Low oil price to push petrol below £1 a litre, says RAC
Petrol could soon sell for below £1 a litre thanks to the plummeting price of oil, motoring organisation the RAC has predicted.
If the prediction proves to be correct, it would mean the price of petrol was at its lowest level since May 2009.
Its forecast is based on the price of Brent crude, which on Tuesday fell below $59 a barrel for the first time since May 2009, continuing to drop.
The RAC said it expected petrol to be below £1 a litre early in 2015.
"Talk of prices going up like a rocket and falling like a feather could not be further from the truth as retailers have been quick to pass on savings at the forecourt," said RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams.
The RAC said its monitoring of fuel prices indicated the average price for a litre of petrol was currently 116.9p - nearly 14p a litre cheaper than at the start of the year.
And it said diesel was nearly 16p cheaper at 122.33p a litre now, compared to 138.24p in January.
The average supermarket price of fuel is 114.26p a litre for petrol and 120.18p for diesel, it added.

The recent slide in the value of the ringgit against the US and Singapore dollars will not adversely affect Malaysia's economy, says Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan. He said the economy would grow within expectations in 2015 and the ringgit would remain stable in the long term and could still appreciate against several major currencies like the yen and euro.
You believe this. Come on lah Yen is going up now but the Ringgit is dropping. Many are selling our bonds.

Ruble jumps on Russia rate hike, oil pressured
Oil prices continued to slide on Tuesday, while the ruble jumped against the dollar after Russia sharply hiked its benchmark interest rate to halt a collapse in its currency.
The dour mood kept equities down in Asia, with MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS down 0.1 percent in early trade.
The Russian central bank raised its key interest rate to 17 percent from 10.5 percent, in a move it said was aimed at curbing increased devaluation and inflationary risks.
Sales of oil and gas are Russia's chief source of export revenue, while tougher U.S. sanctions on Moscow, which were set out in a bill passed by U.S. Congress Friday, added to Russia's economic woes.
The ruble RUB=EBS weakened beyond 60 rubles per dollar, after rising above 67.00 at one point on Monday when oil prices fell sharply. The dollar was last up 13.2 percent against the rouble to trade at 65.9 rubles per dollar.
