PETALING JAYA: Associating homosexuality with corruption is an insult to people who have been deprived of basic livelihood and dignity simply because of their gender identity and sexuality, says lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activist Numan Afifi (pic).

Numan's statement came in the wake of a sex video of a man and purportedly a minister that has gone viral, followed by a confession by the man who then asked that the minister be probed for corruption.

"It is so insulting to see these sex scandals being associated with a vague mention of corruption – as if you are a corrupt politician, then you must be 'sexually deviant' somehow.

"Fact is most of the suffering of our people — the workers, the Orang Asli, women, LGBTQ folks, people with disability — are caused by straight, self-claimed religious men in power and their cronies, who decide upon themselves that they could dictate on how others lived their lives," Numan said on his Facebook page on Wednesday (June 12).

Earlier on Wednesday (June 12), Muhammad Haziq Abdul Aziz, who is the senior private secretary to Deputy Primary Industries Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, named the minister and said he was not fit to be a leader.

Numan lamented that politicians trivialised the community's stories into a "drama of corruption".

"Enough is enough lah. There are real lives at stake!

"While we become complacent with the way our society is heading, every month there are dozens of trans people who are harassed by the police as well as young gay and bisexual men being disproportionately charged under colonial sodomy law," he said.

Numan also urged Malaysians to "reject this polemics and outdated style of gaining power" and to start demanding for real action to be done.

"Get in the game, do not get distracted and start showing all these old politicians their real place: trash bin," he said.
