The feelings of non-Malays have been ignored, says Tan Sri Goh Tian Chuan (pic), reports China Press.The Huazong president was referring to the demand to abolish vernacular schools at the Kongres Maruah Melayu (Malay Dignity Congress) on Sunday.

“The dignity and feelings of non-Malays have been ignored, ” he said in a statement.

Goh pointed out that non-Malays have never questioned or challenged the position of the Rulers, the national language, Islam as the official religion, or special rights enjoyed by the Malays.

However, he added that the rights of non-Malays are also enshrined in the Constitution.

“We do not have the rights to stop the demands at the congress. However, we have the right to voice out our concerns, ” he said.Goh added that the topics discussed during the congress including that of religion, education and special rights, was worrisome to the non-Malay society.

“After Malaysia Baharu was born with the change in government, whether or not it is intentional, are we subtly walking an old path we once treaded?” he asked.

The congress, which was attended by prominent leaders from both sides of the political divide, saw some racially-charged demands mooted by its attendees across general areas namely religion, politics, economy, education and culture.

Among the demands was the call for key positions in the government to only be headed by Malays.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who attended the event, said the Pakatan Harapan government would look into the demands made, but maintained that not all would be met.

“There is a demand, but it doesn’t mean that the government has to accept the demands. We have to look into what we can do and what we cannot do, ” he had said.
