PUTRAJAYA (Sept 3): Malaysia is in no hurry to get the Covid-19 vaccine as it is of paramount importance to ensure that the vaccine is effective and safe for use, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba.

For the moment, he said the government was still waiting for vaccine-producing countries to conduct clinical trials involving three phases, with the last phase being a test on humans.

“We are awaiting the countries to do the clinical trials... China has begun the trials in the United Arab Emirates and Brazil.

“Russia has not started the third phase of the clinical trials,” he said when asked about reports stating that some countries have begun negotiations for the purchase of the vaccine.

Speaking to reporters after launching the 2020 World Food Safety Day celebration here today, Dr Adham said the Health Ministry is always in touch with the vaccine-producing countries.

On the Covid-19 screening carried out at public markets, he said the ministry had conducted screening at 464 markets nationwide with 36,919 samples were taken.

“From that total, 287 (0.87%) were tested positive for Covid-19,” he said adding that inspections at public markets would be carried out continuously.

PUTRAJAYA (Bernama): The Health Ministry is already looking four months ahead by preparing for a possible spike of Covid-19 infections due to winter weather conditions in several other parts of the world.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said although the country’s infection rate is now under control, developments in other countries, such as India, South Korea, Japan, Spain and France where an increase in cases during cold weather conditions, must be considered.

"Our concern is that there would be an increase in cases during that period and due to this we have to make preparations, ” he told Bernama when met after attending the National Day 2020 celebrations at Dataran Pahlawan Negara here Monday (Aug 31).

At the same time, Dr Noor Hisham said a mutation of the Covid-19 virus has made it more infectious and as such, he urged the people to always be on their guard and strictly comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

He said as there is still no proven vaccine in sight, the ministry would continue to carry out control measures.

HONG KONG, Aug 30: More than 24.84 million people have been reported to be infected by the Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic globally and 837,623 have died, according to a Reuters tally.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

The United States are the worst hit country with more than 182,000 cases of death and almost 6 million registered confirmed cases.

They are followed by Brazil. Just over six months after registering its first case of the Covid-19, Brazil crossed the grim threshold of 120,000 people killed by Covid-19 on Saturday (Aug 29), with no end in sight to the crisis.

The country of 212 million people has now registered 120,262 deaths from the virus and 3,846,153 infections, the health ministry said in its daily update.

Brazil is just the second country to surpass a death toll of 120,000 in the pandemic, after the United States, where the number killed is now more than 182,000.

Unlike in Europe and Asia, where the virus hit hard and then subsided, Brazil's outbreak is advancing at a slow but steady pace, said Christovam Barcellos, a researcher at public health institute Fiocruz.

"Brazil is unique in the world. Since the start of the pandemic, its curve has been different from other countries', much slower," he told AFP.

"It has stabilised now, but at a very dangerous level: nearly 1,000 deaths and 40,000 cases per day.... And Brazil still isn't past the peak."

The pandemic has also turned political in Latin America's largest country.

President Jair Bolsonaro has downplayed the virus and attacked governors and mayors who imposed lockdown measures, arguing the economic damage is worse than the disease itself.

The far-right leader is instead pushing the drug hydroxychloroquine as the solution to the health crisis, despite studies showing it is ineffective against Covid-19.

He again said Saturday the controversial medication had "saved thousands of victims' lives" in Brazil.

Bolsonaro even took what he called the "right-wing" drug himself when he was diagnosed with the virus in July.

"It's shocking the way (Bolsonaro) has handled this. It's not just his denialism.... He has often crossed the line of disrespecting victims," said political analyst Michael Mohallem of the Getulio Vargas Foundation.

"The number of deaths is scandalously high," he told AFP. "I think someday he'll have to pay the price."

The virus has meanwhile spread to more fragile demographic groups and to the interior of the country.

Impoverished residents of overcrowded favelas, or slums, have been hit especially hard.

So have indigenous groups in the Amazon rainforest, who have a history of vulnerability to outside diseases.

Despite the glowing résumé in the Bursa Malaysia announcement provided by Inix, Wan is better known by his gang moniker, Broken Tooth Koi. He was released from prison in Macau in December 2012 after serving a 14-year sentence for charges including loan-sharking, money laundering and heading a criminal group, news reports say.

Wan was the Dragon Head or head honcho of the infamous 14K triad that operated out of Macau, the former Portuguese colony. It is said his reach spanned many parts of Europe.

