Nvidia's AI GPUs Are Selling for up to $70,000 in China

Demand for generative artificial intelligence-based services and fears that the U.S. government could restrict sales of GPUs for AI workloads continues to drive up prices in the People's Republic of China. Instead of buying from a distributor or reseller, one may need to talk directly to Nvidia China or even Nvidia corporate headquarters, the report says.
The ridiculously high prices should not come as a surprise. The vast majority of AI clusters are based on Nvidia's compute GPUs and run software designed for Nvidia's CUDA software layer that exclusively supports processors from the green company. If owners of AI services and clusters cannot get enough compute GPUs to support the growing demand for their products, the quality of their services will degrade, and they risk losing their business over time.
Nvidia does not comment on pricing for its data center GPUs, so take the report about prices of the company's compute GPUs with a grain of salt. Chinese manufacturing activity shrinks in July - Caixin PMI

Investing.com -- Chinese manufacturing activity unexpectedly shrank in July, a private survey showed on Tuesday, highlighting the need for more stimulus measures from Beijing as the country’s biggest economic engines run out of steam.

The Caixin manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) read 49.2 for July, lower than forecasts of 50.3 and the prior month’s reading of 50.5. A reading below 50 entails contraction.

The survey showed that manufacturing output fell, while overall new business also declined. The reading also sank back into contraction territory after two months of marginal growth.

The Caixin reading comes in line with the results of a government survey released on Monday, which also showed a contraction in manufacturing activity for July.

But the Caixin reading differs from the official survey, in that it focuses more on smaller, private enterprises, as opposed to the bigger, state-run enterprises surveyed by the official survey.

Tuesday’s reading now shows that a manufacturing slowdown has dented all facets of China's key growth engine. The manufacturing sector is also struggling with a decline in overseas demand, amid worsening economic conditions across the globe.

But the reading further highlights the need for more stimulus measures from Beijing, as a post-COVID economic recovery runs out of steam. Top Chinese officials have vowed to roll out more measures to spur local consumption, which is expected to elicit some economic growth later in the year.

“In terms of policies, guaranteeing employment, stabilizing expectations and increasing household income should still be the top priorities. At present, monetary policy only has limited effect on boosting supply. An expansionary fiscal policy that targets demand should be prioritized,” Wang Zhe, Senior Economist at Caixin Insight Group said in a note.

Chinese economic growth slowed sharply in the second quarter, recent data showed, as growth failed to pick up despite the relaxing of anti-COVID measures earlier this year. Beyond manufacturing, other facets of the Chinese economy also now appear to be slowing.

NEW DELHI: India has rejected Chinese automaker BYD Co's proposal to set up a US$1 billion factory in India in partnership with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd, the Economic Times reported on Saturday.

Reuters reported this month that BYD had submitted a US$1 billion investment proposal to build electric cars and batteries in India in partnership with a local company.

Reuters could not independently verify the contents of The Economic Times' report.

India's Department of Commerce, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) had sought opinions from other departments on the investment proposal, the report said.

China's export slide to steepen in June, imports seen down

BEIJING: China's export slump is expected to have accelerated in June, as sluggish overseas economies struggling with inflation and rising interest rates buy up fewer goods from Chinese factories.

Outbound shipments from the world's second-largest economy were projected to have fallen 9.5% year-on-year, following a drop of 7.5% in May, according to the median forecast of 30 economists in the poll finalised on Wednesday.

That would be the worst decline since January, when China's supply chains were grappling with a wave of COVID-19 infections unleashed by the end of harsh pandemic-related restrictions.

Chinese factory activity has been shrinking in recent months and policymakers are now reckoning with the prospect of prolonged slower growth in the world's second-largest economy around just 3% annually, according to economists' forecasts. That is less than half the rates typical throughout recent decades and creates the feel of an economy in recession.

One-third of respondents to the trade poll forecast that exports in June dropped by a double-digit percentage, as in January. Societe Generale was the most bearish, anticipating a drop of 15.7%.

Imports in June are expected to have shrunk by 4.0%, after a fall of 4.5% in May, reflecting persistently weak domestic demand.

China's trade data will be released on Thursday.
