KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 — Top Glove Corporation Bhd expects sales volume for its second financial quarter ending Feb 28, 2022, to be stronger by about 10 per cent compared to the first quarter amid increasing demand.
Managing director Datuk Lee Kim Meow said the group was expected to improve its sales volume to the United States (US) as it gradually regained its previous export level.
We have seen an increase in weekly orders coming in these past few weeks. With that, in terms of sales for the second quarter, we are expecting to see a stronger volume, he told a virtual media briefing on the group’s financial performance for the first quarter ended Nov 31, 2021 (Q1 FY22) today.
He said demand may also be driven by concerns on the global spread of the Omicron variant, which buyers were currently monitoring to decide whether to stockpile gloves again.
We have not seen the full response to how it has developed all over the world. A lot of our customers are basically on the lookout, and I believe some of them could also be replenishing their stock, Lee said, noting huge orders coming from the Middle East for medical use.
During the previous months, some of our customers bought gloves from China; but with our good rapport with customers, our good cost structure... we were able to be competitive and bring them back (to the fold),” he added.
Lee said Top Glove anticipated the business environment to be challenging in the immediate term, as competition continued to intensify amid moderating glove demand.
Nonetheless, the company remains cautiously optimistic on its industry outlook, given that global demand for gloves as an essential item will continue to grow steadily at a rate of more than 10 per cent per annum even after the pandemic recedes, he said.
According to him, glove demand is expected to be stronger — thus offsetting the growth in supply — as the world learns to live with Covid-19 while managing the emergence of new strains, and glove usage in the medical sector in developing countries continues to increase. While we have entered a challenging and competitive time in the glove industry, we are not deterred. Challenges are not within our control and the way to manage them well is to focus on internal factors.
To this end, we will continue improving our quality and efficiency through research and development (R&D), enhancement programmes and advanced technology, as we deepen our commitment to sustainability, Lee said.
Most importantly, we will ensure our foundation is strong by remaining mentally, physically and financially healthy, which will enable us to weather the tough times, do better and emerge stronger, he added. — Bernama

WASHINGTON (TND) — As cases of omicron are still soaring across the country, hospital systems in several states are overloaded.
New data shows that Maryland state hospitals are the most “COVID-stressed” in the country with one in every three beds filled by a coronavirus patient.
The new measurement is used by states to determine which services hospitals are able to provide to people without severe coronavirus cases.
According to NBC News’ Data Point, hospitals in 19 states are under extreme stress, meaning at least one in every five patients is being treated for COVID-19. Four weeks ago, zero states ranked extreme. There are also 30 states that are considered to be under high stress.
According to the University of Minnesota's COVID-19 Hospitalization Tracking Project, 77% of hospitals are under high or extreme stress.
That means some of these facilities are not able to handle all preventative services like cancer screenings or elective surgeries...

1. Analysts predicted pandemic ending after vaccine rolled out. But WHO cautioned that unvaccinated countries will prolong pandemic and all are not safe until whole world is. Omicron is one of many others..
2. Omicron caused new record cases and hospitalizations. Likely restocking and demands are back.
3. ASP should be stabilised or even go up with elevated demands and lower than expected supplies.
4. Cost of raw materials are down to normalised level.
5. USD up, RM down will increase margin and profits.
6. Current PE is too low due to sentiment. Likely to trend back to above 15 times with re rating on the card due to above factors.
7. Funds and Institutions likely rotate back to healthcare from other expensive sectors. Dow correction coming?
8. Above scenarios happened before.. can repeat again.

Malaysian glove manufacturer Supermax Corp (SUPM.KL) has introduced a new foreign worker management policy and enhanced its current human resources policies in light of allegations of forced labour, it said on Monday.
Supermax said in a statement it is currently in the process of updating the CBP about improvements made under the new policies.
"The effectiveness and implementation of these policies will be inspected by different levels of on-going audits with at least two auditing processes, and two additional U.S.-based auditors, which will conduct analysis and monitoring against the ILO 11 Forced Labour Indicators," it said, referring to the International Labour Organization (ILO) standards.
Supermax has also begun reimbursing recruitment fees to former workers since September and expects to complete this process by March.
The company said improvements to working and living conditions are in progress with refurbishment and renovation expected to be completed by mid-February.
It has also adopted an equal pay and benefit structure for foreign workers, to match that of local workers. This will further eliminate any discriminatory practice, it said.
Supermax said it has proactively raised its minimum wage to 1,400 ringgit ($335.73) per month, higher than the current national minimum wage of 1,200 ringgit...

Expect more worrisome Covid-19 variants after Omicron: scientists
Experts say there’s no guarantee future variants will cause milder illness or that existing vaccines will work against them.
With both Omicron and Delta circulating, people may get double infections that could spawn ‘Frankenvariants’ hybrids
16 Jan, 2022
Scientists warn that Omicron’s whirlwind advance practically ensures it will not be the last version of the coronavirus to worry the world.
Every infection provides a chance for the virus to mutate, and Omicron has an edge over its predecessors: It spreads much faster despite emerging on a planet with a stronger patchwork of immunity from vaccines and prior illness.
That means more people in whom the virus can further evolve. Experts do not know what the next variants will look like or how they might shape the pandemic, but they say there’s no guarantee the sequels of Omicron will cause milder illness or that existing vaccines will work against them.
They urge wider vaccination now, while today’s shots still work.
Scientists call for more virus surveillance to detect new variants sooner
The faster Omicron spreads, the more opportunities there are for mutation, potentially leading to more variants, Leonardo Martinez, an infectious disease epidemiologist at Boston University, said..