“In the 1990s, he was notorious … to have him as a chairman of a publicly listed company, I really don’t know what to say,” comments one market watcher.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (Bernama): Bursa Malaysia is likely to trade in a similar pattern next week, with the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) expected to move in a tight range of between 1,540 to 1,560 as investors begin their bargain hunting.

Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd economist Adam Mohamed Rahim said the 3.3 per cent decline in the key index for the week, after settling at 1,525.21 points on Friday, presents an opportunity to accumulate some stocks, in particular glove maker stocks which have been hit on news Russia is preparing to approve a second Covid-19 vaccine.

"In the long run, demand for rubber gloves will remain high even once a vaccine is successfully procured as hygiene awareness continues to be high,” he told Bernama.

LETTER: Considering that Muslims make up more than 60 per cent of the Malaysian population, coupled with the increase in halal awareness in recent years, it is only logical for us to consider getting the Covid-19 vaccine to be certified halal right from the start.

The Department of Standards Malaysia, under the International Trade and Industry Ministry, had developed the world's first International Organisation for Standardisation-level standard as the guideline for the manufacturing of halal pharmaceuticals — the MS2424 — way back in 2012. This standard was revised last year to include guidance on the manufacture of halal vaccines.

The working group that developed this standard comprised experts with the skills, knowledge, proficiency, capability and experience on the halal certification process in Malaysia. Some of the working group's members have also audited conventional vaccine plants around the world.

If Malaysia can pre-book the vaccines for use by Malaysians, would it be possible for a combination of Pharma-GMP and halal audit to be performed at the same time when the vaccine is being registered with the Drug Control Authority of the Health Ministry?

HONG KONG (AFP): Markets struggled Wednesday (Aug 26) in Asia as investors weighed ongoing worries about the economic impact of coronavirus and fresh outbreaks in some countries against signs it is easing in other parts of the world and hopes for a vaccine.

Wall Street provided a third-successive record-breaking lead, with tech firms' march ever higher unmoved by a sharp drop in confidence in the crucial US consumer sector, while easing China-US trade fears provided support.

The closely watched Conference Board index saw a sharp drop in July, with views on future expectations and the present both down after a summer spike in infections across the US Sun Belt, suggesting little chance of improvement any time soon

"Disappointment over the lack of another fiscal package supporting incomes, still choppy news on the virus and last week's jobless news were not that comforting, either," said National Australia Bank's Ray Attrill.

"This reading puts consumer confidence back to pandemic lows."

And while there are signs the disease is levelling off in the US, other countries are fighting to subdue new flare-ups, with Spain calling in the army to try to help curb its spread and South Korea reclosing all schools and kindergartens in the greater Seoul region.

And observers warned the upcoming winter could see more infections as people are forced to stay indoors.

In early trade, Hong Kong and Shanghai each edged up 0.1 per cent, while Taipei gained 0.3 per cent.

But Tokyo finished the morning down 0.2 per cent, Sydney and Singapore shed one per cent and Seoul slipped 0.3 per cent. Wellington, Jakarta and Manila were also down.

"The situation is still far better than it was in the spring with more asymptomatic cases and much broader testing," said AxiCorp's Stephen Innes.

"However, recent momentum and outbreaks around the world are worrying, as second and third-wave coronavirus outbreaks still pose the most significant threat to the economic recovery."

But he added tech firms would likely continue to be well supported as people work, study and shop from home as fresh containment measures are imposed.

Oil prices held on to Tuesday's big gains as Hurricane Laura threatens installations in the Gulf of Mexico, with the commodity sitting around highs not seen since early March.

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 20): News on Genting Hong Kong Ltd (Gent HK) opting to suspend payments to all creditors to preserve cash is expected to trigger a knee-jerk reaction to the share prices of its sister companies — Genting Bhd and Genting Malaysia Bhd (GENTM) on Bursa Malaysia, although the duo do not hold any equity stake in the Hong Kong-listed cruise operator.

The only link between Gent HK and the two Bursa-listed companies is that they have a common controlling shareholder — Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay. Lim holds a 75.55% stake in Gent HK, and 44.8% in Genting Bhd, which controls 49.45% in GENTM and 52.66% in Genting Singapore Ltd (GENTS).

Lim is the chairman and chief executive office of Genting Bhd, GENTM and Gent HK. He is also the executive chairman of GENTS.

“Yes, there could be spillover effect because some people might be mistaken that Genting or GENTM has a stake in GENT HK. Also, some local banks are among the creditors,” said a chief investment officer.
