In 1968, he joined the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA) as an Economist and thereafter served in the Ministry of Finance as Assistant Secretary from 1970 to 1972. In 1972, he returned to MIDA to serve as Senior Economist before joining Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad as Manager in 1974 where he was promoted to General Manager and later to Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director. He retired in March 2004. Datuk Nik Ibrahim sits on the board of a few other local companies.
