The fundamentals of this company have deteriorated significantly since year 2019. From high ROEs (30%+) from 2013 to 2018, its ROE was 5% in 2023.

Many lessons can be gained from studying this stock to benefit our investing.

It is extremely important to understand the business, its business model and particularly its economic moat(s) of a company. This is so essential, especially for those who are investing for the long term.

Hope this article enlightens us on billionaires, especially with so many news of billionaires recently in our local press and social media.

Quality: The Good versus Bad Billionaires

Good billionaires emerge outside "rent-seeking industries."

Common rent-seeking industries are construction, real estate, gambling, mining, steel, aluminum, oil, gas and other commodity sectors that mainly involve digging resources out of the ground.

In these businesses, major players often spend their time extracting maximum rents from limited national resources by bribing politicians if necessary, not growing national wealth in innovative ways.

New names on the billionaire list can be a favourable sign. Looking at the scale of billionaire fortunes is not enough to reveal the extent of their political vulnerabilities.

Comparing the share of the wealth generated by "bad billionaires."

To make a qualitative judgement about the sources of great fortunes, compare the total wealth of tycoons in these corruption prone businesses to that of all billionaires in the country.

This no doubt miscasts many honest mining and oil tycoons, but even in nations where these industries are relatively uncorrupt, they tend to make weak contributions to productivity and to tie the economy to the volatile swings of commodity prices.

Good billionaires

This label is for tycoons in industries that are known to make the largest contributions to growth in productivity or that make popular consumer products, like smartphones or cars.

These "good" industries are the ones least likely to generate backlashes against wealth creation; they include technology, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and telecoms, as well as retail, e-commerce and entertainment.

How are nations generating their wealth?

Analysing billionaires does offer anecdotally telling, real-time evidence of how nations are generating wealth.

Countries with small percentage of bad billionaires
Among the largest developed economies of 2019, bad billionaires controlled the smallest shares of billionaire wealth: in Italy (7%) and France(9%) - a good sign for both countries.

Only 13% of Swedish billionaire wealth originates in rent seeking industries. Much of the rest is created at globally competitive companies, including H&M in fashion and IKEA in furniture retailing.

Countries with large percentage of bad billionaires
Few new or good billionaires are to be found in nations like Turkey or Russia, where aging regimes have turned away from reform and promoted favoured tycoons. The undisputed capital of connected tycoons is Moscow. Nearly 70% of Russian billionaire wealth comes from bad billionaires. The Kremlin treats billionaires with contempt, arbitrarily changing rules that govern their businesses knowing the public has little sympathy for a billionaire class widely perceived as corrupt.

Popular resentment against great wealth is palpable in Mexico as well, where bad billionaires also control close to 70% of billionaire wealth. Mexican tycoons are known for cornering industries such as telephones and concrete, which earn monopoly profits for their owners while driving up prices for consumers.

Bad billionaires typically arise in family empires, particularly in the emerging world, where weaker institutions make it easier for old families to cultivate political connections.

Over the last 10 years, the price of THPlant contracted from RM 1.80 to the present level.
If you study the prices of many companies, you will soon realise that it is not uncommon for a stock price to rise 50% from its lowest price and the drop its equivalent 1/3rd from its high in a 52 week period.

It is high claim to be able to buy at the lowest price and to sell at the highest price. At best, one can buy close to the lowest price and to sell close to the highest price. Also, at the lowest price and at the higest price, generally only a few transactions occured at those prices.

It is important to distinguish between what is the fluctuation in the market prices and not confuse this to be the prediction of a "genius".

Once again, do not be fooled by noises generated by the forumer from Singapore. He is more like a snake oil salesman than an investor.

Yes, the CPO prices were high in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Many estate owners enjoyed huge profits.

Today the CPO prices and profit margins have normalised to those before 2021.

If you must buy a good plantation stock, look at United Plantation. It is very well run, highly profitable. Its ROE has been consistent and high.

As for JTiasa, it was a gruesome company. Most gruesome company remains gruesome. The reason it is trading at a discount to its NAV is obvious.

Many in the stock market should know that a lot of people lose money at time when a company's business enjoy a temporary good performance.

Assuming you demand a return twice that of the risk free fixed deposit rates in our local banks, you will not buy this stock unless it is selling at below 70 sen per share. Yet, you will still need to demand a margin of safety on this buying price.

Can you understand why it is not surprising it trades at a discount to its NAV?

These words of wisdom from Benjamin Graham

In an interview shortly before he passed away, Graham provided us with these words of wisdom:

The main point is to have the right general principles and the character to stick to them.… The thing that I have been emphasizing in my own work for the last few years has been the group approach. To try to buy groups of stocks that meet some simple criterion for being undervalued—regardless of the industry and with very little attention to the individual company.… Imagine—there seems to be practically a foolproof way of getting good results out of common stock investment with a minimum of work. It seems too good to be true. But all I can tell you after 60 years of experience, it seems to stand up under any of the tests that I would make up.

That interview took place thirty-five years ago. Yet we still have an opportunity to benefit from Graham’s sage advice today.

I wish you all—the patience to succeed and the time to enjoy it. Good luck.

Over the last 10 years, the revenues grew about 4% early and the PBT grew at a slightly faster rate of about 6.9%. This indicated its profit margins had improved. Over the 10 years above, its PBT Margin increased steadily from 8.3% to 12.5%.

Its NAPS (Net Asset Price per Share) grew from RM 4.603 per share to RM 9.112 per share. F&N is a great company, with high ROE in the mid teens. Its ROE for the above 10 years period ranged from low of 12.9% to a high of 19.4%; averaging 15% to 16%.

Given the risk free interest rate of 5% or so, its present price of RM 29.2 per shar means it is trading at a P/NAPS of 3.01 x. This valuation means it is trading at a fair price today.

