Diplomacy was in that context & that time a more efficient way of ensuring survival than outright war & rebellion ...

Why wud our ancestors run to Thailand? ... It's not like Thailand was their homeland ... They even managed to restrict Portuguese & Dutch conquest to only Melaka ... They even successfully repelled the Dutch who had tried to take Selangor ... But the Brits they cud not handle, becos the Brits were a much more sophisticated foe than the Portuguese & the Dutch ...
