what would happen along the way is US would have to be forced to lift sanction on venezuela to release oil into the market to tame the oil price so it wont be a spike and crack spread could absorb part of the price shock at this level.

if there's consistent trend for both oil and crack spread, hedging loss shouldn't be huge unless they do it deliberately for creative accounting reason or tax avoidance.

high crack spread is actually a double edged sword. so long as they play with it properly, everyone won't get hurt in the near term.
the bigger picture is US and friends + EU have been having low interest rates for a very long time so this is the best opportunity blow the inflation balloon. Whether it will go burst in the near term, i don't think so. they have been brewing this moment for so long so the music will play for a few years before it goes bust.
