Dr. Fauci on Potential for 'Monster' COVID Variant to Emerge

Dr. Fauci warned a "functionally different" COVID variant could emerge after he was asked about the potential for a "monster" form of the virus to develop.

On Tuesday, MSNBC Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski asked the chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden about the future of the pandemic and the potential for the situation to spiral "beyond Delta to monster variant."

The new Mu variant of the novel coronavirus is more than seven times more resistant to antibodies created by vaccinations than the original strain of the virus, a study by a Japanese research team has found.

Despite the increased resistance, “the Mu variant does not make vaccines ineffective, nor does it require new anti-virus measures at the individual level,” said Kei Sato, an associate professor of virology at the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Medical Science (IMS) and a member of the team.

“(But) we found that the variant is the most resistant to antibodies among the previously detected strains of the virus,” he added. “It’s crucial to identify what types of variants are spreading. That will require an expansion of capacity to conduct genome analyses, which can provide detailed genetic information of the virus.”

WHO monitoring new coronavirus variant named 'Mu'

GENEVA: The World Health Organization has said it is monitoring a new coronavirus variant known as Mu, which was first identified in Colombia in January.

Mu, known scientifically as B.1.621, has been classified as a "variant of interest", the global health body said Tuesday (Aug 31) in its weekly pandemic bulletin.

The WHO said the variant has mutations that indicate a risk of resistance to vaccines and stressed that further studies were needed to better understand it.

The WHO currently identifies four COVID-19 variants of concern, including Alpha, which is present in 193 countries, and Delta, present in 170 countries.

Five variants, including Mu, are to be monitored.

After being detected in Colombia, Mu has since been reported in other South American countries and in Europe.

England will suffer a WORSE Covid outbreak than Scotland following the return of children to schools, experts fear

England faces an even worse spike in Covid cases than Scotland when children return to schools, top scientists warned.

Infections have already spiralled to record highs north of the border, with the uptick blamed on the reopening of classrooms following the summer holidays.

And now there are fears England — which has higher background rates of Covid than Scotland did — could be hit even harder, with millions of schoolchildren set to go back later this week and next.

Teaching unions are furious social distancing restrictions such as mask-wearing have been dropped in England, which experts have branded a 'recipe for disaster' — but Scotland is keeping them until the end of September.

Britain's daily Covid hospital admissions breach 1,000 for first time since February as cases jump 4.4% in a week to 32,181 — but England's infections fall again and deaths are down by 71% because of the bank holiday lag

US Covid-19 hospitalisations at level not seen since winter peak

NEW YORK (NYTIMES) - The United States is averaging more than 100,000 hospitalised Covid-19 patients, higher than in any previous surge except last winter's, before most Americans were eligible to get vaccinated.

The influx of patients is straining hospitals and pushing healthcare workers to the brink as deaths have risen to an average of more than 1,000 a day for the first time since March.

Hospitalisations nationwide have increased by nearly 500 per cent in the past two months, particularly across Southern states, where intensive care unit (ICU) beds are filling up, a crisis fuelled by some of the country's lowest vaccination rates and widespread political opposition to public health measures like mask requirements.

A coronavirus variant first detected in South Africa 'could be more infectious' than other mutations and have the potential to 'evade vaccines', scientists have said.

The C.1.2 strain, which is linked to 'increased transmissibility', is more mutations away from the original virus seen in Wuhan, experts at South Africa's National Institute for Communicable Diseases and the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform said.

The virus was first identified by scientists in South Africa in May and has since been found in England, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland.

In their study scientists found the strain, which descends from the C.1 strain that was first spotted amid the first wave of the pandemic, has a mutation rate of about 41.8 mutations per year.

This rate is nearly double the current global mutation rate seen in any other Variant of Concern (VOC) so far.

New extremely mutated Covid-19 variant detected in South Africa — report

A new coronavirus variant, C.1.2, has been detected in South Africa and a number of other countries, with concerns that it could be more infectious and evade vaccines.

Citing a new preprint study by South Africa's National Institute for Communicable Diseases and the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform, the Jerusalem Post (JPost) yesterday reported that the study is awaiting peer review.

The report said scientists first detected C.1.2 in May 2021, finding that it was descended from C.1, which scientists found surprising as C.1 was last detected in January.

It said the new variant had "mutated substantially" compared to C.1 and is more mutations away from the original virus detected in Wuhan than any other variant of concern (VOC) or variant of interest (VOI) detected so far worldwide.

While first detected in South Africa, C.1.2 has since been found in England, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland.

JPost said scientists believe that the number of available sequences of C.1.2 may be an under-representation of the spread and frequency of the variant in South Africa and around the world.

It said the study found consistent increases in the number of C.1.2 genomes in South Africa on a monthly basis, rising from 0.2% of genomes sequenced in May to 1.6% in June and then to 2% in July, similar to the increases seen with the Beta and Delta variants there.

The report added that the study also found that the C.1.2 lineage had a mutation rate of about 41.8 mutations per year, which is nearly twice as fast as the current global mutation rate of other variants.

It explained that scientists stated that this short period of increased evolution was also seen with the Alpha, Beta and Gamma variants, suggesting that a single event, followed by a spike in cases, drove faster mutation rates.

More than half of the C.1.2 sequences have 14 mutations, but additional mutations have been noticed in some of the sequences, suggesting that evolution within the lineage is ongoing, according to the study.

Half of kids in a California classroom tested positive for Covid after unmasked and unvaccinated teacher came into school while symptomatic with the Indian 'Delta' variant, CDC report finds

A schoolteacher in Marin County, California, started feeling COVID-19 symptoms on May 19, but continued to work for two days before testing positive

The teacher - who was unvaccinated - read aloud unmasked to the class during this time despite requirements by the school to be masked indoors

Following the teacher's test result, 12 of 24 children in the class tested positive, including all five students who sat in the front row

In a nearby grade, six of 18 kids also were confirmed to be infected with COVID-19, as well as siblings and parents of pupils in the two grades

CDC authors say the findings show how infectious the Indian 'Delta' variant is and recommend that teachers be vaccinated to prevent outbreaks