New Covid-19 infections continue to rise across the US. Here's where things stand
CNN 13Jan - Covid-19 has killed more than 840,000 people in the United States since January 2020. The US is now averaging 1,777 new deaths each day, according to data by Johns Hopkins University. This is 49% higher than a week ago.
As of Thursday, the US is now averaging 786,064 new Covid-19 cases, according to JHU. The average daily case rate has more than doubled in the past two weeks.
There are about 151,261 people currently hospitalized with Covid-19, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services, breaking previous record highs for the second day in a row.
But those numbers fail to paint a complete picture, however, since testing scarcity and delays likely left many Covid-19 cases and deaths undiagnosed, especially during the outbreak's early stages.
In fact, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that as many as 1 in 3 people in the United States has been infected, more than three times the official count...

U.S. hospitalizations surpass last winter’s peak.
The number of Americans hospitalized with Covid-19 has surpassed last winter’s peak, underscoring the severity of the threat the virus continues to pose as the extremely contagious Omicron variant tears through the United States.
As of Sunday, 142,388 people with the virus were hospitalized nationwide, according to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, surpassing the peak of 142,315 reported on Jan. 14 of last year. The seven-day average of daily hospitalizations was 132,086, an increase of 83 percent from two weeks ago.
The Omicron wave has overwhelmed hospitals and depleted staffs that were already worn out by the Delta variant. It has been driven in large part by people younger than 60. Among people older than 60, daily admissions are still lower than last winter.
The hospitalization totals also include people who test positive for the virus incidentally after being admitted for conditions unrelated to Covid-19; there is no national data showing how many people are in that category.
As cases soared over the past few weeks to an average of over 737,000 per day, far higher than last winter’s peak, public health officials have argued that caseloads were of limited significance because Omicron is less virulent than Delta and other variants, and that vaccines, and especially boosters, offered protection against severe illness.
But the surge’s sheer volume has overwhelmed hospitals across the country. And outside cities like New York, where Omicron hit early and has pushed hospitals to the brink, it is unlikely to have peaked.
Current hospitalizations are one of the most reliable measures of the severity of the pandemic over time, because they are not influenced by testing availability or by spikes in minor cases.
Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the country’s top infectious diseases expert, told ABC News last week that it was “much more relevant to focus on the hospitalizations,” which lag behind cases.
About a quarter of U.S. hospitals are experiencing critical staffing shortages, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. Some states, like Oregon, have deployed the National Guard to help. Others, like Illinois and Massachusetts, are delaying elective surgeries — meaning surgeries that are scheduled, as opposed to an emergency, a category that can include procedures like a mastectomy for a cancer patient. In some cases, employees with asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic coronavirus infections have been working, potentially putting patients at risk.
After nearly two years, “even the most dedicated individuals are going to be tired and worn out, if not burned out and dealing with mental health issues as a consequence,” said Dr. Mahshid Abir, an emergency physician at the University of Michigan who is a researcher at the RAND Corporation.
Data in some of the first cities hit by Omicron also show deaths spiking sharply — not as fast as case rates, but fast enough to warn of more devastation to come.
Doctors, nurses and other medical personnel are also falling ill themselves, and while most are vaccinated and have not needed hospitalization, their illness still keeps them out of work. Now, hospitals overwhelmed by coronavirus patients are ill equipped to handle other emergencies like heart attacks, appendicitis and traumatic injuries.
“The demand is going up and the supply is going down, and that basically doesn’t paint a good picture for people and communities — not just for Covid, but for everything else,” Dr. Abir said.

The U.S. is now averaging more than 700,000 new coronavirus cases per day, a USA TODAY analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows.
The country reported about 4.91 million cases in the week ending Saturday. That's more cases in seven days than in April, May, June and July 2021 combined. At the latest pace, eight Americans are testing positive every second. Each of the last five days ranks in the top five of the entire pandemic for highest case counts.
"I would not be surprised at all if we go over a million cases per day," Dr. Anthony Fauci, the president's chief medical adviser, told News 4 New York in an interview Saturday.
For perspective, at one point in June the U.S. average daily caseload over a week was just above 11,000.
And while the prevalent omicron variant is milder on a per-case basis, fast-swelling numbers of new cases are burdening hospitals.
A federal report released Saturday shows about 138,000 COVID-19 patients in hospital beds, up 32% from the previous week.
But Fauci told the TV station the dismal numbers could start to decline by month's end.
"I can’t predict accurately, because no one can. But I would hope that by the time we get to the fourth week in January ... that we will start to see this coming down," Fauci said.
