The emergency use of vaccine candidates has followed a rigorous review and approval procedure in China and is accordance with the WHO rules, and so far, all those who have received the vaccines under the emergency use plan have shown no severe adverse reactions, Zheng Zhongwei, an official from the National Health Commission in charge of technology development, told a press conference on Tuesday.
After approval of the emergency use in China, China also briefed the representative office of the World Health Organization on the matter to obtain their ratification and support, the official added.
In response to questions about whether the urgent use of vaccines is actually necessary or too risky, the official said the second wave of the pandemic around the world poses great challenges to China, and the emergency vaccination is necessary, which aims to protect those facing higher infection risks — including frontline medical workers, border control staff, those who work overseas and public services personnel. Those who went abroad received their vaccinations voluntarily in China in accordance with related rules.
Concerning vaccine candidates' possible adverse effects, some side effects are common and normal for a vaccine still under development, with mild adverse effects such as swelling of the vaccination spot and fever reported by some of the 60,000 people vaccinated, but no severe situations have been recorded, according to the conference.

China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm), one of several Chinese firms developing coronavirus vaccines, said it may have the capacity to produce more than 1 billion doses in 2021, Chairman Liu Jingzhen said on Tuesday.
About 60,000 people have received Chinese coronavirus vaccine candidates during Phase III clinical trials, with no serious side effects reported so far, Tian Baoguo, an official at China's Ministry of Science and Technology, said at the same government media briefing.
In addition, hundreds of thousands of people in China have been given experimental trial-stage vaccines as part of an emergency inoculation programme launched in July.

The Johnson & Johnson trial was put on hold October 12 due to a study participant's "unexplained illness," according to a company statement last week. Johnson & Johnson voluntarily stopped enrolling study participants while the illness is being reviewed by an independent monitoring board.
The company and the FDA declined to answer two questions from CNN: One, whether the study volunteer who became ill received the vaccine or the placebo, and two, if this is the first pause for the trial.
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine and the AstraZeneca vaccine both use an adenovirus as part of its Covid-19 vaccine. Adenoviruses cause the common cold and other illnesses, but the viruses are
genetically modified so they won't replicate and cause disease, according to the companies.
Johnson & Johnson uses a human adenovirus, and the vaccine from AstraZeneca and Oxford uses a chimpanzee adenovirus.
Volunteers in the trial run by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford developed "unexplained neurological symptoms including changed sensation and limb weakness," according to a participant information sheet from the university.
The AstraZeneca trial paused once in July and again in September because of illnesses. The September pause is still in effect in the United States.

"If we want to find a way forward in dealing with COVID-19 there are only two ways into it, one is to prevent by vaccination, the other is to cure by medication," he said.
China has said that the vaccine could be ready for use by the general public as early as NOVEMBER, he added."

"U.S. Stock Futures Rise on Stimulus Talks, China’s Growth
Over the weekend, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told the White House it had until Tuesday to reach a deal with Democrats. If the deadline passes without a deal, ongoing talks would be increasingly unlikely to produce sweeping relief legislation worth trillions of dollars within the next two weeks, her aide suggested. Mrs. Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin spoke Saturday night, but a number of differences remain.
Chinese officials said Monday that gross domestic product expanded by 4.9% in the third quarter from a year earlier, putting China’s economy back toward its pre-coronavirus trajectory half a year after the pandemic gutted its economy. Other economic indicators released Monday offered additional signs of strength: China’s headline unemployment figure, the urban surveyed jobless rate, fell to 5.4% in September. "

"Covid-19 vaccine on trial in UAE found safe in early stages: Study
The Phase I and II of BBIBP-CorV vaccine for Covid-19 is found to be safe and produce an immune response, according to the latest study published in THE LANCET Infectious Diseases journal.
The vaccine candidate is developed by China National Biotec Group (CNBG) and the Beijing Institute of Biological Products. The study based on Phase I and II is done by the researchers at the CNBG subsidiary, Chinese disease control authorities and other research institutes.
The study pointed out that the results of the Phase III trial of BBIBP-CorV vaccine currently underway in Abu Dhabi will provide information on whether this vaccine is safe and efficacious against SARS-CoV-2 infection, and for how long the protective effect is maintained. The human trial underway in the UAE is through a partnership between SINOPHARM's CNBG and Abu Dhabi-based Group 42 (G42) under the supervision of the Department of Health of Abu Dhabi.

"Sputnik V vs. Sinopharm’s Vaccines? Egypt Purportedly Opting for Sinopharm
The Egyptian government also has secured 30 million doses of AZD1222 from AstraZeneca. But for access to the technology to produce a COVID-19 vaccine for internal use and export, it would appear China’s Sinopharm is well-positioned.
Although without outright declaring so, Egypt places its bet on the Chinese vaccines as more ready for primetime over the Russian one that happens to be approved (in Russia). Hossam Hosni, who leads a COVID-19 scientific committee, mentioned to Al-Monitor over a telephone call that Egypt will work with China commenting, “Egypt has verified the safety and prevention measures of the two [Chinese] vaccines it announced clinical trials for. “
This is one of the reasons why Egypt prefers the Chinese vaccine, not to mention the fact that its production stages are subject to supervision and evaluation by the World Health Organization (WHO). But perhaps as well as is described below, the UAE has issued an emergency use authorization for the Sinopharm inactivated COVID-19 vaccine."

"After Jiaxing city in East China's Zhejiang Province announced on Thursday to gradually roll out COVID-19 vaccines for emergency use, covering ordinary people who voluntarily take the injections, more cities in the province began advancing the COVID-19 vaccination for urgent use, as the onset of the autumn-winter season raises the risks of respiratory diseases.
However, approving the COVID-19 vaccination for emergency use does not mean China is allowing the general public access to vaccine injections, as some Western media like the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal have reported, which also suggested that China is giving unproven vaccines on a large scale to ordinary people or students who go abroad to boost confidence in homegrown inoculations. Such interpretation of the latest policies on COVID-19 vaccines contradicts the reality and smears China's anti-epidemic efforts.
Compared to vaccines developed in the US and the UK, some experts noted that CHINA INDEED HAS HIGHER LEVEL OF SAFETY, especially after the trial of the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and University of Oxford was put on hold in September and Johnson & Johnson also suspended its trial recently because a volunteer fell ill.
Zheng Zhongwei, an official from the National Health Commission who is in charge of technology development, told a forum in July that China has confidence in vaccine safety and in its effectiveness.
Following full demonstration and under the premise of compliance with the law, China officially launched the emergency use of COVID-19 vaccines on July 22 in a scientific and safe manner with informed as well as voluntary consent.
"No one who took the injection and worked in areas with severe outbreaks got infected, which also shows the vaccination was effective to some extent," Zheng was quoted as saying in media reports. "

"The most concerning of those are the unexplained illnesses that occurred with participants in AstraZeneca's late-stage study of AZD1222 in the U.K. and J&J's late-stage study of JNJ-78436735. Although the U.S. trial of AZD1222 remains paused, regulators in other countries, including the U.K., Japan, and South Africa, have allowed AstraZeneca to resume late-stage studies. There aren't enough details available yet related to J&J's clinical trial pause to know how long it might last.
All of the other side effects reported for these coronavirus vaccine candidates in earlier clinical trials resolved relatively quickly. This also appears to be the case in the late-stage studies. For example, CNBC recently interviewed some participants in phase 3 clinical trials evaluating Moderna's and Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine candidates. These participants reported experiencing side effects including "high fever, body aches, bad headaches, and exhaustion." However, all of them said those issues went away after no more than a day."