F&N has distributed dividends yearly. Its DPO was around 52% to 56%. Its latest DY is 2.68%.

In summary, F&N is a great company, growing at a slow rate of 5% to 7% yearly. It retained about 50% of its earnings for future growth and with its ROE at around 15% or so, and many new projects for future growth, this stock in my portfolio remains for the long term.

DPO was around 50% and recently higher due to exception good price for CPO.

Just pointing to calvintaneng the difference between truth and lies. Good morning.

It is truly remarkable, the power of compounding and the ability to identify these companies with earnings power over the long term.

Do you know that DLady was priced RM 1.60 per share, Nestle RM 6 to RM 8 per share and Petdag RM 2.00 per share in the 1990s?

Look at their latest annual dividends:
DLady 50 sen per share
Nestle RM 2.62 per share
Petdag 76 sen per share

Those who have acquired these companies and still holding them till today, look at the returns of these dividends based on the historical costs. [Hint: better than "a-long rates, and not including the share price capital appreciation.]

The prices of these stocks have dropped from their highest and DLady has dropped a lot. There are various reasons for these. How you exploit these opportunities depend on how you approach your investing. Regards.

Don't be fooled by the promoter that TSH is worth a lot of money and will be realised soon, due to its plantation assets in Nusantara. The Indonesian government has acquired and allocated substantial land areas for their new capital in Nusantara. There are plentry of land available for growth in that region. The new capital will definitely cause the prices of land in its immediate region to rise. Those located a few miles away or many miles away, will still need to wait for development to reach its borders. This pattern has been the case and is nothing new.

A group of investors bought land near a medium size city in Canada. 30 years later, they were disappointed. The appreciation in land price was miniscule. Why? There were so much vacant land available, thus price rises minimally.

THE PROBLEM OF 3iii IS HE HAS TUNNEL VISION IN INVESTMENT (HE CANNOT SEE WHAT OTHERS SEE)

https://klse.i3investor.com/web/blog/detail/www.eaglevisioninvest.com/2019-12-03-story242906-THE_PROBLEM_OF_3iii_IS_HE_HAS_TUNNEL_VISION_IN_INVESTMENT_HE_CANNOT_SEE_WHAT_OTHERS_SEE

*Investing is simple but not easy. *

It is important to have a strong philosophy, strategy and method. Stay discipline.

*Stock Selection*

Just follow the teachings of Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett. They teach their 4 tenets:
1. Know the business
2. The economic moat of the business
3. The integrity of the managers
4. Always buy with a margin of safety.

Their focus is on great businesses with strong economic moats managed by honest managers bought at fair or undervalued prices. Their teaching is so simple, and they are surprised not many follow their investing style.

Invest for the long term. Also reinvest all dividends and returns for the long term. Why long-term? The power of compounding is truly magical and this is especially so after a long period of investing.

*Portfolio Management*

Only invest the money that you do not need to use in the short term, e.g., the next 5 years. This is to avoid you having to sell to raise cash for emergency use at a time when the market prices were not favourable for you. You should have a sum of money set aside for such emergency use.

Monitor the business of the companies you own. Keep track of their quarterly results. Read the news that are relevant to your companies. This will not take up a lot of your time.

In general, for the majority of the well selected stocks, you can hold for the long term.

There maybe an uncommon occasion when a particular stock need to be sold urgently due to permanent deterioration of its business. Sell early.

Sometimes, a stock has risen to a very high price. Yes, you may wish to sell some or all of the stock. Yet, if you choose not to sell, it is also alright too, especially if you are holding the stock for the long term. You may find that in a few years, the stock may have risen to new high prices.

Rarely, you have identified a fantastic new investment with very high upside and low downside relative to your present stocks in your portfolio and you may wish to sell to redeploy into this new investment.

*Investing style of Peter Lynch*

Yes, Peter Lynch is a great investor and teacher, and you can benefit from employing his methods too: cyclical plays, asset plays and turnarounds.

GCB, Hai-O, APM, KAF, and others were among these types of stocks that have been rewarding in the past. You have to think differently from the crowd. Get in ahead of the smart investors (institutions) and the herd. By the time they spotted these and repricing comes around, you are ready to cash out.

*How many stocks are investable for the long term in the stock market? *

Around 2%. That is, in Bursas, just around 20 stocks. You just need 7 to 10 stocks in your portfolio and you are well diversified. Focus investing. Invest a meaningful amount into each stock.

*Speculation / Intelligent speculation / Short term trading*

For those who must play, ensure you set aside a sum of money separate from your long-term investing for the above purpose and most importantly, never add more money to this activity. This is to avoid permanent harm to your financial health. Majority of players historically lose money in these activities.

*Stay within your circle of competence *

Very important to know the company you invest into. Must know the boundary of your own circle of competence and never stray outside it. Keep educating and learning.

*Know yourself*

Know yourself. What is your financial capacity? What is your tolerance to risk? What is your investing time horizon? What are your investing objectives?

*Keep your investing simple and safe (KISS). *

You do not need to spend excessive amount of time analysing a company if you have a well defined philosophy, strategy and method. Use check lists. Organise the analysis of the stock in the format you like. Better still, seek out the sites where the information are available in the format you like: pay if you must. 20% of the time spent provides you 80% of the information on the company. Be disciplined. Be smart.

*Be decisive*

When the opportunity presents, and with your right preparations and knowledge, have the courage to act. Be decisive.

Happy investing for the long term. Yes, you also need a bit of luck .. just a bit. 😊

Do not sidetrack people with good ideas by talking so much that are irrelevant. At least, admit and tell the truth. Admit that he got it so wrong. What is wrong with this admission? :-) Have a good Chinese New Year. Cheers.
