The redevelopment of Terminal 2 at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, Selangor, is set to begin at the end of 2017, said Subang SkyPark Sdn Bhd executive director Tan Sri Ravindran Menon.

The redevelopment project will bring SkyPark Terminal's total capacity to 5 million passengers per year from 3 million passengers currently, he added.

"We are looking forward to expanding our airport. These developments will have a positive impact on Malaysia's domestic tourism scene, particularly in the sense of connectivity when it comes to domestic travel," Ravindran said in a statement today.

Terminal 2 has been vacant since November 2009 after Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) relocated its corporate headquarters to Sepang.

Subang SkyPark, the manager of the RM45 million SkyPark Terminal at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, had reportedly begun talks with MAHB to redevelop Terminal 2 as early as April 2011, but nothing came out of it. At the time, the cost of redeveloping Terminal 2 was touted to be some RM20 million.

"SkyPark Terminal looks forward to an increase in number of passengers with efforts taken to improve connectivity, cost, and convenience. This includes boosting rail and land connectivity for passengers to and from the airport," said Ravindran.

He noted that SkyPark Terminal recently surpassed the 5 million passenger count from 300,000 passengers in its first year of operations in 2008.

"We believe the efforts taken to improve connectivity will augur well towards increasing passenger count as it will become more convenient and cost effective for them to travel seamlessly from one point to another," he said.

SkyPark KTM Rail Link, an extension of the Subang Jaya line, is set to be completed by end-2017. It will see the Subang airport directly connected to Kuala Lumpur Sentral.

FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd and Malindo Airways Sdn Bhd currently fly out of SkyPark Terminal, operating turboprop aircraft like the ATR 72-500s. Oil prices dropped nearly 1 percent in early Asian trade on Friday, dragged down by ongoing concerns over a global glut in crude supply despite a bigger-than-expected draw in U.S. crude inventories.

Global benchmark Brent crude futures were down 39 cents, or 0.77 percent, at $50.25 a barrel at 0039 GMT.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures dropped 45 cents, or 0.93 percent, to $47.91 per barrel.

Official data showed crude inventories in the United States, the world's top oil consumer, fell sharply last week as refining and exports surged to record highs.

Crude stockpiles were down to 6.4 million barrels in the week to May 26, beating analyst expectations for a decrease of 2.5 million barrels.

Although a sharp fall of U.S. crude inventories could be seen as a supportive factor to oil prices, U.S. crude production rose to 9.35 million bpd last week, up nearly 500,000 bpd from a year ago.

Surging U.S. production has put a strain on OPEC members' efforts to curb production cuts in a bid to drain a global crude supply overhang and to prop up prices.

A week ago, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and some non-OPEC members met in Vienna to roll over the output cut deal to reduce 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) until the end of next March.

Faced with lingering glut woes, the oil cartel discussed last week reducing output by a further 1 to 1.5 percent, and could revisit the proposal should inventories remain high, according to sources.

Rising output from Nigeria and Libya is further undercutting the oil producers' attempt to limit oil production. Nigeria and Libya are exempted from curbing output as they seek to restore supplies hurt by internal conflicts.

Libya's oil production has risen to 827,000 bpd after technical problems were resolved at the Sharara field. That was above a three-year peak of 800,000 bpd reached earlier in May.

Some commodity markets were also absorbing news that President Donald Trump said he would withdraw the United States from the landmark 2015 global agreement to fight climate change, a move that fulfilled a major campaign pledge but drew condemnation from U.S. allies and business leaders.

But Jonathan Barratt, chief investment officer at Sydney’s Ayers Alliance, said the U.S. decision to walk away from the climate agreement was not likely to impact oil markets.

“I see the little connection between oil markets and the Paris accord," Barratt said.

Global air freight markets showed that demand, measured in freight tonne kilometers (FTKs), rose 8.5% in April 2017 compared to the year-earlier period, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

In a statement yesterday, IATA said while this was down from the 13.4% year-on-year growth recorded in March 2017, it is well above the average annual growth rate of 3.5% over the past five years.

It said growth in freight capacity, measured in available freight tonne kilometers (AFTKs), slowed to 3.9% in April 2017.
