@observatory you are a very pro investor indeed. But you got one thing wrong: Some insurance companies have low ROE due to their riskier underwriting and markdown on investments. Especially re-insurers. So let's say you have one year of higher claims and cat losses, the combined ratio will shoot up, and ROE stays flat if investment returns also remain flat.

You were right about Top Glove losing market share to China and Serba Dinamik being a complete fraud but wrong on Dayang's impairment losses in 2022, Alam/Perdana Petroleum back in 2013 as well as Genetec. So will you be right this time on MNRB?

Stock

Obviously I respect Chung's opinion but I think it is a bit unfair to compare this company with a completely fraudulent company like Serba Dinamik.

Can you explain why you think that the profit is not sustainable? Because from what I can gather, the company can keep the momentum going for their non-life business

Lol cause they release the earnings note to their internal clients bro. MNRB usually issues dividend in the first quarter of any fiscal year.

You cannot analyze an insurance company by using the valuation model for consumer discretionary and healthcare companies. It's apple and oranges dude

Stock

1 month ago | Report Abuse

@George Ngc cause MNRB is an insurance company and insurance co re-invest their profits into equities and fixed income assets. This is also the reason why Warren Buffett loves the insurance industry so much. Almost unlimited supply of money from life and motor insurance and then funnel all the profits and investment returns into buying up more assets.

Allianz SE reported 6.8% higher profit for the first quarter amid strong results from the non-life insurance business and inflows at its bond manager Pacific Investment Management Co.

Group operating profit climbed to €3.99 billion ($4.3 billion), driven by better-than-expected results in property-casualty insurance, Allianz said Wednesday. Pimco attracted €32.4 billion from outside clients, the best quarter in at least five years, reversing outflows at the end of last year.

Allianz Chief Executive Officer Oliver Baete is relying on the asset management business, which also includes Allianz Global Investors, to diversify the company beyond insurance. After a challenging two years that saw some clients flee fixed-income securities, Pimco is now profiting from returning investor appetite for bonds as interest rates are expected to have peaked.

Company is doing really well thanks to the recent rally in Malaysian equities. In the last quarter, capital calls were negligible. Retakaful and family takaful combined ratio/GWP/NWP all looked healthy. The main factor for the spectacular earnings was the ATH investment returns supported by company's aggressive move to expand their re-takaful business

"The environment division, spearheaded by wholly owned Stream Group Sdn Bhd, which is looking to secure contracts in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, could prove to be a game changer.

“We are in the midst of incorporating or setting up subsidiaries in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia … In order to undertake projects in these countries, we need a presence. In Indonesia, we have a partner but in Saudi Arabia, we are going at it alone,” Ahmad Kabeer says.

Other than Malaysia, Stream has a presence in Singapore, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and India."

[[The motor segment is most vulnerable to natural catastrophe events for the UAE’s primary insurers as these risks are largely retained by the market. AM Best notes this catastrophe is likely to cause a significant deterioration in the performance of motor portfolios due to flooded roads and car parks can quickly result in a large number of losses. Although it is predicted that these risks will be largely retained by the market.

However, the motor policy standard imposed by the UAE’s Ministry of Economy does not cover natural disasters, leaving insurers the choice of whether to offer this coverage. Typically it includes flood cover; however, these represent a minority of premiums with most customers opting for cheaper third-party liability policies.

The changing weather trends have already influenced the behaviour of insurers across the wider Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) region, notes AM Best. In 2023 and early 2024, the market observed an increase in hailstorms and heavy rainfalls that notably caused flash floods with some insurers starting to take action to reduce potential losses through loss mitigation tactics.]]
