Depends how you look at share buyback.
Possible reason is to stabilize the drop, to position their share price at higher price point for longer-term future, which will then allow them to sell not only the trench they recently bought (at some loss), but the bigger pile they already hold (at still handsome profit).

If they didn't try to stabilize the share price, their previous (much bigger) holdings will also evaporate in value.
Just a thought, please assume I don't know the facts.
