KNM managed to a secure a loan and bank guarantee of 220 million euros (RM985mil) at end-2013. The credit facility was arranged by UniCredit Bank AG.
“On average, the company pays an interest rate of 6% to 7% per annum. With the initiative, they are looking at saving about 1% to 2% each year,” he notes, adding that the savings is quite significant for the company as that will translate into RM10mil to RM20mil based on its borrowings of about RM1bil.
Compared with its net profit of RM21mil as at Sept 30, 2013, the savings will lift its earnings significantly in the financial year ending Dec 31, 2014 (FY14).
“All the initiatives the company has taken are good and all the negative news have been priced in,” Chan adds.
Besides the interest cost savings, the company’s financial position is set to improve after it hived off its loss-making operations in Brazil.
The divestment of KNM Brazilian Group of Companies was completed last September and that will see the company book a one-off disposal gain of RM10mil, the O&G firm tells Bursa Malaysia.
Chan says going forward, its earnings will no longer be dragged down by the South American unit.
An analyst who speaks on condition of anonymity estimates that the company may see an improvement in its financials to the tune of RM40mil in FY14.
“Now that the company is in a better financial position, it stands a better chance when it bids for contracts,” says another observer.

A DEBT restructuring coupled with brighter job prospects have sent KNM Group Bhd shares to a one-year high of 77.5 sen yesterday.
The process equipment manufacturer, which had fallen off the radar of most investment houses, is quietly regaining traction.
US-based funds Blackrock and State Street Corp transacted some shares last week. Bloomberg data show that the two funds own 1.85 million shares and 5.1 million shares respectively.
O&G analysts reckon that KNM will be a key beneficiary of the refinery and petrochemical integrated development (Rapid) project.
They expect Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) to make the final investment decision on the US$20bil (RM66bil) project by April.
UOB KayHian Malaysia Research analyst Danny Chan tells StarBizWeek that KNM has an addressable market of RM10bil to RM13.3bil in Petronas’ Rapid project.
As a niche player in the local market, KNM stands a good chance in getting a slice of the pie if it puts in bids with the right pricing, he says.
