When there is turmoil in the world, the USD is the `safe haven'. I still cannot understand how one very experienced and senior forummer can equate it to `toilet paper'. It is so bizarre and absurd, especially from the mouth of a successful and knowledgeable businessman. He must be holding a grudge somewhere.

Supergeng, the price of gold has dropped back to USD1084 per ounce. Other than for a short spike, the Paris attack had no effect at all on the gold price. It would mean that the trend is still on the down side and may only hit bottom somewhere below USD1000 - which is still a long way to go. There is an interesting article by KCCCHONGNZ today on the topic of `hope' which begs to be read. However, unlike KNM and Hibiscus, there is hope in Bornoil, provided you have the time to wait. It is not price but time.

ktsk88, you're really gung ho on Bornoil! And I'm not in yet! I was in initially but because physical gold was moving down, I sold all before the rights exercise. Unlike other counters, the lower it goes the more attractive it becomes. Thus, for you and I, we hope that it will still go lower. No offence to those who are looking for the opposite. We just have to face reality and act accordingly.

ktsk88 thanks! Price depends on sentiment and holding power. We can never say where the price will be in a panic situation. Congrats to your Instacom, you're going to make a tidy profit. With your style in investing, I believe you're going to make much more in Bornoil.

myview, great job! As for The Edge Financial Daily, shame on them for `careless reporting'. Lets hope there is no sinister agenda behind it because many people would have read it and acted on it - and lost money.

Still a stock to watch. May be following the gold market trend. When gold start to move up - watch out! At the moment gold price has not bottomed out yet. 2016 may be a good year for Bornoil.

The fundamentals are there but most investors are only interested in making a quick buck. This creates alot of anxiety and fear when things don't go their way. Perhaps they're overly committed and cannot take a hit. To quote Bill Ackmen: Be afraid when everyone is afraid.

Calling Calvin: Time to get rid of your tissue paper currency and switch to RM.

If only life is that simple. Most times, we are so entrenched in our beliefs that we cannot accept views from other sources. The perfect example is the outburst from Calvin above on the USD. How then to have an open mind and share our views.

There are so many out there. Stick to one that you are comfortable with. I'm comfortable with mine. Lets not start another argument on `gurus'.

Frankly, with the full conversion of the ICULS, I just cannot see why SAM (Temasek) would want to dilute their shares further. I for one will be mighty glad if they continue to pay good dividend.

Safety first, put your money in USD or debt free exporting companies with revenue mainly in USD.

Winwinyarazhi, you got it right. A business man will always try to use OPM (other peoples' money) to make money.

I'm just wondering, should our investment landscape change if we were to include sovereign debt crisis in the mix? Any suggestions?

Don't forget to thank CM Lim ( on behalf of Penang Govt.) for donating valuable land fronting USM. He could very well have provided land miles away.

Good write-up. Some forcasters have warned of a looming global sovereign debt crisis. Can you comment on what preparations we should take to protect our personal wealth?

I was advised not to touch commodity shares. The global export growth is falling, as such the demand for commodities will also fall. Manufacturing companies will also be affected.

I for one, if I `know' that the market will fall by 50%, will be very worried indeed, irrespective of my age. If I cannot financially afford a hit, my pain may be more than that of WB's. One way to avoid the 50% haircut is to sell all and wait at the sidelines. Another, is to reinvest in some other vehicle that generates positive income. As they say, time is money. Worst come to the worst, to keep my money intact until the storm blows over. Any ideas?

Good write-up. Speaking of WB and Munger, I don't think they want to see Hathaway being caught with another 50% drop as they may not be around this time to see its recovery. That goes for all very senior investors in Bursa Malaysia too. What is your advice in these circumstances?

Calvin, you suggested landed property as a hedge in bad times. But I still think that you are still confronted with the dilemma when is the right TIME to make the switch. Provided of course, if you have the MONEY to do so.
2015-08-14 14:56 | Report Abuse
Ks55, you have covered some of the major problems affecting the world. Currently, holding cash may be a better decision than shares. Price movement of shares is dependent on the herd's hysteria,(I'm one of them) and it moves to extremes, up or down. The trend now is down, how low no one knows, before there is any recovery. Also, no one knows when actual recovery will take place. The essence now is on TIME AND YOUR MONEY.

Calvin, the US Dollar is still the reserve currency in the world. That is the main attraction. Which currency will you prefer to hold when faced with a worldwide financial crisis?

KYY & Ks55, one sifu said that this current bear is not the ordinary bear of yester years. This bear is appearing for the first time and he himself is not sure how he is going to handle it. His advice: Everyone will be hurt in some way or another, so try to protect your wealth as much as you can.

Stock: [BORNOIL]: BORNEO OIL BHD

For Hap Seng, Bornoil investment is long term. They need funds to expend their mining operations and it has to come from the shareholders. I'm sure they'll not forget your commitment and will reward you generously in the future. The mining leases are only for a limited period, as such, they have to extract as much gold as possible before the leases are up. No, I don't work for them or act as their agent.
