Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is finalising on its open tender for the RM800 million undersea cable system project linking Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, with 19 private licensee companies eligible for contract, said MCMC chairman Datuk Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi .

The tender is for 50% of the project sum with the remainder will be financed by MCMC through the RM2.7 billion fund allocated under the federal government budget 2015.

Mohamed Sharil, however, was unable to disclose the names of the companies as the tender results are not out yet. The results of the tender is expected to be made known by year end.

The project, expected to enhance the telecommunication connectivity between the regions, is estimated to take about 2 and a half years to complete.

“We are currently in the process of short listing the bidders and we should be awarding the contract by end of this year.

“Through the partnership MCMC is looking at investing 50% of the investment while the other 50% should be contributed by the private partner,” he said.

Sharil said the cable would start from Cherating, extend to Mersing and subsequently to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

“The project will improve the connectivity between West Malaysia and East Malaysia,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sharil said the digital landscape for the next six months will also involve 1,000 towers being built in rural areas, using the universal service provision (USP) fund, as announced in Budget 2015.

“We are also looking at spectrum reforming in which we are moving and upgrading from the old 2G technology to 4G technology.

“The spectrum reforming will be done towards end of this year till early 2015. By second quarter of next year, 2Q15 some of the internet service providers (ISP) will be having higher speed packages as well,” he said.

Shahril said by 2Q15, digital television will come on stream on the back of the increase in broadband speed.

“Therefore, by the year 2016 or 2017, we will start refusing the importation of old television sets which are not digital ready.

“All in all, we are working towards improving the infrastructure and connectivity, making householders more connected and getting more competitive,” said Sharil.

Under Budget 2015, MCMC was allocated RM100 million through a Digital Content Industry Fund and RM2.7 billion in the course if three years to develop high speed broadband in areas with high economic impact.
