IMPLEMENTING a windfall tax to companies who are making an extraordinary profit from the Covid-19 pandemic could impose a negative perception on potential investors, said Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

“Any new introduction of windfall tax should be reviewed carefully as it could impose negative perceptions on investors who may see it as the government is taking advantage of their profits,” he told Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

About three-fourths of people infected in a Massachusetts Covid-19 outbreak were fully vaccinated against the coronavirus with four of them ending up in the hospital, according to new data published Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The new data, published in the U.S. agency’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, also found that fully vaccinated people who get infected carry as much of the virus in their nose as unvaccinated people, and could spread it to other individuals.

Hong Kong (CNN Business)China is in the middle of a huge power crunch as extreme weather, surging demand for energy and strict limits on coal usage deliver a triple blow to the nation's electricity grid. It's a problem that could last for months, straining the country's economic recovery and weighing on global trade.

Several Chinese provinces have said they are facing a power crunch in recent weeks, including some of the country's most important engines for economic growth.
Guangdong province — a manufacturing center responsible for $1.7 trillion, or more than 10%, of China's annual economic output and a bigger share of its foreign trade — has been rationing power for over a month. The restrictions have forced companies across the province to shut down for a few days per week. Some local authorities are warning that power rationing could last through the end of the year.
It's not just Guangdong. At least nine provinces have said they are dealing with similar issues, including Yunnan, Guangxi and the manufacturing hub of Zhejiang, forcing regional authorities to announce power curbs across an area of China the size of the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Japan combined.

The number of positive Covid cases among those accredited for the Tokyo Olympics has risen to 71, prompting a warning from officials the Games are far from certain of going ahead.

Toshiro Muto, the head of the Tokyo Olympics organising committee, did not rule out cancelling the event if cases spike, despite the opening ceremony being scheduled to take place on Friday night.

Muto delivered the stark warning after a public health expert warned the bubble system at the Athletes Village was already "broken". An American gymnast and a Czech beach volleyball player were among the latest positive tests.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc in our lives as we move into the second half of 2021. Even though countries are speeding up the inoculation of their citizens, the deadly virus has got better at adapting itself as we get reports of the discovery of new variants from time to time.

n the last 4 weeks, the virus has been detected in more than 30 countries, including the UK and Australia. This new strain is also thought to be more destructive than the Delta variants detected in India last year.

Though data is scarce, one preliminary study by a group of researchers from Chile reveals that the Lambda variant has increased transmissibility and immune escape potential, and 7 mutations – which mean that it is likely more contagious, and our bodies may not detect it at all, making it more deadly.

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Asian stocks were down early on Tuesday as growing fears the spreading Delta variant of the coronavirus would harm the global economic recovery sent riskier assets, including oil, skidding sharply.

MSCI's gauge of Asia Pacific stocks outside Japan fell as much as 0.29%, with Australia's S&P/ASX 200 down 0.39%.

Japan's Nikkei 225 hit a six-month low in early trade and widened the losses to 1.05%.

The Hang Seng Index opened 0.3% lower and China's benchmark CSI300 Index slid 0.7% at the start.

In Beijing, policymakers kept the benchmark lending rate for corporate and household loans unchanged at its July fixing on Tuesday, despite growing expectations for a cut after a surprise lowering of bank reserve requirements.

"The markets are clearly on risk-off mode," said Edison Pun, senior market analyst at Saxo Markets, adding that Wall Street's uptrend is weakening.

Stocks on Wall Street fell as much as 2% on Monday, with the Dow posting its worst day in nine months as COVID-19 deaths increased in the United States.

Riskier assets globally have come under pressure recently as many countries struggle to contain the outbreak of the fast-spreading Delta virus variant, raising fears that further lockdowns and other restrictions could upend the worldwide economic recovery.

"Despite the vaccine rollout, markets do not appear to be learning to live with COVID-19," ANZ analysts wrote in a note to clients.

"Sentiment appears to have shifted, at least for the moment, to a persuasion that growth and earnings expectations may be overdone," they said, noting that risk-averse investors were bailing out of commodities.

The situation has improved dramatically since January, when Covid deaths outpaced heart disease and cancer as the country’s top killer, according to a Bloomberg analysis.
