Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) has remained positive on DRB-Hicom Bhd due to the continued growth momentum of its renowned entity Proton Holdings Bhd.

The decision took into consideration Proton’s sales target of 310,000 units in 2030 and 500,000 units in 2035, its improving customer experiences as well as commitment to introduce new attractive models with improved production and cost efficiencies.

The research outfit has retained its “buy” call on DRB-Hicom with an unchanged target price of RM2.

EV plan on track

On a separate note, Wong said Proton’s electric vehicle (EV) implementation is on track with the first stage being the launch of its “smart” EV distribution in Malaysia and Asean by year end.

He noted that Proton is collaborating with Gentari Sdn Bhd for EV development, mobility and ecosystem of new energy.

“Furthermore, Proton is leveraging Geely’s knowledge and technology to develop its own EV range. Management has guided the new Proton EV model to be launched as early as 2025,” he added.

Wong also said Proton’s overall productivity and cost efficacy ratios have improved substantially over the years.

“We expect continuous improvement in product quality and cost efficiency as Proton consolidates its production to Tanjung Malim (from Shah Alam) by 2026 with investments into better equipped production plants, ” Wong concluded.

Proton’s electric vehicle (EV) is set to debut as early as 2025. This is according to Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB), which research note released yesterday maintained its ‘buy’ rating on DRB-Hicom’s stock.

“Management guided for the new Proton EV to be introduced as early as 2025.

MITI and the government wants a low priced Proton electric car for the mass market soon.

What is the range of the Proton electric car?

The batteries are 100 X 31 Ahr Cells, 370 volts. The EMAS can accelerate to 60 mph in 14 seconds and a maximum speed of 105 mph. Its full range is 350 miles and CO 2 emissions of 60 g/km.

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese transport officials raided a Toyota-affiliated plant Tuesday after the company admitted to cheating on engine testing, as Toyota Motor Corp. reported it sold over 11 million vehicles in 2023 to retain its status as the world’s top car manufacturer.

Hours after the probe began at Toyota Industries Corp.'s plant in Hekinan, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, Toyota Chair Akio Toyoda vowed to steer the company out of scandal and ensure the Japanese automaker's group companies stick to “making good cars.”

“My job is to steer the way for where the overall group should go,” Toyoda said.

He apologized, bowing deeply, and stressed the group vision was rooted in the Toyoda founding family’s ideas of empowering the “genba,” or the workers on the plant floor, “to make good cars that lead to people’s happiness.”

The testing scandal comes at a time of otherwise stellar performance for Toyota, which makes the Camry sedan, Prius hybrid and Lexus luxury models. Its group global vehicle sales for 2023 were a record 11.22 million vehicles, up 7% from the previous year and topping Volkswagen AG of Germany’s global sales of 9.2 million vehicles.

Toyoda spoke in a news conference that was livestreamed from a memorial hall in Nagoya that serves as a museum for the founding family. Sakichi Toyoda invented the automated weaving loom. His son Kiichiro Toyoda, Akio’s grandfather, founded Toyota Motor Corp.
