On Wall Street, all three major indexes hit record closing highs, with energy, financial and materials leading gains among S&P sectors as investors snapped up cyclical and under-priced value stocks.

The Cboe Volatility Index, Wall Street's fear gauge, ended below 20 for the first time since February 2020, shortly before the coronavirus pandemic roiled U.S. stocks.

"We are continuing this rotation that would be consistent with the new business cycle, and as (bond) yields go up, value and cyclicals will lead," Hayes said.

https://www.theedgemarkets.com/article/hsbc-among-top-bank-share-gainers-asia-reflation-bets

(Feb 16): HSBC Holdings Plc and Standard Chartered Plc’s Hong Kong shares are among top gainers of bank stocks across the region on optimism faster economic growth and higher interest rates will stoke profits.

“Banks/financials generally do well when market rates rise — which they have been recently — on global reflation expectations,” said Chetan Seth, Asia-Pacific equity strategist at Nomura Holdings Inc.

On the way...
One has to look beyond the 2020 results...we may see bad dent provisions come down 2nd half 2021...price would have moved up on expectation. Good opportunity to invest if there is mild correction.

@Riaz1954....according to analyst, during the recent pre closing briefying....management has stated that most of the doubtful debts has been front loaded into the 2020 report....the last one being the coming 4Q report.

For 2021, the provisions will be back to normal plus some from the moratorium....

World wide banks recovering with good quarter results! In Malaysia we are probably a quarter behind! But people should invest for better returns.

@Riaz1954 Exactly, I was shocked seeing banks in MY drop, but banks in other countries up. This upcoming QR should be better due to reduction in loan loss provision. This bank in AU even unwinds the provision

Is it because of EPF selling banking stocks to pay the unconditional I-Sinar category 2 that the government just approved?

KUALA LUMPUR: The banking, oil and gas and aviation sectors should reap significant benefits from the National Covid-19 immunisation programme launched by the government on Tuesday, said an economist.

Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd economist Adam Mohamed Rahim said the commencement of the immunisation programme was likely to revive business confidence in the country and consequently propel economic growth with more movement restrictions expected to be relaxed.

https://www.theedgemarkets.com/article/analysts-mixed-cimbs-outlook

UOB Kay Hian’s analyst Keith Wee sensed growing optimism from CIMB’s management about the group’s recovery prospects for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2021 (FY21) despite the reimposition of the movement control order (MCO).

Wee believed that the worst could already be over for CIMB in FY20, suggesting a two-year earnings compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 100%.

“The lumpy bond and derivative impairments (about RM500 million), oil and gas (O&G) specific provisions (RM1 billion), coupled with management provision overlays in FY20, could potentially set the stage for a staggering two-year earnings CAGR in excess of 100% for FY21 to FY22,” he added.

Wee also shared that CIMB’s management “remains hopeful of sustaining a 40%-50% dividend payout ratio for FY20 and beyond” as it expects its Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio to remain comfortably above 12% (currently 12.9%) even after stress tests.

On the other hand, RHB Research Institute analysts Liew Wai Hoong and Fiona Liong maintained their "buy" call on CIMB, with a TP of RM5.10.

They shared the same view with UOB’s Wee, pointing out that CIMB’s total provisions are expected to have been elevated in the fourth quarter of FY20 (4QFY20) as the lender brought forward more provisions to FY20, “thus paving way for a cleaner recovery in FY21” where credit cost is expected to be lower year-on-year (y-o-y).

@Riaz1954 looking at banks counters worldwide, I think going back to pre-covid in Q12021 is not a problem. I am tracking to see if they will be able to break above and pre-covid level and inch higher after that with the pent-up demand for lifestyle upgrades after being confined for so long.

Niaga results I guess not too bad...still profitable...net profit down around 40% from previous year..increase in bad debt provisions....I think where other industries are making losses...this result is not too bad...and hopefully impairments set aside are more than sufficient with recovery in 2021...

Dividend wise big increase from previous year ..that suggests Bank is more confident about 2021 and it has strong cash flow and solvency capital requirements. This show flow into CIMB group results....

DeepValueInvestor...you are correct there is likely to be unleashing of pent up demand once vaccination begins to take hold....I can see very strong demand not only in US but world wide as people react to be constrained for 1 year plus. Timing wise now is the right time to take position for upward momentum that will be unleashed.
