On Oct 28, 2013, Patimas had submitted an application for extension of time to submit its regularisation plan but this was rejected by Bursa Malaysia.

The reasons for the rejection are not clear but one view is that the exchange was not convinced that Patimas had in fact any substantial plan to take it out of its doldrums. Hence, as it stands now, Patimas shares will be suspended on Nov 27, and subsequently delisted on Nov 29.

Swedish aerospace and defence company, Saab International Malaysia Sdn Bhd, is keen to establish smart partnerships with local companies to venture into areas such as radar and weaponary.

Its managing director, Thomas Linden, said the company was also keen on technological tranfer.

"We have been here (Malaysia) since 1970. Our strategies are to help South-East Asia countries, like Malaysia, improve defence capabilities and move to next level," he told reporters after a briefing session at Malaysia's National Defence University in Kuala Lumpur today.

Linden said its smart partnership with DRB Hicom involved working together to develop military sytems for the Malaysian Armed Forces.

"We have a long history with Malaysia's defence industry players ... we supply a lot of sophisticated technologies to Malaysia's air force and navy," he said.

On Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's decision to postpone buying new Multi-Role Combat Aircraft, Linden said he was optimistic of winning the deal once the government decided to continue with the purchase.-- Bernama

MQ Technology plans to capture as much as possible of the aviation-components market available in South-East Asia, which is estimated to be worth RM3bil a year, according to Tan.

The AS9000 standard, developed by US aerospace prime contractors, standardises and streamlines many of the other aerospace quality management standards.

The AS9000 standard is based on ISO 9000, with 27 additional requirements unique to the aerospace industry.

MQ Technology also signed a collaboration agreement with READ Co Ltd Japan on Sept 5 to produce chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) pad conditioners for the semiconductor wafer market.

Tan said CMP pads are used for smoothening the surface of semiconductor wafers, which are now 200mm and 300mm in diameter.

“The semiconductor wafers are now becoming larger to reduce the cost of production.

“The larger the wafers are, the more CMP pads will be needed to polish the surface,” Tan added.

The global market size of the CMP pad conditioner market is about RM800mil currently, and is expected grow between 7% to 12% yearly, according to Tan.

“Our CMP pads will be branded as Microread and are expected to be launched in the market early next year.

“The objective is to capture a 5% market share of the RM800mil CMP pad conditioner market.

“We are now at the final product verification stage,” Tan added.

MQ is expected to be a profitable group in three years, according to Tan.

Moving into the aerospace market

SEEING a decline in its hard disk drive (HDD) component business, MQ Technology Bhd, a local company in the high-precision tooling HDD industry, is diversifying into the aerospace business, with plans to make it the only Penang-based company with the technological capability to make parts and components for aircraft.

MQ Technology plans to start production of small components used in private jets by the middle of next year for Jetline International (M) Sdn Bhd, a local company licensed by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry to design, manufacture, and assemble aircraft and aircraft parts.

MQ Technology group managing director Tan Cheow Boon said that the group was now working with Jetline on the detailed drawings of the parts and components needed.

“We are studying the kind of production capacity we need to manufacture for Jetline.

“We are also talking to financial institutions on the funding required to execute this project,” Tan said.

On Aug 19, MQ Technology through its subsidiary, Microlead Precision Technology Sdn Bhd, entered a contract manufacturing agreement with Jetline for the provision of services, parts and components of aircraft for a period of 10 years effective from the date of signing of the agreement.

Under the agreement, Jetline will disclose to Microlead the technology necessary to enable the company to manufacture the products.

“Jetline has secured orders for 250 SJ30 private jets over the next 10 years.

“We will be producing small components and parts used in the wing panels and landing gear of the private jets.

“We also plan to build a new plant on a one-acre site within the existing premises of MQ’s headquarters in Bayan Lepas to focus on our aerospace activities. We have already drawn up the building plans for the facility.

“We are now applying for the AS9000 certification, the aerospace basic quality system standard, that will qualify us to make parts and components for the aerospace market,” he said.

GEORGE TOWN: Jetline International (M) Sdn Bhd, a local jet manufacturer, will generate RM13bil in turnover for five years starting from 2016 following its acquisition of a RM1.1bil US-based jet manufacturing company.

Jetline inked the acquisition deal last year and will invest over RM1bil, with plans to start initial production in Subang.

There are plans to move the production to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at a later date.

Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) chief executive officer Datuk Noharuddin Nordin said the acquisition was a landmark deal by itself, in line with the country's pursuit of a high income economy that would bring more than just inexpensive assembly labour'and catapult the country to become a developed nation by 2020.

”With the acquisition, Jetline will bring to Malaysia the high technology of aircraft design, manufacturing, and assembly,” he said after the handing over of an aircraft manufacturing licence from Mida to Jetline at the Langkawi International Maritme and Aerospace exhibition 2013.

Noharuddin said the new incentive packages for the aerospace industry that were endorsed by the Government has already seen positive results.
