The company manufactures Coastal vessels for sale and rental. A few years ago, when the petroleum price was above USD 100 a barrel, its business was booming because many oil companies and sub-contractors wanted to buy or rent more vessels. In a situation like this, many more people wanted to explore new oil fields hoping to make more money.

But currently when the oil price is less than USD 50 per barrel and its business is badly affected. In fact, many sub-contractors or service providers are forced to sell off their vessels.

You Must Know The Company’s Business:

To be a successful investor, you must not only look at the price chart and financial statements to buy or sell blindly. That is why pure chartists cannot make much money. It is very important to know the company’s business. Sometimes its current financial statements may not look so attractive, its business might have a fantastic future.

A very good example is JAKS whose current quarterly profit is not so good. But it will eventually have 40% of the profit every year for 25 years from selling electricity to the Vietnamese Government. Moreover, JAKS does not need to borrow money to finance the construction of the RM 7.76 billion 1,200 MW coal fired power plant.

Why I am Writing This Article?

My purpose of writing this piece is because someone wanted me to explain why she should not buy Coastal Contract.

Among all the criteria for choosing shares, profit growth prospect is the most important and it is the most powerful catalyst to move share price. Never buy any share if the company has no good profit growth prospect.


The above table shows that its profit and revenue are less than last year. The revenue is about 30% of previous year. That means the business is very bad and the future can be worse.

I also wish to point out the following:

1 You should not be tempted to buy when you see that the share price is selling less than 50% of its NTA.

2 You should not be tempted to buy because it is so cheap after it has been falling in the last 3 years, as shown on the above chart.

3 Always be careful when someone recommends you to buy any share. You must examine his track record and his intention.

4 I used to be a substantial shareholder a few years ago. I have visited its shipyard in Sandakan, Sabah and I know all about the company. The company always has a few readymade vessels for sale or rent. During oil boom, many owners of oil fields and sub-contractors would just pay without hesitation.

Do you guys know Earnings Per Share Palette last quarter 95 sen ? Therefore PE = 0.5.
