SINGAPORE, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Singapore Airlines Ltd reported a slightly weaker-than-expected 6 percent rise in third quarter net profit as earnings from the sale of aircraft and spares offset losses and it warned of tough conditions ahead.
"The outlook for international air travel demand continues to be challenging and the cargo market remains depressed amid the troubled European economy and the weak recovery in the United States," the Singapore flag carrier said in a statement.
SIA, Asia's second largest airline by market capitalisation, also said loads and yields for both its passenger and cargo businesses are expected to remain under pressure with the price of jet fuel near its historical high.
"The depreciation of revenue-generating currencies against the Singapore dollar poses yet another challenge," it added.

Indian airport regulator AERA (Airports Economic Regulatory Authority) approved a 154% increase in aeronautical charges for airlines operating to the city’s airport.
The new charges went into effect Feb. 1. For the first time, AERA has also allowed a user development fee, to be charged to passengers flying out of the city. The new charges are to partly compensate for the huge investments being made in redeveloping the airport.
Airlines have been complaining about the high operating costs at Indian airports. Low cost carrier AirAsia has scaled back an ambitious expansion plan in India, citing the high airport charges.

AirAsia Bhd group chief executive officer Tony Fernandes said he would, ideally, like to offer a larger portion, or 33 per cent, of long-haul low-fare airline AirAsia X shares to the public when it eventually lists.
For AirAsia X's flotation, it would be listing about 30 per cent of its shares. So a 33 per cent allocation for the public portion would effectively translate into 10 per cent of the entire paid-up capital.
Hahahahahah..... what a joke! Could it be a lukewarm response from foreign & local funds? Heheheheheheh!! Time will tell!!
Typically, where initial public offerings are concerned, investment bankers favour foreign investors and local institutions over the retail investor.
The rationale? The presence of cornerstone investors can better ensure the success of the IPO. Cornerstone investors are longer term in nature and will likely not sell for an extended period of time.

Mr Tassapon (Thailand AirAsia - TAA) noted the increased capacity will allow it to blanket the domestic skies with more frequencies, especially on trunk routes like those to Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi. The capacity bump also allows TAA to put greater focus on Indochina and Myanmar, the emerging markets.
But he conceded Cambodia and Laos are not yet ready to open their doors for flights to Vientiane and Seam Reap.
TAA also wants to start serving Bagan and Nay Pyi Taw from Bangkok, in addition to its Yangon and Mandalay routes, but the lack of proper ground handling services at those airports is an obstacle, he added.
The airline plans to commence service from Bangkok to Kunming in mid-year, while "a couple" of other Chinese cities are expected to be added this year.
Meanwhile, TAA has decided to suspend its Chiang Mai base, one of three Thai hubs, on March 1 this year as it looks to consolidate at its Bangkok hub, Don Mueang Airport.

Leading budget carrier Cebu Air Inc. is blocking the move of AirAsia Inc. to add more flights from Clark International Airpirt to Hong Kong.
AirAsia has filed a petition before the Civil Aeronautics Board for an extra-bilateral grant of 1,260 weekly seats entitlement on the Clark-Hong Kong, and Hong Kong- Clark routes.
The move would allow AirAsia to mount twice daily Clark-Hong Kong flights starting this summer.
Cebu Pacific vice president for marketing and distribution Candice Iyog said there is no need for additional seat entitlements on the Clark-Hong Kong route since there are still unused entitlements that can be re-allocated.

Flight operator PT Indonesia AirAsia has to concede a defeat against Hastrarjo Boedi Wibowo, its passenger, after the Supreme Court rule out the airline's cassation.
With the verdict, ruled on November 22th 2012, Air Asia is obliged to pay Rp50 million as immaterial compensation and Rp806 thousand for the flight schedule cancellation on December 13th, 2008. The compensation was in accordance to the lower court verdict.
The case started after Boedi, lecturer at Bina Nusantara University, filed a lawsuit to the Tangerang District Court. Boedi claimed that Air Asia has committed act against the law with unilaterally cancelling the flight schedule from Jakarta to Yogyakarta.
After the cancellation, Air Asia yet to refund the ticket and prompted Booedi to take a legal action against the company. Air Asia, in the defense argument, claimed that the cancellation was taken for the passengers’ safety due to technical problem.
The company argued that the plane was available for the day after the previous schedule. District court judges, however, considered the company cannot prove the supporting evidence to show that Boedi’s plane was the one that got technical problem.
The judges, therefore, declared Air Asia guilty of committing act against the law and ordering them to pay half of Boedi’s Rp100 million immaterial compensation demands.
