coronavirus cases, Health Minister Jens Spahn said Thursday, as the number of new daily infections soared past 4,000 for the first time since early April.

Lothar Wieler, the head of Germany's Robert Koch Institute for disease control, warned the country could see an uncontrollable spread of the virus.

Europe's biggest economy recorded 4,058 new Covid-19 infections over the last 24 hours, a stark increase on Wednesday's figure of 2,828, according to the RKI.


"Barely any other country in Europe has managed the crisis as well so far," he said. "But we must not gamble away what we've achieved."



"We don't know how the situation in Germany will develop in the coming weeks," RKI head Wieler told the same press conference.

"It's possible that we will reach more than 10,000 cases a day. It's possible that the virus will spread uncontrollably. But I hope it doesn't."

The alarming jump in cases came with autumn school holidays under way or starting across Germany,prompting calls from Chancellor Angela Merkel's government for citizens to avoid travel abroad during the usually busy period for tourism.








The RKI's Wieler said infection numbers were rising nationwide, with experts seeing larger outbreaks as well as "lots of smaller outbreaks in many parts of Germany".

The World Health Organization on Tuesday said a vaccine for the disease caused by the new coronavirus could come as late as the end of 2021, dampening hopes from the group’s earlier prediction that it may be available by the middle of next year.

WHO Western Pacific regional coordinator Socorro Escalante said that going by the target date of COVAX, a WHO-led global scheme for fair distribution of future vaccines against Covid-19, a widespread and affordable vaccine would not be available in the market for more than a year.

“When we are looking at the target of COVAX, it’s by the end of 2021 that they are trying to come up with the first 2 billion doses that will be allocated to all countries who are participating,” Escalante said, based on the current progress of vaccine trials under the scheme.

LONDON (Oct 6): Rich countries could be back to close to normal by late 2021, "if a Covid-19 vaccine works", is ready soon and distributed properly at scale, Microsoft founder Bill Gates (pictured) said on Tuesday.

"By late next year, you can have things going back pretty close to normal — that's the best case," Gates, 64, told The Wall Street Journal CEO Council.

"We still don't know whether these vaccines will succeed," Gates said.

Covid-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer/BioNTech and AstraZeneca/Oxford University are two of the leading candidates in the race to be first to get regulatory approval in the West.


The head of the World Health Organization said on Tuesday that a vaccine against Covid-19 may be ready by the end of the year.


"We're also talking with Russia and China," Gates said. "None of their vaccines are in a Phase III trial with a highly regarded regulator overseeing that trial."

"The Western companies are further ahead on doing these Phase III studies and so, if those come out well and they're offered at low cost, I doubt there'll be a lot of Russian or Chinese vaccines going outside of those countries," he said.

LONDON (Oct 6): Rich countries could be back to close to normal by late 2021, "if a Covid-19 vaccine works", is ready soon and distributed properly at scale, Microsoft founder Bill Gates (pictured) said on Tuesday.

"By late next year, you can have things going back pretty close to normal — that's the best case," Gates, 64, told The Wall Street Journal CEO Council.

"We still don't know whether these vaccines will succeed," Gates said.

Covid-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer/BioNTech and AstraZeneca/Oxford University are two of the leading candidates in the race to be first to get regulatory approval in the West.


The head of the World Health Organization said on Tuesday that a vaccine against Covid-19 may be ready by the end of the year.


"We're also talking with Russia and China," Gates said. "None of their vaccines are in a Phase III trial with a highly regarded regulator overseeing that trial."

"The Western companies are further ahead on doing these Phase III studies and so, if those come out well and they're offered at low cost, I doubt there'll be a lot of Russian or Chinese vaccines going outside of those countries," he said.
