there is a closer airport that are 30 minutes away but it is up to pilot decision which airport is safe to land. the smaller airport may not have the emergency service that perth airport have. also the A330 may not have fuel dump capability and will need to burn fuel until it is light enough to land so taking the 90 minutes trip back to Perth is reasonable.

yesterday Malindo flight OD132 also have engine failure and diverted to Delhi. the interesting thing when you compare the two flight is that AAX flight is almost full while Malindo flight only have 73 passanger and crew on a 737. The shaking is because of turbine fan are inbalance after one blade broken. the engine was turned off but the turbine will continue to spin because of windmill effect as the plane are travelling at high speed. other parts of the airplane work perfectly as designed. as twin engine plan can fly and land with one engine.

this looks like a problem with Rolls Royce. everything else with the plane work perfectly as designed and landed safely. the vibration was because of the broken engine are still turning it fan. these blade does not need much wind to move, you can see at the airport when the plane are park there a slight breeze can cause the fan to turn.

Rolls Royce maybe in the hot seat as the ATSB found that their engine for Airbus had propensity for broken turbine blade
